Guy Mitchell was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Look At That Girl’ his second No.1 this year. As an international recording star of the 1950s he sold over six million singles.

The band, just got back to Memphis, travelled 80 miles to Bono to perform at the High School Gym, Bono, Arkansas.

The attendance was so great that the floor gave away in the middle of the show. Luckily there were no injury’s.

Elvis also got himself a new 1954 Cadillac Eldorado which he was showing off to Jimmy Day and others.

It Happened at the World’s Fair  Production: September 4-13 in Seattle

The World’s Fair amusement ride area, called the Gayway, was closed to the public so that the MGM crew could film there. Once word spread that morning that Elvis would be filming in the area, hundreds of Presley fans and curiosity seekers gathered on the outskirts of the Gayway.

Eric Clapton became the first non-Beatle to appear on one of their recordings when he overdubbed his guitar solo for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” George Harrison later said Clapton’s presence had a positive effect on the band: “It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behaviour.”

In one of the era’s early rock ‘n’ roll revival concerts, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis played Cobo Hall in Detroit.

After a show in the Memphis Mid-Southern Coliseum, James Brown announces his retirement from live performing, effective July 4, 1970. The Godfather of Soul says he’s tired. At the same time, he’s fighting a paternity suit filed by a one-time president of the local James Brown fan club.

Bob Dylan‘s “Lay Lady Lay” peaks at #7 on the Billboard singles chart. Departing from his usual high pitched, nasal style, Dylan’s low-key vocal also pushed the song to #5 in the UK.

The Rolling Stones held on to #1 for a third week with “Honky Tonk Women”.  Johnny Cash couldn’t get past them with “A Boy Named Sue”.  The Archies remained poised to move with “Sugar, Sugar” and CCR was up well with “Green River”.  The rest of an excellent Top 10:  The Youngbloods with “Get Together”, Jackie DeShannon’s “Put A Little Love In Your Heart”, Bob Dylan and “Lay Lady Lay”, Three Dog Night was up from 13-8 with “Easy To Be Hard”, Neil Diamond slipped with “Sweet Caroline” and Tom Jones had song #10–“I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”.

‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ went on general release in the UK, the movie featured Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. The filmmakers had initially wanted Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn to play the roles of Roberta and Susan, but the director decided to cast newcomers Rosanna Arquette and Madonna instead.

2,000 items of Elton John’s personal memorabilia including his boa feathers, ‘Pinball Wizard’ boots and hundreds of pairs of spectacles were auctioned at Sotheby’s in London.

The New Kids on the Block released the album “Hangin’ Tough.”

Neil Young’s “This Note’s For You” was named Best Video of the Year at the sixth annual MTV Rock Video Awards. The video had been initially banned by the music video station because it mentioned corporate sponsors by name.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are stopped from practicing on their own field, Three Rivers Stadium, because The Rolling Stones are rehearsing for their upcoming concert.

1990

Tom Fogerty, rhythm guitarist of CCR, died of AIDS at the age of 48 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Fogerty had contracted HIV when he had blood transfusions for his back ailments.

1997

While an estimated 2.5 billion people watched on television, Elton John sings a re-worked version of “Candle In The Wind” at the funeral of England’s Princess Diana. After the song is re-recorded and released as a single, it would become the largest selling record in history since UK and US singles charts began in the 1950s, with sales topping 33 million.

Earth, Wind And Fire announced that Viagra would sponsor their forthcoming 30th anniversary American tour.
