Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach champ is dancing to Elvis or chilling to Nina Simone

I’ve always had the biggest crush on Elvis since I was a little kid. I used to get the Elvis limited edition anything for my birthday. I love that he was a rebel for his era, and the way he lived. I just thought he was so cool. When I was younger, we couldn’t listen to rap, because it had so many curse words in it, so we’d listen to the oldie station and my mom would quiz us on the music. Whether it was the Beach Boys, the Beatles, John Lennon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elvis. You’d get all those classics and then Elvis would come on and I’d get so stoked! When I was younger, my favorite was “Jailhouse Rock”and “Hound Dog,” and then when I got older, I loved “Blue Suede Shoes.” I love to dance to that song.

The album cover, showing the band crossing the street just outside the recording studio, will become one of the most imitated in recording history. The zebra crossing itself has become so popular with Beatle fans, it has its own webcam.  In their interviews for The Beatles Anthology, the surviving band members stated that, although none of them ever made the distinction of calling it the “last album”, they all felt at the time this would very likely be the final Beatles product and therefore agreed to set aside their differences and “go out on a high note”.

'Elvis: American Sound 1969' 5 CD Boxset from FTD.

Standing on stage at the spot where the performers stood, Hall played a soundtrack from Oct. 16, 1954 when the announcer introduced a young man from Mississippi named Elvis Presley. After telling the crowd that he was proud to be there, Presley launched into a song called “That’s Alright Momma.” And then, from there on that spot on the stage, the music world changed. Really.

Because the concert was being broadcast on radio, microphones had been set up throughout the audience section. As Presley began to sing, the sound technician quickly noticed that something different was happening. Teenagers, who had been dragged along by their parents to hear a country music show, suddenly seemed possessed. Turning the sound pods the technician blended the screaming, unlike anything ever heard, into the song. Through the woods and hills of north central Louisiana and into Arkansas and east Texas the airwaves were raucous, as though sending a message that a king was born.

Elvis Presley’s single “Clean Up Your Own Back Yard” hit #35 in the U.S. Written by Mac Davis and Billy Strange it was released as a 7″ single in 1969 with “The Fair Is Moving On” on the B-side, but not featured on any studio album. It reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #21 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was from the soundtrack of the film The Trouble with Girls, and was later included on the budget RCA Camden album Almost In Love.

Although The Trouble with Girls is set in the 1920s, several lyrics within this song are anachronistic for the era, such as a reference to “armchair quarterbacks”, a term not coined until the advent of television sports broadcasting decades later.

New Musical Express prints Roger’s rebuttal to Pete’s remarks in his interview of May 31st. Roger doesn’t hold back: “I never read such a load of bullshit in all my life.” He also adds that Pete, “talked himself up his own ass.” To Pete’s charge that Roger thought rock ‘n roll was just “making records, pulling birds, getting pissed and having a good time,” Roger counters that the last few bad gigs The Who had done was because Pete, John and Keith had been “…out boozing and balling all night and by the time it got to the show at night they were physically incapable of doing a good show.” The interview later appears in Creem magazine in the US.

The Allman Brothers Band played at the Drive-In Theater in Collinsville, Virginia. About 200 fans were in attendance on a rainy night.

The Bee Gees had the first of several Disco style hits in the US when “Jive Talkin” topped the Billboard Hot 100. The inspiration for the song came to Barry Gibb as his car passed over a Florida bridge on the way to a recording studio. His wife said “Hey, listen to that noise. It’s the same every evening. It’s our drive talking.” The record made it to #5 in the UK.

Janis Ian’s biting “At Seventeen” was #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

The Bee Gees scored their first #1 song in four years with “Jive Talkin'”, hopping over 10 cc’s “I’m Not In Love”, which had to settle for being a #2 song for three weeks.  Olivia Newton-John was beginning to cross over on a regular basis as “Please Mr. Please” was #3.  The previous #1 from the Eagles (“One Of These Nights”) was at #4 followed by Elton John’s classic “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Midnight Blue” by Melissa Manchester followed by four new entries, “Rhinestone Cowboy” by Glen Campbell which moved 14-7, War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”, James Taylor jumped up from 15 to 9 with his remake of the Marvin Gaye hit “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and Mike Post at #10 with “The Rockford Files”.

one reporter, Mac Reynolds of the Vancouver Sun, said of Elvis’ show in the August 31, 1957 edition: “It is a frightening thing for a man to watch his women debase themselves… [girls who] screamed, and quivered, and shut their eyes and reached out their hands to him as for salvation…

“What’s happening that makes these girls scream, faint, pay lavish devotion for these musicians?”

For Mr Rowe, evidently it was not just the fandom that frustrated him, but his perception of Elvis’ lack of talent.

Paul V Coates, for the Los Angeles Mirror, went even further to say he would “smack that sneer off his face” if he was to get close to The King himself.

He wrote on October 31, 1957, days after an Elvis performance: “Let me admit at the outset that I don’t like Elvis Presley.

Given that Alfred Wertheimer was photographing Elvis- it is strange that there are no photos of this meeting.

Tiny Tim‘s “Tiptoe Through the Tulips With Me” peaks at number 17 in the US. The original version of the song, recorded by Nick Lucas in 1929, held the #1 position for 10 weeks. He did not make his first recordings until 1959 when he was 55 years old, but he became one of the best known of all country blues singers during the 1960s. Singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt was responsible for bringing McDowell to the attention of rock fans, including him on her tours and recording his songs. McDowell’s best known composition is “You Got to Move,” recorded by “The Rolling Stones” on their “Sticky Fingers” album. McDowell’s own LP, “I Do Not Play No Rock and Roll,” was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1970. He coached Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar technique.

He has also been a Las Vegas headliner for many years.

61-year-old Perry Como, the crooner who scored a string of hits in the 1950s, makes an unlikely return to the US record charts when his recording of Don McLean’s “And I Love You So” cracks the Top 30. The guitar you hear in the background was played by Chet Atkins.

The Bee Gees knocked Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” out of the #1 spot on the adult chart with “How Deep Is Your Love”.

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac held on to #1 on the album chart for a then-record 29 weeks, at the time 11 more weeks than any other album in Rock Era history.

Debby Boone remained atop the chart for the seventh consecutive week with the beautiful “You Light Up My Life”.  The best that Crystal Gayle could do was #2 with “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”.  The Bee Gees were closing with “How Deep Is Your Love” while Heatwave slipped with “Boogie Nights”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Chicago and their 24th hit–“Baby, What A Big Surprise”, Paul Nicholas was elated with the progress of his “Heaven On The 7th Floor”, Rita Coolidge had song #7–“We’re All Alone”, Linda Ronstadt moved up with “Blue Bayou”, Barry White’s big hit “It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me” was next and Linda Ronstadt became one of a handful of artists to have two Top 10 singles at the same time, as she moved from 16-10 with “It’s So Easy”.

“All Night Long” by Lionel Richie was a multi-format smash.  For the sixth week, Richie ruled the R&B chart.

Lionel Richie was becoming a fixture on the Adult Contemporary chart.  Since his duet with Diana Ross (“Endless Love” in 1981), Richie had now spent 20 weeks at #1 on the AC survey, 13 in 1983 alone, as “All Night Long (All Night)” continued to reign for the third week.

Lionel Richie remained at #1 for a third week with “All Night Long”.  Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson stayed at 2 with “Say Say Say”, and Billy Joel (“Uptown Girl”), Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton (“Islands In The Stream”) and Quiet Riot’s “Cum On Feel The Noize” were stuck in a logjam.  The rest of the Top 10:  Pat Benatar and “Love Is A Battlefield” at #6, Hall & Oates were up with “Say It Isn’t So”, Huey Lewis & the News cracked the Top 10 with “Heart And Soul”, John Cougar Mellencamp moved from 14-9 with “Crumblin’ Down” and Michael Jackson had his fifth straight Top 10 from Thriller–“P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”.

David Gilmour and Nick Mason both attended the launch of the spacecraft.
George Michael reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart with “Kissing A Fool”.
The Soundtrack to “Rattle and Hum” by U2 was still #1 on the Album chart with Anita Baker’s Giving You the Best That I Got moving up to challenge.  Appetite for Destruction from Guns N’ Roses was still at 3 after 66 weeks while the new Bon Jovi album New Jersey took fourth.  The rest of the Top 10:  The “Cocktail” SoundtrackHysteria from Def Leppard at #6 after 67 weeks, Bobby Brown and Don’t Be CruelFaith from George Michael was still hanging around after 54 weeks, the great Silhouette album from Kenny G came in ninth and Any Love by Luther Vandross was #10.

Boyz II Men started their 14th and final week at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘I’ll Make Love To You’ giving them the longest run in chart history along with ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston.
The Eagles started a two-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Hell Freezes Over.’ The album name is in reference to a quote by Don Henley after the band’s breakup in 1980; he commented that the band would play together again “when Hell freezes over.”
It had been 14 years since the Eagles’ great album The Long Run and on this day, Hell Freezes Over debuted at #1.  That sent Nirvana dropping after just one week of release with MTV Unplugged in New York.  The album II from Boyz II Men was still third while another debut–No Quarter from Jimmy Page & Robert Plant was fourth.  Other albums of note–Smash from the Offspring was #6, Fields of Gold – The Best of Sting 1984-1994 debuted at #7, Big Ones from Aerosmith dropped to #8, the Best of Sade debuted at #9 and Wildflowers from Tom Petty dropped to #10.
Boyz II Men were at #1 for the 14th week with “I’ll Make Love To You”, tying Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for the longest-running #1 of the Rock Era at the time.  Do not make the same mistake others do that this necessarily means it is one of the top two or three songs of the Rock Era (even though it is a great song and is certainly ranked high).  You have to look at competition to analyze the achievement.  So let’s look at it:  Ini Kamoze was second with “Here Comes The Hotstepper”, Boyz II Men had another song lined up, as “On Bended Knee” moved from 14-3 and Real Mc Coy remained fourth with “Another Night”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Always” from Bon Jovi, Madonna’s “Secret” at #6, Sheryl Crow slipped with “All I Wanna’ Do”, Brandy dropped with “I Wanna’ Be Down”, Immature fell to #9 with “Never Lie” and Janet Jackson was down a notch with “You Want This/70’s Love Groove”.
1996

Elvis Presley performed “Love Me Tender” on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956, shortly before the single’s release and about a month before the movie, Love Me Tender (for which the reworded song was originally written) was released. On the following day, RCA received 1 million advance orders, making it a gold record before it was even released on November 21, 1956.

Love Me Tender” is a 1956 song recorded by Elvis Presley and published by Elvis Presley Music from the eponymous 20th Century Fox film. The words and music are credited to Ken Darby under the pseudonym “Vera Matson”, the name of his wife, and Elvis Presley. The RCA Victor recording by Elvis Presley was no. 1 on both the Billboard and Cashbox charts in 1956. The song was adapted from the tune of “Aura Lee“, a sentimental Civil War ballad. Elvis’ version was ranked #437 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song hit #1 on the Billboard charts the week ending November 3, 1956, remaining in the position for 5 weeks and reached no. 11 on the charts in the UK. “Love Me Tender” also reached number three for three weeks on the R&B chart. It was also an achievement as “Love Me Tender” succeeded another Presley single, “Hound Dog/Don’t Be Cruel” at #1.

This occurrence marked two important events in Billboard history. During this time, Elvis accomplished another record; the longest consecutive stay at number one by a single artist, sixteen weeks, though this was tied by Boyz II Men in 1994 and stood for eight years until being surpassed by R&B singer Usher in 2004 who spent 19 weeks at the top of the charts.

Brooklyn High School in suburban Cleveland, Ohio hosted a 1:30 p.m. rock ‘n’ roll concert that featured Bill Haley And His Comets, Pat Boone, LaVern Baker, Roy Hamilton, Johnnie Ray, the Four Lads and up-and-coming artist Elvis Presley. The concert was filmed for a documentary about Cleveland radio legend Bill Randle, “The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc Jockey.” But the film, which includes the first known footage of Elvis performing, has never been released.

At 8 p.m., the same artists performed at St. Michaels Hall in Cleveland. Randle later recalled that the climax of that show was when Elvis broke the strings on his guitar and then smashed the guitar on the floor. “It was mass hysteria. We needed police to get him out of the hall.”

1950s radio personality Bill Randle was in competition with other radio personalities like Alan Freed. (the DJ era ended with the payola scandal – Enter: Program Directors, Music Playlist Services, the end of local talent in regions to national to international monoculture)

Randle introduces Elvis on the Dorsey Brothers and compares Elvis to Johnny Ray (rockers vs crooners – gimme a break pfft eh), but he mentions that the first time HE met Elvis was making a movie short – a Day in the Life of a Disc Jockey aka The Pied Piper of Cleveland.

So. There are 2 potential sources to see Elvis Presley pwn Pat Boone’s stage – with Boone on the national  charts and Elvis only in the regional ones. In professional film stock – probably 16mm not 35.

  1. Bill Randle (estate) or someone else in the production of the short.
  2. Cleveland TV – it was apparently broadcast – which means, there might be the 1 inch tape run during controversial broadcast in cast of regulatory complaints – and either recorded over or archived.
