There was a rehearsal of the entire Burbank show between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.

On the set Elvis sung a birthday song for the Colonel on the melody of “It Hurts Me”.

It Hurts Me
Parody lyrics by the ’68 special’s writer’s Chris Beard and Allan Blye

It hurts me
to see the budget climb up to the sky.
It hurts me
when Finkel gives me trouble.
When I see all my money go
just for one g***damned ol’ tv show,
it hurts me
the way that Finkel spends my dough.

The whole town is talkin’,
they’re callin’ me a fool
for listenin’ to binder’s same old lies.
Finkel calls me, says I’ve got no choice
then hangs up the phone in that damned Rolls Royce.
It hurts me
when my tears start to flow.

They promised me sure
if I would give in
that I would – that I would
never go wrong, but tell me the truth
is it too much to ask
for one lousy, tired ol’
Christmas song…?

Before the show, he was presented with a plaque commemorating the 2 billionth record to come out of RCA’s pressing plant. The last song the King ever performed publicly was “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Blogger Nina Notes: in 1987 At Graceland, I saw the plaque for a billion records sold. Elvis sales were always underreported and the estate has sued the record company several times for international sales. Between official and bootleg, Elvis Presley would be the best guess for most recorded, photos, audio and film/video than any other person last century.

Elvis Presley is playing host to the Holiday on Ice company today at his home. Buses were to leave the Hotel Claridge at 2:30, carrying the entire company to Graceland to spend the afternoon.

The singer visited the show again last night at Ellis Auditorium and spent most of the time backstage. He climbed up to the elevated bandstand where Conductor Ben Stabler let him wield his lighted baton for a moment over the 17-piece band. Later he hugged the matronly wardrobe women and told them they had all don ‘a great job’. Elvis was kept busy signing autographs and posing for pictures for members of the company.

He wore a white open-neck shirt and dark suit.

At the performance for negroes last night, which drew a capacity house, St. Jude Hospital received a check for $500 thru the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, a negro organization.

Remaining performances of the ice show will be tonight and tomorrow at 8:30.

Deaf Children Meet Elvis

Elvis Presley fans know no boundaries – recognize no handicaps. Saturday night Elvis made the world of four youngsters a brighter place when he left a houseful of guests to come and greet four youngsters, who are students at the Arkansas School for the Deaf.

Flecher Davis, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Davis of West Memphis; Shirley Varner, 13, foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Lopez of Memphis; Philis Roberson, 15, of Stuttgart, Ark., and Betty Penington, also 15, of Benton, Ark., drove out to Graceland to have a look at the home of Elvis.

‘The children had no idea of seeing Elvis’, said Mrs. Davis’, in fact, we warned them that they couldn’t. We drove the children out about 9 p.m.. And then we saw one of Elvis’ cousins, Wayne Presley, whom we met in West Memphis last summer. He recognized us and said he would go inside and explain the situation to Elvis’.

‘When Elvis’ uncle, Travis Smith, called us out of a line of some 30 cars and motioned us inside the gate you could have heard our children squealing and the other disappointed fans moaning a mile away.

‘Elvis is a warm hearted and thoughtful young man. He came bounding out of the front door of his home looking handsome in a dark suit and a white shirt. He kissed the girls on the cheeks and they stood like rag dolls vowing to never wash their faces again. He shook hands and thanked us for bringing the children to see him’.

Mrs. Davis says the children are deaf but not mute, and that some even have partial hearing. Contrary to popular notion, deaf children love music. They feel the vibrations and even dance in their stocking feet to feel the vibration of the music more keenly. Last year the Davis family donated a juke box and several albums.

The Military Service Disruption

February 3, 1959

Military Service in Germany

Feb 3 – March 1960: Goethestr.14 in Bad Nauheim, Germany

At about 1:00 a.m. CST, about four minutes after taking off from the Mason City, Iowa airport, the chartered airplane containing Buddy Holly (Peggy Sue, That’ll Be The Day), Ritchie Valens (Donna, La Bamba), and the “Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson (Chantilly Lace), crashed into an Iowa field, instantly killing all three and the pilot Roger Peterson. Headed for the next “Winter Dance Party” tour stop in Fargo, North Dakota, the plane had been chartered by Holly so that the band members could travel in heated comfort (their tour bus had a broken heater) and arrive early for the next show. The pilot, not informed of worsening weather conditions, decided to fly “on instruments,” meaning without visual confirmation of the horizon, which led to the crash. Their plane took off a little after 1 AM from Clear Lake, Iowa, when a cold North-East wind gave way to a blinding snow storm which drastically reduced visibility. Encased in a sea of snow with only white below, pilot Roger Peterson seemed to become disoriented and flew the plane into the ground. One wing hit the frozen earth and the small plane tumbled over and over, killing the three musicians and the plane’s young pilot. Richardson was 28, Holly was 22, and Valens was 17.

Don McLean later immortalized the tragedy in his classic song “American Pie,” calling this “the day the music died.”

The Military Service Disruption

Dion And The Belmonts perform their newest recording, “Teenager In Love”, on American Bandstand. The song will reach #5 in the US and #28 in the UK.
In a long letter, the Colonel suggested to Elvis that he should make home tape recordings, with only his voice and a piano. The Colonel even told RCA about this, but nothing came from this idea then. Elvis did tapes, he always had the latest gadgets usually from RCA as perks and bonuses.
by the 1980s, RCA, then BMG and Follow That Dream Collector label would release a number of Elvis Presley’s home tapes, becoming official releases. Col Parker was a visionary in some aspects, just short sighted; being focussed on how much he could make from managing Elvis – he did consider himself part of the act. Just not the part that actually mattered.  These Germany home tapes were released on the “Follow that Dream” Elvis Collector label.

At Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut studio in Nashville, Brenda Lee recorded “You Can Depend On Me.”

Jerry Butler posted a seventh week at the top of the R&B chart with “He Will Break Your Heart”.

Orchestra leader Bert Kaempfert knocked Elvis Presley out of the number one spot on the US charts after six weeks with a sleepy instrumental called “Wonderland By Night”. Later in the year, Kaempfert would hire The Beatles to back Tony Sheridan on their first commercial recording, “My Bonnie”.

Bert Kaempfert had a #1 song with “Wonderland By Night”, unseating Elvis Presley’s “Are You Lonesome To-night?” after six weeks.  “Exodus”, one of The Top 100 Instrumentals of the Rock Era* by Ferrante & Teicher, moved to #3 with “Last Date” from Floyd Cramer on the way down.  The rest of the Top 10:  The Shirelles with a song written by Stanley, Idaho’s Carole King–“Will You Love Me Tomorrow” that moved from 14-5, Bobby Vee’s “Rubber Ball” bounced into the Top 10, “Angel Baby” from Rosie & the Originals, Johnny Horton’s “North To Alaska” was at #8 after 17 weeks, “Corinna, Corinna” from Ray Peterson edged up and Johnny Burnette placed “You’re Sixteen” at #10.

The Beatles started a nine week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Beatles 65’, the group’s fourth No.1. Beatles ’65 includes eight of the fourteen songs from Beatles for Sale and also includes ‘I’ll Be Back’ from A Hard Day’s Night and the single ‘I Feel Fine’/’She’s a Woman’. The record jumped from #98 the week before, making the biggest gain in chart history to that point.

The UK music show Juke Box Jury, a program where four panelists review new Pop music, turns thumbs down on The Righteous Brothers‘ latest release, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”, calling it “a miss.” It will prove to be one of the most talked about miscalculations in the show’s history, as the tune would go on to top both the UK and US charts.

John Lennon made an appearance on the satirical television show Not Only…But Also in the U.K.

The Beatles saw “I Feel Fine” record a third week at #1, holding off “Come See About Me” from the Supremes.  Bobby Vinton held steady with “Mr. Lonely” while the Searchers edged up with “Love Potion Number Nine”.  Petula Clark had a hot new song with “Downtown”, moving from 12 to 5.  It had raced up from #87 to #41 to #12 to #5 in just four weeks.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Goin’ Out Of My Head” from Little Anthony & the Imperials, “Amen” by the Impressions, the Larks placed “The Jerk” at #8, the Righteous Brothers moved from 14-9 with “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, jumping over “The Wedding” from Julie Rogers.

Beatles ’65 moved from #98 to #1 this week on the Album chart, one of the only times in the history of the Rock Era in which one group owned three of the Top 10 albums.  The Beatles were also at #6 with the Soundtrack to “A Hard Day’s Night” and at #7 with The Beatles’ Story.

Elvis Presley released the single “Guitar Man,” featuring the song’s composer, Jerry Reed, on lead guitar. Reed’s recording of the song was number 53 on the country music charts in 1967. Elvis’ single spent one week at number one on the country chart.

Thirteen years later, “Guitar Man” was re-recorded in a new electric arrangement, with Presley’s original vocal left intact, and it was the last of his eleven number one country hits. The record also peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and was his last top-40 pop hit in the U.S.
January 9, 1969
The Beatles ruled the U.K. Album chart with the White Album.  The Rolling Stones were runners-up with Beggar’s Banquet while the Seekers were at 3 with Best of the Seekers.

Graceland, Elvis met with RCA producer, Felton Jarvis, in the den which would become known as Jungleroom to discuss going to Nashville to record what he hoped would put him back on top of the charts.

Marty Lacker was there, seething, as he listened. Elvis snapped at him, ‘What the hell’s the matter with you?’ and Lacker got the opening he needed to lay it on the line one last time: ‘ I just wish for once you’d try Chips Moman and his rhythm section, they’re great Elvis’. And Elvis said, ‘Well, maybe someday I will’. Colonel Parker had lost control, Lacker had won for Elvis.

Jazz diva Dinah Washington charted with “Harbor Lights,” reaching #10 R&B. The Platters would take it to #15 (#8 pop) in 1960, having carefully studied Washington’s version.

Elvis recorded it as his first Sun Session and Sam Phillips was not impressed, that would take 2 more songs.

Elvis’ recording would not be released until RCA’s The Legendary Performer and various Sun Collections; and might explain why Elvis thought of himself as a sort of jazz singer much to 1950s jazz musician horror. Elvis blended from everything, he was a musical sponge.

Elvis sung Don’t Be Cruel and performed the only sacred song ever done on the Sullivan show: Peace In The Valley for the Hungarian Revolution or maybe his mother.
Elvis was shot only from the waist up and at the conclusion of the show Elvis was thanked by Ed Sullivan by telling the audience: “this is a real decent, fine boy. We want to say that we’ve never had a pleasanter experience with a big name than we’ve had with you”. After the show Elvis took the midnight train back to Memphis.

Swan Records teamed Freddy Cannon with Danny And The Juniors on a song called “Twistin’ All Night Long”. Unfortunately for all concerned, the song will peak at #81 on this date and fall off the chart completely after just one week.

Elvis Presley had his third UK No.1 album with ‘Blue Hawaii’; it spent a total of 18 weeks at the top of the charts.

The Tokens once again had the #1 song as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” resided there for a third week.  Chubby Checker’s “The Twist”, after reaching #1 in 1960, gained new popularity and was now up to #2 again two years later. “Run To Him” from Bobby Vee slipped a bit, Joey Dee & the Starliters had “Peppermint Twist” and Elvis Presley moved up to #5 with yet another big hit–“Can’t Help Falling In Love”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” from Neil Sedaka, James Darren was down with “Goodbye Cruel World”, Leroy Van Dyke dropped with “Walk On By”, the Lettermen scored a Top 10 with “When I Fall In Love” and Ray Charles joined the group with “Unchain My Heart”.

Bromance: Joe Esposito

Meeting in the Military, Joe Esposito was one of the few northerners in Elvis’ inner circle.

9893e9281a0b80930b42dcbca9f77a49vcd_homemovies_esposito

Diamond Joe, as he became known, was  the main go-between Elvis and Col Parker, the longest term “foreman” of the Memphis Mafia and co-best man at Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding with Marty Lacker – the other notherner – but who had gone to high school with Elvis.

Esposito is the photographer and home movie source for most of the Elvis at home images, and he’s published more books than the other Memphis Mafia members.

armageddon 1
There was an Elvis conference in Cloverdale, partly organized by Red Robinson, famed DJ.
Joe Esposito and Jerry Schilling were guests and they did a panel.
They were the only 2 guys around Elvis that I ever wanted to meet and I was struck uncharacteristically quiet during the hour long Q&A.
There was not anything that I wanted to know that I hadn’t already read about.
But after the event and the audience trickled away, I did think of something.
Had recently read the Armageddon the Musical book by Robert Rankin and in that novel, Elvis was a religion in the future of post-apocolypic earth.
With people attending mass conferences, traveling to Graceland, statues of him all over the world – certainly ,Aliens coming here would think he’d been king of the world.
But when you get asked questions a lot and they sound the same, you tend to give the same answer.
So while I asked from an anthropological framework – Joe Espostio freaked out and began yelling at me that Elvis was not a deity, he was a man and he would be horrified at me.
I tried to explain about the book, but Joe was not listening and he screamed until his face was red and then purple and when his voice gave out, he waved over Jerry Schilling – who had been standing there, mouth opened in horror that Joe was screaming at a fan.
He came over and Joe sputtered
“She’s trying to make Elvis a religion.”
Jerry’s confusion cleared and he started yelling at me.
I remember thinking when Joe was yelling at me that the last time he was that freaked was probably when he tried to give the dead Elvis CPR.
Lips that had been on Elvis’ had been 6 inches away from mine.
Joe Esposito died November 23, 2016.
