The Nashville rendition of this song, done by Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes in July 1956 and released on the Decca label, failed to chart. This new version, recorded in February 1957 at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis, New Mexico went to #1. The song would reach #1 in the UK and #3 in the US and was later ranked at #39 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In 2005, the recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.” It was also the first song to be recorded by The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became The Beatles.

Virgin Records releases the anti-establishment anthem “God Save The Queen” by The Sex Pistols. UK sales will reach over 150,000 in the first five days, despite the fact that major retailers refuse to sell the record and the BBC bans it from air-play. Against all odds, the single still reached #2 on the UK singles chart. It sold 200,000 copies in one week and peaked at No.2 on the UK charts behind Rod Stewart’s ‘I Don’t Want to Talk About It’. There have been persistent rumours, (never confirmed or denied), that it was actually the biggest-selling single in the UK at the time, and the British Phonographic Industry conspired to keep it off the No.1 slot.

Elvis Presley: “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”-“My Baby left Me” (RCA Victor). The current phenom of the music biz, Elvis Presley probably could have a hit if his name were on a blank disk. This coupling is sure of a big ride even though the material is not up to the level of his “Heartbreak Hotel” smash. “I Want You” is a slow ballad with a strong beat and Presley belts it with his identifying vocalisthenics. Flip, in a traditional blues vein, also gets an energetic workout.
