43-year-old Kyu Sakamoto, the first Japanese artist to have a number one hit in the United States with “Sukiyaki” (June 1963), was killed when Japan Airlines flight 123 crashed into Mount Takamagahara during a flight from Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) to Osaka International Airport, Japan. Only four of the five hundred and twenty-four people onboard survived the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history. In the months after the crash, domestic air travel decreased by as much as 25%. To this day, Japan Airlines no longer uses flight number 123.

Four members of The Platters were arrested after a gig in Cincinnati after being found with four 19 year old women, (3 of them white), in various stages of undress. The scandal resulted in radio stations across the US removing Platters records from their playlists.

Five weeks after it entered the Billboard Hot 100, Elvis Presley’s “A Big Hunk Of Love” reached number one.

Johnny Kidd And The Pirates topped the UK chart with “Shakin’ All Over”. The song was ignored across the pond until recorded by The Guess Who, who took it to #22 in America and #1 in their home country of Canada in 1965.

16 year old Bryan Hyland‘s novelty tune, “Itsy Bitsy, Teenie Weenie, Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Best Sellers list. Songwriter Paul Vance said he got the inspiration for the song when he saw his two year old daughter at the beach in a tiny little swimsuit. The record reached #8 in the UK.

England’s Decca Records scrapped 25,000 copies of Ray Peterson’s “Tell Laura I Lover Her” because they felt the song, which recounts the last thoughts of a teenager dying from a car accident, was “too tasteless and vulgar.” A rival record company felt differently and recorded a cover version by a singer named Ricky Valance, which went to number one on the British chart. In the US, Peterson’s version reached number seven on the Billboard Pop chart.

Flaming Star  Elvis recorded four songs at Radio Recorders for Flaming Star between 8.00 p.m. and 4.00 a.m. Elvis was embarrassed by the material.

Elvis Presley released the single “(Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame” b/w “Little Sister.”

The relatively intense tune, featuring a Bo Diddley beat, performed well on both pop and easy listening stations, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart, based (at the time) on the Top 100. However, the single’s Hot 100 chart run was atypical of a Top Ten hit. In the autumn of 1961 it shot from 22 to 4, then dropped to 10, then 26, all within the space of four weeks. The single (a double A-side with “Little Sister“, as in the States) spent four weeks at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart[5] — one of Presley’s nine UK chart-toppers between 1960 and 1962.

“House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals is released in America. Although the band would put 14 songs in the Top 40, this will be their only US number one. It was reported that the song was recorded in just one take and the band was actually in the studio for less than ten minutes.

The soundtrack to the Elvis Presley movie “Kissin’ Cousins” hit #5 in the U.K.

Six shots were captured by photographer Iain Macmillan, and the session was completed in less than ten minutes. 2005

A report by 560 UK undertakers revealed that bereaved families preferred Pop songs to Hymns at funerals. “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler was the most requested song, along with Robbie Williams “Angels”, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind”. Among the most unusual songs played was Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”.

2007

Beatles fans feared the misuse of the Fab Four’s music had hit rock bottom following the decision to license ‘All You Need Is Love’ for use in a nappy advert. Procter & Gamble had purchased the rights to use the song from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which now owned Northern Songs, the Beatles’ catalogue. The ad featured a baby jumping on a teddy bear in a disposable nappy which offered ‘ultimate leak protection.’

2009

Plans for a free show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the legendary Woodstock music festival were cancelled by Michael Lang, one of the original promoters. Lang told Rolling Stone magazine that the reason for the cancellation was “Money. No sponsors.”
