Elvis Presley (with Scotty Moore and Bill Black),  made his Las Vegas debut, opening for the Freddie Martin Orchestra and comedian Shecky Greene at the New Frontier Hotel.
Although he had become a teen sensation by this time, Elvis was not the typical Vegas Strip entertainer of the period and the audience reception was cool-to-indifferent. The contract was torn up after one week of what was supposed to be a two-week engagement. The experience was not a total loss, however. While there, Presley witnessed Freddie Bell and the Bellboys doing a raucous version of Big Mama Thornton’s blues hit “Hound Dog,” and he soon worked that song into his live act.  Presley wouldn’t play Las Vegas again for almost 13 years.

1964

The Beatles were filmed running around Thornbury Playing Fields in Middlesex, England, for their first movie, “A Hard Day’s Night.” The footage was combined with an earlier sequence shot at London’s Gatwick Airport and became the famous “Can’t Buy Me Love” scene. John Lennon was attending a luncheon to honor manager Brian Epstein at the time and not present for the film shoot. A body double was used.

1965

The Rolling Stones began their third North American tour with a show at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montréal, their first live performance in Canada. Over the following three nights, they did concerts in Ottawa, Toronto, and London, Ontario.

1988

Roy Orbison celebrated his 52nd birthday at a Bruce Springsteen concert, during which the audience sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

Whitney Houston topped the pop charts with “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” while setting a record for most consecutive #1 singles. It was her seventh, beating out both the Bee Gees and the Beatles, who each had six in a row.

President John F. Kennedy opened the Seattle World’s Fair by telegraph key from his Easter vacation in Florida on April 21, 1962, using the same telegraph key that President Taft had used to open the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle in 1909. The key triggered a radio telescope in Maine, which picked up an impulse from a star 10,000 light years away. This impulse was directed towards the fairgrounds to start the festivities, which included the release of 2,000 balloons, the ringing of the Space Needle’s 538 bell Carillon, 10 Air Force F-102s flying overhead and aerial bombs bursting and raining down tiny flags.

By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Would vou believe that Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole owe part of their current success to Elvis Presley? These two brilliant Shakespearean – trained actors, winning world – wide acclaim for their performances in “Becker,” might not have had the opportunity to star in the picture were it not for Sir Swivel Hips. Don’t laugh. It’s not that Elvis refused either the role of King Henry n or Becket. No. Elvis helped finance “Becket” indirectly. Producer Hal Wallis, who has made Presley’s biggest hits, also produced “Becket.” And were it not from the revenue of Elvis’ movies there might not have been the wherewithal to film “Becket.” Says Wallis: “In order to do the artistic pictures it is necessary to make the commercially succeesful Presley pictures. But that doesn’t mean a Presley picture can’t have quality, too.” Wallis is that one producer !n a million who turns out movies for all audiences. He doesn’t fall Into the category of artistic souls.

The Number Ones: Elvis Presley’s “Good Luck Charm”

Elvis Presley hits abound in ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ stage musical …

Daily Highlight for 2018

Elvis Presley started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Good Luck Charm’, his fifth US No.1 of the 60s. Also an UK No.1 hit. “Good Luck Charm” was his 29th Top 10 and his 54th hit in seven years.

Good Luck Charm” was published by Gladys Music, Elvis Presley’s publishing company, that reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in the week ending April 21, 1962. It remained at the top of the list for two weeks. It reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in the week ending 24 May 1962 and stayed there for five weeks. It completed his second hat-trick of chart topping singles in the UK.

Rather than a link in his perpetual chart success, the record foreshadowed a down turn in Elvis’s recording career. Good Luck Charm would reach #1 on the charts, but Presley would have just one more chart-topper in his career, and that wouldn’t come until over seven years later.

In addition, many of the composers who had provided Elvis’s hit tunes would stop writing for him after 1962. For all its success, Good Luck Charm caused a crisis in Elvis’s recording career.

the B-side  “Anything That’s Part Of You” was #31 in the U.S.

Elvis Presley releases had a tendency both side of the single to chart.

He was not able to obtain a license to box in any state for more than three years.  On June 20, 1967, Ali was found guilty by a jury that deliberated just 21 minutes.
