Elvis made a start with his Christmas album which Steve Sholes wanted for some time now. This all took place at Radio Recorders and he also recorded 3 songs for single release. In Charlotte, North Carolina, the “The Betty Freezor Show” on WBTV-TV became the first color videotaped program ever broadcast.
Military service at Fort Hood in Texas., for Advanced Tank Training as part of the Second Armored Division. He was stationed there for six months.

The Rolling Stones kicked off their fourth UK tour at The Astoria London. A 32-date package tour with Mike Berry and the Innocents The Mojos and Simon Scott and the Leroy’s.

“And I Love Her” by The Beatles peaks at #12 on the US singles chart while “If I Fell” stalled at #53.
The Animals started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘House Of The Rising Sun’. When first released the record company printed the time of the song on the record as three minutes feeling that the real time of four minutes was too long for radio airplay. To promote the group in the US, disc jockeys were sent boxes of animal crackers wrapped with special promotional material. The band would continue to turn out hits like “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “Monterey” and “San Franciscan Nights” before splitting up at the end of the decade.

The Rolling Stones recorded their eighth single ‘Get Off Of My Cloud’ at RCA studios in Hollywood. The song peaked at No.1 in the US and the UK.

After having his Beatle haircut chopped off and donning his once hated wire framed glasses, John Lennon started work on his role as Private Gripweed in the film ‘How I Won The War’. The black comedy directed by Richard Lester, was filmed in Spain in Almería Province and saw Lennon, taking a long-overdue break from The Beatles after nearly four years of constant touring.

Eric Clapton recorded the guitar solo for the Beatles’ song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the Abbey Road Studios in London.
Tiny Tim, whose real name was Herbert Khaury, sues Bouguet Records for $1 million in damages when the record label releases some of his early recordings without permission.
Elvis spent most of September in Palm Springs.

James Brown announced his retirement following a live performance at the Mid-Southern Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Rolling Stones held on to #1 for a third week with “Honky Tonk Women”. Johnny Cash couldn’t get past them with “A Boy Named Sue”. The Archies remained poised to move with “Sugar, Sugar” and CCR was up well with “Green River”. The rest of an excellent Top 10: The Youngbloods with “Get Together”, Jackie DeShannon’s “Put A Little Love In Your Heart”, Bob Dylan and “Lay Lady Lay”, Three Dog Night was up from 13-8 with “Easy To Be Hard”, Neil Diamond slipped with “Sweet Caroline” and Tom Jones had song #10–“I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”.

Janis Joplin started recording sessions recording a version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song ‘Me and Bobby McGee’. Joplin, (who was a lover and a friend of Kristofferson’s from the beginning of her career to her death), topped the US singles chart with the song in 1971 after her death, making the song the second posthumous No.1 single in US chart history after ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding.

That’s the Way It Is Production: Footage of an Elvis Appreciation Society convention in Luxembourg was shot on September 5, 1970. Radio Luxembourg DJs Tony Prince and Peter Aldersley are on hand to lead the festivities. A tandem bicycle owned by Elvis is raffled off to a lucky fan in the audience. Additionally, various musicians are seen performing their own versions of Elvis’ songs.

After all the troubles and threats, Elvis tried to reassemble the whole gang. So he has made up gold ID bracelets for all the guys with their nickname on the back. The costs were $1,486.50 and the jewelry was bought from Sol Schwartz and Lee Ableser in Beverly Hills.

The Carpenters hit #1 on the Easy Listening chart with their remake of the great Neil Sedaka song “Solitaire”.
Glen Campbell had the top song on this date with “Rhinestone Cowboy”. Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds were still hanging around at #2 with “Fallin’ In Love”. K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s former #1 “Get Down Tonight” was at #3 with Janis Ian moving up three with “At Seventeen”. The rest of the Top 10: James Taylor’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, the Bee Gees with their former #1 “Jive Talkin'”, David Bowie with his biggest career hit “Fame” at #7, the Isley Brothers and “Fight The Power”, Barry Manilow’s adaptation of Frederic Chopin (“Could It Be Magic”) moved into the Top 10 and the former #1 from the Eagles–“One of These Nights” was #10.
Red Octopus completed an amazing comeback for Jefferson Starship, rising to the #1 album. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John fell to 2 while Janis Ian enjoyed the biggest album of her career with Between the Lines. The Eagles held steady at #4 with One of These Nights.
1978: Tom Wilson, producer of the Bob Dylan album Highway 61 Revisted, died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in Los Angeles.
1980: Diana Ross remained at #1 for a fourth week on the R&B chart with “Upside Down”.
Earlier this week Elvis was hospitalised. Not only for fatigue, but more important, according to Dr. Nick, for his depressed state of mind, his intestinal and bowel problems, his liver and a high cholesterol count. A couple of nurses agreed to give Elvis around the clock care. For this special care Elvis had a Pontiac delivered at the hospital for Mrs. Cocke’s special attention.

During Jerry Lewis’ annual Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day Telethon, Frank Sinatra announced that he’d brought a friend along, and produced Dean Martin, Lewis’ former comedy partner, who had not spoken to him since the team’s split two decades earlier. The studio audience erupted in laughter when Lewis greeted Martin with, “So, you working?”

Oasis appeared at The Hacienda in Manchester to celebrate the launch of their debut album Definitely Maybe. The album went on to become the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK and marked the beginning of Oasis’ success in America, selling over one million copies there

Capitol Records released The Beatles Anthology video set. Over ten hours of material made up the set.

Elton John sang an updated version of “Candle In The Wind” at the funeral of England’s Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey in London. The song, which was named “Candle In The Wind ’97” would go on to become one of the top-selling singles of all-time.
1998
Aerosmith scored their first US No.1 single with the Diane Warren written song ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’. The song which was featured in the 1998 film Armageddon gave the band their first No.1 single after 28 years together.
1999
After spending 58 weeks on the UK album chart, Shania Twain went to No.1 with ‘Come On Over’. It became the best-selling country music album, and the second best-selling studio album by a female act. To date, the album has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
2001
“Junichiro Koizumi Presents – My Favorite Elvis Songs” was released exclusively in Japan. The collection of Elvis Presley songs were picked by Japan’s prime minister.

Paul McCartney’s wife, Heather Mills, accepted 50,000 Pounds for libel damages over an article in The Sunday Mirror, which had suggested that Mills had acted dishonestly over cash collected for an earthquake appeal.

Arctic Monkeys won this year’s UK Mercury Prize for their album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.’ The Sheffield-based bands album became the fastest-selling debut in chart history after shifting more than 360,000 copies in its first week of release in Feb 2006.
The Elvis Presley two CD and one DVD set “Essential” was released in Australia.

A study of more than 36,000 people from around the world concluded that musical tastes and personality type were closely related. The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh in the UK suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal fans were gentle and at ease with themselves. Fans of Indie music had low self-esteem and were not hard working, fans of Rap music had high self-esteem and were outgoing. Country & Western fans were hardworking and outgoing, Reggae fans were creative but not hardworking, and fans of chart pop had high self-esteem, were not creative, but where hardworking and outgoing.
2010
Critics in Denmark panned a series of paintings by Bob Dylan which were on display at a museum in Copenhagen. One professor claimed “Bob Dylan paints like any other amateur. He is what we used to call a Sunday painter.”
2012
Singer-songwriter Joe South, who had hits in the late 1960s and early ’70s, including ‘Games People Play,’ ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ and ‘(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden,’ died at home in Flowery Branch, Atlanta from a heart attack, aged 72. South also played on Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde album.

Dennis Greene, an original member of Sha Na Na, passed away at the age of 66. Greene sang lead on “Tears On My Pillow” when the group appeared in the 1978 film Grease.
2016
An asteroid was named after Freddie Mercury to mark what would have been the singer’s 70th birthday. The Queen frontman has had his name attached to Asteroid 17473, which was discovered in 1991 – the year he died. Queen guitarist Brian May told a gathering of 1,250 fans at Montreux Casino in Switzerland that the asteroid would now be known as Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury.
