Dixie left for a vacation in Florida with her family.

Later that day after supper, Scotty Moore tried to reach Elvis by phone. Although Elvis was at the movies, his mother fetched him and when Elvis called back, Scotty explained that he has gotten Elvis name from Sam Philips and that he was wondering if Elvis would be interested in an audition.

On his way to Memphis after an appearance on “The Steve Allen Show,” Elvis Presley met Gene Vincent at Pennsylvania Station in New York and congratulated him on his success with “Be-Bop-A-Lula.”

Given that Alfred Wertheimer was photographing Elvis- it is strange that there are no photos of this meeting.

Actress Judy Tyler, (Jailhouse Rock, Bop Girl Goes Calypso) , who played Princess Summerfall Winterspring for several years in the early 1950s on TV’s “Howdy Doody” show and shortly after completeing Jailhouse Rock, died in a car accident at the age of 24.

In 1972, blues singer and guitarist Mississippi Fred McDowell died in Memphis, Tenn., of cancer at age 68. He did not make his first recordings until 1959 when he was 55 years old, but he became one of the best known of all country blues singers during the 1960s. Singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt was responsible for bringing McDowell to the attention of rock fans, including him on her tours and recording his songs. McDowell’s best known composition is “You Got to Move,” recorded by “The Rolling Stones” on their “Sticky Fingers” album. McDowell’s own LP, “I Do Not Play No Rock and Roll,” was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1970.
