21-year-old Gladys Love Smith marries 17-year-old Vernon Elvis Presley.

Perry Como signed his first RCA Victor contract, beginning a 44-year professional relationship with the label. Three days after signing, he cut his first record for the company, “Goodbye, Sue.” It peaked at #18 in the early autumn of 1943 and marked his first appearance on the record charts.

After a month of booking gigs in larger venues in Dallas and Houston, Colonel Tom Parker arranged a meeting with Elvis Presley’s manager, Bob Neal, resulting in an agreement that saw the Colonel handle Presley’s gigs and career strategy from now on.

After long negotiations between Elvis and Priscilla’s parents in which Elvis had convinced them to allow Priscilla to fly to Los Angeles, Priscilla finally arrived from Germany for a 2 week visit.

Working at Abbey Road studios in London The Beatles completed work on the new Paul McCartney song ‘Yesterday’ with the overdubbing of an additional vocal track by McCartney and a string quartet. They also recorded ‘Act Naturally’ for Ringo’s vocal contribution on the ‘Help!’ album and the song ‘Wait’, in four takes. ‘Wait’ will not be included on ‘Help!’, it was included on the following LP, Rubber Soul

In New York’s Central Park, Barbra Streisand sang for 135,000 fans at a free concert that was recorded and later released as a CBS-TV special and a soundtrack album called “A Happening In Central Park.”

Elvis reported to rehearsals at the NBC studios in Burbank, California, at 1.00 p.m. for a meeting with Billy Goldenberg, Steven Binder’s musical arranger. From 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. there was a dance rehearsal with Jaime Rogers. Lance LeGault was present also, and helped Elvis with his dance sequences. This schedule was repeated the next two days.

From Elvis in Memphis is released to favorable reviews. The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200, number two on the country charts and number one in the United Kingdom, and its single “In the Ghetto” reached number three on the BillboardHot 100. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1970. In later years, it garnered further favorable reviews, while it was ranked number 190 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The Rolling Stones album Exile On Main Street started a four-week run at the top of the US charts. The double album, regularly regarded as one of the band’s best, features Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Happy and Tumbling Dice.

Five people were arrested for burglarizing Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, DC. The men all worked for the re-election of President Richard Nixon.

Dolly Parton recorded ‘I Will Always Love You’ in RCA’s Studio “B” in Nashville. Written for her one-time partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner, (the two were splitting professionally at the time). Dolly Parton would not agree to the Col and Elvis Presley songwriter percent and recorded the song used in the Parton/Burt Reynold’s Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie. The song was later a world-wide hit for Whitney Houston from her movie The Bodyguard.

Elvis attended screenings at either the Memphian or the Crosstown almost every night of the month until he had to go on tour again on the twentieth.

Comedian Minnie Pearl, who entertained Grand Ole Opry audiences for more than 50 years, suffered a stroke that ended her performing career. She spent her remaining years in a Nashville nursing home and died of complications from another stroke in 1996.
