Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach champ is dancing to Elvis or chilling to Nina Simone

I’ve always had the biggest crush on Elvis since I was a little kid. I used to get the Elvis limited edition anything for my birthday. I love that he was a rebel for his era, and the way he lived. I just thought he was so cool. When I was younger, we couldn’t listen to rap, because it had so many curse words in it, so we’d listen to the oldie station and my mom would quiz us on the music. Whether it was the Beach Boys, the Beatles, John Lennon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elvis. You’d get all those classics and then Elvis would come on and I’d get so stoked! When I was younger, my favorite was “Jailhouse Rock”and “Hound Dog,” and then when I got older, I loved “Blue Suede Shoes.” I love to dance to that song.

The Temptations release “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep.”

John Lennon’s comment that The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus Christ” was re-printed in an American teen magazine called Datebook and was widely reported in North America. The statement, made to London Evening Standard journalist Maureen Cleave several months earlier, caused a public outcry in the US and led to mass destruction of Beatle records. Thirty five radio stations banned all Beatles songs and even the Ku Klux Klan made threats against the group. What Lennon actually said was “Christianity will go. It will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that, I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus Christ now; I don’t know which will go first, rock ‘n roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.”

A ban on the broadcast of Beatles records in South Africa and on some U.S. radio stations went into effect in response to John Lennon saying the band was more popular than Jesus. The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s ban on Beatles records lasted for five years, until after the group had disbanded, but continued in subsequent years on John Lennon’s solo recordings.

The album which was recorded at Abbey Road studios, London during the same time that The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper peaked at No.6 on the UK album chart and failed to chart in the US.

Ed Hill Has Died: Ed Hill of The Stamps sadly passed away July 13, 2020. Edwin Lee Hill, son of a minister, was born in St. Louis, MO, and started singing at the early age of 15 with a group called “Humble Hearts” followed by The Prophets Quartet which would become regulars on the Gospel Singing Caravan TV series with the LeFevres, the Blue Ridge Quartet and the Johnson Sisters.
After Ed retired The Prophets, he enjoyed a lengthy tenure with Hovie Lister and The Statesmen. J.D. Sumner of the Stamps Quartet asked Ed to manage his talent agency and music companies, and in 1973 was asked to sing baritone temporarily until a permanent voice could be acquired. This “‘temporary” would become five years fulltime with the Stamps Quartet and with Elvis Presley.
In 1987, J.D. Sumner reorganized the Stamps Quartet from his existing Master’s V group, and J.D.
again asked Ed to become a member of his group. According to J.D., Ed was “one of the best quartet men I ever worked with.”
Ed, along with The Stamps were permanent members of the Elvis Presley Show until Elvis’ death in 1977.
Around 1974 Ed Hill took over Al Dvorin’s roll of announcing the end of every show.. “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and good night!” . . . it was none other than Ed Hill himself.

Elvis Presley releases “Clean Up Your Own Back Yard.”  The song was featured in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Trouble with Girls (and How to Get into It),  and was later included on the budget RCA Camden album Almost In Love. Although The Trouble with Girls is set in the 1920s, several lyrics within this song are anachronistic for the era, such as a reference to “armchair quarterbacks”, a term not coined until the advent of television sports broadcasting decades later.

Dolly Parton recorded ‘I Will Always Love You’ in RCA’s Studio “B” in Nashville. Written for her one-time partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner, (the two were splitting professionally at the time). Dolly Parton would not agree to the Col and Elvis Presley songwriter percent and recorded the song used in the Parton/Burt Reynold’s Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie. Whitney Houston would have a #1 with it as well.

The song was later a world-wide hit for Whitney Houston from her movie The Bodyguard.

Blondie released their debut single ‘X Offender’. Written by Gary Valentine and Debbie Harry, the title of the song was originally ‘Sex Offender’, written about an 18-year-old boy being arrested for having sex with his younger girlfriend. Debbie Harry changed the lyrics so that the song was about a prostitute being attracted to the police officer that had arrested her. Private Stock, the band’s label insisted that the single be changed to ‘X Offender’ because they were nervous about the original title.

“Time After Time” from newcomer Cyndi Lauper on the Adult Contemporary chart, reaching the #1 position.

RCA Victor introduces the 45 rpm single record, which had been in development since 1940. The 7 inch disc was designed to compete with the 33 1/3 LP introduced by Columbia a year earlier. Both formats offered better fidelity and longer playing time than the 78 rpm platter that was currently in use. Advertisements for new record players boasted that with 45 RPM records, the listener could hear up to ten records with speedy, silent, hardly noticeable changes.

The first 45 rpm released was “Texarkana Baby” by country & western singer Eddy Arnold. The disc was made of green vinyl, part of an early plan to color-code singles according to the genre of music they featured. Others included yellow for children’s songs and red for classical music.

Elvis Presley and Karate

Elvis Presley began studying it in the 1950s, above – battling with Red West in Graceland; incorporating karate into his 1960s movie fight scenes and his 1970s concert performances

Elvis certainly would have earned his early belts – but he really did lack the discipline as evidences by his manic retail therapy and general binging – of all his interests, Karate remained a passion over his lifetime.

Kang Rhee issued Elvis his upper black belt certifications and Elvis gave him a car.

In the 1970s, Elvis famously broke up a street fight and kicked a pack of cigarettes out of a guy’s shirt pocket.

Elvis designed his own patch.

Elvis had been dissatisfied with his acting movie career and for a while, decided to produce a movie about karate – featuring all his pals.

The movie was never completed – however was eventually leaked to the fan base.

Like everyone else, the karate crowd exploited their Elvis connection.

Ed Parker used Elvis to promote his events when Elvis was alive and Dave Hebler was part of The Bodyguard book.
