Variety’s Reviews of Elvis Presley Records in the Fifties

Elvis Presley: “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”-“My Baby left Me” (RCA Victor). The current phenom of the music biz, Elvis Presley probably could have a hit if his name were on a blank disk. This coupling is sure of a big ride even though the material is not up to the level of his “Heartbreak Hotel” smash. “I Want You” is a slow ballad with a strong beat and Presley belts it with his identifying vocalisthenics. Flip, in a traditional blues vein, also gets an energetic workout.

A report by 560 UK undertakers revealed that bereaved families preferred Pop songs to Hymns at funerals. “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler was the most requested song, along with Robbie Williams “Angels”, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind”. Among the most unusual songs played was Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”.

2007

Beatles fans feared the misuse of the Fab Four’s music had hit rock bottom following the decision to license ‘All You Need Is Love’ for use in a nappy advert. Procter & Gamble had purchased the rights to use the song from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which now owned Northern Songs, the Beatles’ catalogue. The ad featured a baby jumping on a teddy bear in a disposable nappy which offered ‘ultimate leak protection.’

2009

Plans for a free show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the legendary Woodstock music festival were cancelled by Michael Lang, one of the original promoters. Lang told Rolling Stone magazine that the reason for the cancellation was “Money. No sponsors.”

In Montgomery, Alabama, a white mob attacked the Freedom Riders, prompting the federal government to send in U.S. marshals.

Elvis Presley’s song “Flaming Star” hit #14 in the U.S. The song was from, “Elvis By Request,” an experimental four-track release Extended Play 45 sized single that played at the Long Play 33rpm speed; and  containing two  songs written for the motion picture Flaming Star (“Flaming Star” and “Summer Kisses Winter Tears”, the latter cut from the final print) and two of his earlier hits on the reverse side. Elvis by Request is the only Presley EP to play at 33⅓ rpm. All of his other EPs were 45 rpm

The “Flaming Star” song was originally recorded as “Black Star” and changed to “Flaming Star” – and the movie was turned down by Brando – with Elvis turning in a solid acting performance placing “Flaming Star” on the Movie Academy Top 100 Westerns for it’s dealing with social issues that sadly remain relevant in 2017.

Bob Dylan and The Band played at the ABC Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. Some members of the audience were unhappy with Dylan ‘going electric’, and attempted to overpower the band by playing their own harmonicas.

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who grew tired of waiting for John Entwistle and Keith Moon to arrive for their gig at the Ricky Tick Club in Windsor, England so they took to the stage with the bass player and drummer of the local band that opened the show. When Moon and Entwistle finally arrived in the middle of the set, a fight broke out, with Townshend hitting Moon on the head with his guitar. Moon and Entwistle quit the band, (and rejoined a week later).

The Beatles armed with a bunch of new songs after their visit to India, met at George Harrison’s home in Esher, Surrey. They taped 23 new songs on George’s 4-track recorder, many of which would end up on The Beatles’ next two albums, (The White Album) and Abbey Road. The demos include: ‘Cry Baby Cry’, Revolution’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, ‘Blackbird’ and ‘Child of Nature’ (a Lennon song that became ‘Jealous Guy’).

Chicago singer/bassist Peter Cetera attended a Cubs-Dodgers baseball game in Los Angeles, where four Marines who disapproved of his long hair beat him so badly that his jaw was broken and he lost four teeth. He spent five hours in surgery and two days in intensive care. The incident had an effect on Cetera’s career and, according to him, an impact on his singing style. “With my jaw wired together, I went on the road and I was actually singing through my clenched jaw, which, to this day, is still the way I sing.”

Led Zeppelin started three days of recording and mixing sessions at A&R Studios in New York City, which included the recording of ‘Heartbreaker’ and various other parts for new tracks for the group’s forthcoming second album. Ben Weisman (November 16, 1921 – May 20, 2007) was an American composer significant for having written more songs recorded by Elvis Presley (fifty seven) than any other songwriter in history. The Mad Professor as Weisman was nicknamed by Elvis, worked with the King from 1956 (“First in Line“) to 1971 (“Change of Habit“). Their early association (1957–62) produced many of the most powerful rockers and poignant ballads in Presley’s repertoire, including “Got a Lot o’ Livin’ to Do“, “Follow That Dream“, “Rock-A-Hula Baby“, “Crawfish“, “As Long As I Have You“, “Pocketful of Rainbows” and “Fame and Fortune“.

Elvis Presley Collections – The Major Sets

During Elvis Presley’s career began in the era of singles, extended singles with 4 songs and LP albums.

Before the Military disrupted his unprecedented consistent charting and unheard of chart domination, across the genres, but also singles, extended plays and LPs, Elvis had 2 LP collections of hit singles.

In the 1960s, he had 2 LP collections of hit songs, and, in the 1970s,

RCA released a volume 1 and 2 box sets with 4 LPs, Elvis’ Gold Worldwide Hits

We all got to hear which Elvis we had in common and some regional variations around the globe.

One of the sets even included an envelope with a 1 by 2 inch swatch of fabric from a part of Elvis’ clothes. A mix of personal garb, and movie costumes – and astonishing, Elvis included most of the 1968 Special clothes – which were luckily saved and not cut apart. But imagine, opening your box and finding a black leather patch.

and the greatest hits set was completed after his death with the final singles to the First Grieve wave re-chartings. The King was dead. Long live the king.

In the 1990s, The Elvis Presley catalog underwent a digital re-mastering. Elvis Presley got a rare “the artist treatment” with three decade themed Studio Masters.

The 1950s box set was the first release of Elvis’ first demo audition attempt for Sun Records – Elvis’ own disc, given to his high school pal, who had paid the fee and had the disc the whole time.

The 196os set included the studio masters with a selection of movie song, and spawned a sequel set.

The 1970s set was divided between studio and concert recordings.

Daily Elvis – January 8

Give us this day, January 8, our daily Elvis

My love for my son began even before he was born on January 8, 1935. At that time there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me. But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we were going to be parents. I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be able to take care of her and the baby. Elvis’ birth was long and difficult for my wife, and as her labor pains went on and on, I grew frantic.

My parents were at our house with us, along with two, women, one a midwife, who told us when it was time to call the doctor. After what seemed to me an eternity, a baby boy was born – – dead. I was desolate at the loss of our child. But then my father put his hand on I my wife’s stomach and announced, ‘Vernon, there’s another baby here?’ At the time Elvis was born, medicine hadn’t advanced far enough for a doctor to predict twins, so his arrival took us completely by surprise. Our little boys looked something alike, but I don’t think they were identical twins. Even though the elder one was dead, we named him Jesse for my father; the younger one we called Elvis, for me, since Elvis is my middle name. We chose the middle names of Garon for Jesse and Aron for Elvis because we knew a couple whose twin sons had those names.

Of course, Elvis and I both wondered, over the years, whether his life would have been drastically different had his brother lived. I’ve concluded that it wouldn’t have been, because I believe Elvis’ career and contribution to the world were fated from the first. For during his early life, certain things happened which convinced me that God had given my wife and me a very special child for whom He had some very special plans.

Gladys and I were so proud of Elvis and enjoyed him so much that we immediately wanted more children. But, for reasons no doctor could understand, we had none. While Elvis grew from infant to toddler to lively little boy, we consulted doctors about our failure to have another child. We prayed about it, too. There was no medical reason why my wife didn’t conceive again, but she didn’t.

306 Old Satillo Road, Elvis’ birthplace, is now 306 Elvis Presley Drive.

Born on this day, Elvis Aaron Presley, the King of rock ‘n’ roll. He had his first No.1 in 1956 with the US No.1 & UK No.2 single ‘Heartbreak Hotel’. His first UK No.1 single was in 1957, with ‘All Shook Up’. Presley went on to have over 100 US & UK Top 40 singles from 1956 – 2006. Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century, with estimated record sales of over a billion million units worldwide.

January 08, 1935

306 Old Saltillo Road, East Tupelo, Mississippi: the house that Vernon had built with the help of his father and brother, Gladys, attended by Dr. William R. Hunt, gave birth to twin boys. The first, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn at 4.00 a.m. and would be buried the nest day in an unmarked grave in the Priceville Cemetery, near Tupelo. The second, named Elvis Aron Presley, was born at 4.35 a.m.
Whether Vernon’s Father – Jessie D or JD Presley was there varies by family telling, the darkest version being that JD was so drunk that he was cooing and cuddling the stillborn until Vernon stopped him.

Elvis: A Legendary Performer Volume 2 is a compilation album featuring recordings by American singer and musician Elvis Presley. As with the first volume of the series, issued in 1974, the collection was a mixture of previously released and never-before-released recordings. In this volume, RCA Records released for the first time “Harbor Lights”, a ballad Presley recorded during his first session for Sun Records in July 1954. This marked the first time since the 1965 album Elvis for Everyone, in which the Sun recording “Tomorrow Night” was included, that RCA had released any “new” songs from the Sun Records archives. Other previously unreleased material included an alternate take of his 1956 hit “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”, several performances from the 1968 NBC TV special that had not been previously issued, the song “A Cane and a High Starched Collar” from the soundtrack of the 1960 film Flaming Star, and an alternate take of his 1960 recording “Such a Night”.
