ELVIS PRESLEY MAKES BILLBOARD HISTORY
On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley accomplished one of the greatest feats in music history. On December 29, 1956 the King had a remarkable 10 songs on the Billboard Top 100 Chart.  Songs such as “Hound Dog”, “Love me Tender”, and “Heartbreak Hotel” were among the Elvis hits that swarmed the Billboard charts at the end of 1956. What makes this feat even more incredible is that every single Elvis released between 1956-1958 reached #1 on the charts in the United States, thus monopolizing the top of the Billboard charts for the better part of two years. Including both the United States and UK, Elvis has had 36 #1 hits in total.

“You Are My Sunshine,: Ray Charles is #1 R&B song and #7 pop with “You Are My Sunshine.” Ironically, the R&B icon was putting cash in the pocket of a segregationist with every record sold, as the tune was written by former Louisiana governor Jimmie Davis.

The Crystals charted with “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” (#11 pop). Unfortunately, as with their previous hit, “He’s A Rebel,” it wasn’t the Crystals singing on the record but Darlene Love & the Blossoms, thanks to the decision-makimg shenanigans of producer Phil Spector.

“Telstar” by the Tornadoes was the #1 song, outdistancing Chubby Checker’s “Limbo Rock” and “Bobby’s Girl” by Marcie Blane.  “Go Away Little Girl” by Steve Lawrence was fourth with former #1 “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by the Four Seasons behind.  The rest of the Top 10:  Elvis Presley dropped with “Return To Sender”, Ray Charles moved up to #7 with “You Are My Sunshine”,Brook Benton and “Hotel Happiness”, “Little Esther” Phillips remained the same with “Release Me”, Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans were thrilled as “Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah” jumped from 16-9 and Brook Benton was at #10 with “Hotel Happiness”.

The album “Elvis’ Christmas Album” re-charted at #59 in the U.S.

Bob Dylan played at the Troubadour folk club in London.

The Weavers, who at one time were America’s most popular Folk group, give their farewell concert at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. The group had hits in the late ’40s and early ’50s with songs like “Goodnight Irene” and “On Top of Old Smokey”.

Johnny Tillotson‘s “Talk Back Trembling Lips” becomes the tenth of his fourteen Billboard Top 40 hits when it peaks at #7 during a ten week stay. He, along with many others, would soon be overwhelmed by teen audiences’ preference for English music that the press would dub “The British Invasion.”

John Lennon and Paul McCartney are called the greatest composers since Beethoven in an article in the London Sunday Times.

The Liverpool Youth Employment Service announced that some applicants were finding it difficult to get jobs because their Beatle style haircuts and clothing were unacceptable to employers.

The Sir Douglas Quintet are busted for marijuana possession in Corpus Christi, Texas. They get probation when they appear in court with short hair, wearing suits. “I’m glad you cut your hair,” the judge tells them. “I saw your pictures in the paper when you were arrested and I don’t go for that stuff.”

The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their debut on the UK TV show Top Of The Pops, performing “Hey Joe”.
Pink Floyd and Syn, featuring bassist Chris Squire, who would later became a member of Yes, appeared at The Marquee, Wardour Street, London, England. As well as Pink Floyd, a list of the biggest selling acts in the world who appeared at The Marquee would include AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Rolling Stones.
Gary Lewis, whose band Gary Lewis and the Playboys charted seven Top 10 hits the previous two years, enters the Army. He serves in Korea and Saigon but never sees action. Lewis is the son of Jerry Lewis, but never considered using his connections to dodge the draft. Said Gary: “I got my draft notice, and the first thing that popped into my mind was Elvis did it, I’m doing it. That’s all there is to it.”
Working at Abbey Road studios, London, Paul McCartney began work on his new song “Penny Lane,”recording six takes on the paino, then added a second piano, put through a Vox amplifier with vibrato and reverb to create various percussion effects. Penny Lane is a neighborhood in the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, as well as a street, and a bus station through which Paul used to travel in order to get to John Lennon’s house.
Elvis bought a horse this day – it was a chestnut sorrel horse named Whirlaway.

Singer, guitarist and songwriter Dave Mason quits Traffic, one of the UK’s most popular and successful Rock bands, to embark on a solo career.

The first big Rock festival held on the east coast, The Miami Festival, gets under way in Hallandale, Florida. Tickets sell for six and seven dollars and 100,000 people turn out for the three day event. Those appearing include the hottest acts of the day, Jose Feliciano, Procol Harem, Three Dog Night, Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac, Marvin Gaye, The Turtles, Canned Heat and Joni Mitchell.

Jim Croce‘s “Time in a Bottle” tops the Hot 100, the second of three posthumous hits for the late singer / songwriter.
 Stevie Wonder rose to #1 on the R&B chart with his classic “Living For The City”.
Ringo Starr shot up from 50 to 27 with “You’re Sixteen”.
The recently departed Jim Croce reached #1 with “Time In A Bottle”.  Charlie Rich dropped from the top with “The Most Beautiful Girl” while Helen Reddy had another big hit with “Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)” and the Steve Miller Band was at 4 with “The Joker”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Elton John and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” after peaking at #2 for three weeks, Todd Rundgren with “Hello It’s Me”, the Carpenters were still at 7 after 13 weeks with their smash “Top Of The World”, Al Wilson’s great new song “Show and Tell”, Brownsville Station moved up with “Smokin’ In The Boy’s Room” and Barry White held on to the #10 spot with “Never, Never Gonna’ Give Ya Up”.
Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was on top for a third straight week on the Album chart.
Number one chart toppers pop hit: “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” Elton John. The John Lennon-Paul McCartney song first appeared on the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967.
Lynyrd Skynyrd played at the Barton Coliseum, Little Rock, Arkansas.
Elvis got a phone call from the Colonel. The Colonel wanted to hear about Elvis’ health problems of which he had heard some rumors. The Colonel made the decision that Elvis would not be able to fulfill is January commitment in Las Vegas.

Tim Hardin dies from a heroin overdose just six days after his 39th birthday. Although he wrote Rod Stewart’s hit “Reason to Believe” and “If I Were a Carpenter,” which was a hit for both Bobby Darin and the Four Tops, he had not recorded an album of his own since 1973.

Unexpectedly (and some say inexplicably) delving into electronic music, Neil Young releases his 12th studio album, Trans. This album, along with the one that follows it (Everybody’s Rockin’), causes Geffen Records to sue Young for intentionally creating music that won’t sell.

Band Aid were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with Do They Know It’s Christmas? and Madonna was at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Like A Virgin.’

1990

Elton John led the way on the Adult Contemporary chart for a third week with “You Gotta’ Love Someone”.

1992

B.B. King performed for 300 inmates at the Gainseville Drug Treatment Center in Gainseville, FL. Among the prisoners was his daughter Patty, incarcerated for three years for drug trafficking.

1994

Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes pleaded guilty to arson charges for setting fire to and destroying boyfriend Andre Rison’s $1 million Atlanta mansion.

1999

UK music paper The Melody Maker published it’s Music of the Millennium Poll of albums, placing The Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead at number one.

2000

A federal appeals court ruled that Nicholas Kussbaum, bassist for Steppenwolf, could continue to bill himself as a former member of the group.  John Kay, lead singer of the group, tried to enforce a 1980 contract in which Kussbaum agreed not to emphasize his ties with the group.

Beyond the Sea, a musical about the life of Bobby Darin, debuts in US theaters. Darin superfan Kevin Spacey – who co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film – does his own singing. 45-year-old Spacey is a little old to be playing Darin, who was only 37 when he died.

The trade publication Pollstar reported that Bon Jovi was the highest earning touring act of the year, taking in over $200 million (130.7m Pounds). Australian rockers AC/DC landed at number two for the second year in a row, with tickets sales from their recent trek totaling $177m (115m Pounds). U2, which was the top worldwide act in 2009, came in at third place with ticket sales totaling $160.9m (104.6 Pounds). Lady Gaga followed in fourth place, with Metallica at number five.

2011

The Nigerian government files a lawsuit against Rick Ross for cancelling a concert in Cross River State, Nigeria, the night before. Ross was scheduled to perform at the annual Calabar carnival celebration but pulled out at the last minute without citing a reason. The Cross River State government sued the rapper for breach of contract and to recover his performance fee.

Robert Lee Dickey, “Bobby” of the duo James & Bobby Purify, died at the age of 72 in Tallahassee, Florida.

2012

According to sales data, Adele’s 21 had overtaken Oasis’ (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? to become the UK’s fourth biggest selling album of all-time. Latest data confirmed that, Oasis’ 1995 second album had sold 4,555,000 copies to date, while Adele’s 21 has surged ahead with sales of over 4,562,000 copies. The news came just over a year since 21 overtook Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black to become the UK’s biggest selling album of the 21st Century.

2014

74-year-old Ringo Starr revealed plans for a new album in 2015 and hinted at a North American tour that would kick off in February or March. That album turned out to be “Postcards from Paradise”, which was produced completely by Starr himself and was recorded with a little help from his friends Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Richard Marx, Van Dyke Parks, Todd Rundgren and several others.

2016

America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame announced its 2017 inductees as ABBA, the Dave Clark Five, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, the Jackson 5, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, and Rod Stewart. In the Legends category, the Hall of Fame nominating board chose Pat Boone, Fats Domino, the Drifters, Connie Francis and Bobby Vee.

Azealia Banks reveals that she has been sacrificing chickens for three years when she posts an Instagram video of her cleaning up the mess.

2017

Britain’s Cabinet Office announced that Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees and Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr of The Beatles, had been selected for knighthood for their service to British music.

Billboard magazine revealed that Paul McCartney’s One On One tour was the highest grossing tour of the year, earning over $132 million. Between April and December, Macca played 37 concerts with an average ticket costing $145.

Vernon and Gladys lived in a 2 room shotgun shack, so called for being able to fire one in one door and out the window. The actual structure was likely long gone and a sample of the era has been painted, wallpapered and a porch swing added.

Gladys worked many jobs and is three months pregnant in the workforce photo from the Tupelo Garment Factory.

While living there, Vernon went to jail at the infamous Parchman Prison for altering a cheque – Gladys took young Elvis door to door to get signatures for an early release.

Tupelo also experienced a Tornado, which destroyed most of it.

The family later did a midnight move out of town, drifting across a few states before settling in Memphis, Tennessee.

Elvis would return to perform 2 Homecoming Concerts in 1956 and in 1957.

$10,000 was raised to built an Elvis Presley Youth Centre, which was never built, to Elvis’ disappointment in the 1960s, when he took a group of pals to see what he’d come from.
