Presley Fans Keep Studio From Chopping Sideburns By ALINE MOSBY United Press Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UP) —

Elvis Presley was All Shook Up with gratitude today. Durned if fans didn’t keep MGM Studio from chopping off his famous sideburns and bangs. MGM figured on giving Elvis a crewcut and shaving off those side whiskers because he plays a convict in “Jailhouse Rock”, the third movie on the agenda of the Presley . steamroller through Hollywood. But this caused the biggest crisis in the movie business since Lassie was exposed as a she: Four thousand post cards and letters from Presley fans poured into MGM, begging that the studio let their hero act with his original hair hanging around his sensual- looking face. His Trademark A Fortville, Ind., mother wrote “We love him at our house. Elvis has had more criticism than anyone but his loyal fans stand by.”

Presley’s return

For the First Time in the three years since The Beatles rocketed to fame and fortune, the English hit parade has been topped by that figure out of the past, Elvis Presley. His “Crying in the Chapel” displaced Briton Sandie Shaw’s “long Live Love”, according to a recent weekly report, at the top of the pile.

The best The Beatles could do was take 24th place, with “Ticket to Ride”. The Beatles recent appearance on the queen’s birthday honors list, creating them members of the Order of the British Empire, cannot be expected to do much for their dwindled popularity. One teen-age girl, for example, said of The Beatles favor at the royal hand, “They’ve become respectable, and I don’t want anything to more to do with them.”

All along, of course, we knew that even The Beatles would have their day and be replaced. But we did not expect to see so ancient a figure as Elvis Presley rise to occupy the Beatles’ vacated throne – and in the Beatles home country! Isn’t anything certain any more, even the fickleness of addicts to popular records?

The final cut of Harum Scarum is screened for studio executives, and the Colonel, aghast, declares “It would take a fifty-fifth cousin to P.T. Barnum to sell this picture… The best thing to do is to book it fast, get the money, then try again.”
