In the South, with other Acts, Mrs Jimmy Rogers, Jim Reeves, Al Terry, Jack Cardwell, Jimmy Swan, Ernie Chaffin, Ann Raye, Ray Parker and Hillbilly Evans; Elvis performed at the Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park, New Orleans.

19 year old Jerry Lee Lewis arrives at Sun Records hoping for an audition, only to find that owner Sam Phillips is on vacation in Florida. Producer and engineer Jack Clement has Jerry Lee record some demos that Phillips will hear when he gets back and Lewis will begin recording as a solo artist and session musician in early December.

Elvis Presley’s single “Hound Dog” hit #2 in the U.S.

Elvis went to Radio Recorders. This was a studio on Santa Monica Boulevard. Elvis felt comfortable right from the start and with the engineer, Thorne Nogar. They worked from 1.00 to 8.00 p.m. and recorded material for Elvis’ second album as well as his new single. Because there was not a piano player present either Elvis or Gordon Stoker did the piano parts.

The Biggest Show Of Stars package tour kicked off at Brooklyn Paramount featuring: Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Drifters, The Everly Brothers and Frankie Lymon. On some dates artists were unable to play because of segregation laws.

Meanwhile, with supporting acts: Howard Hardin, The Burns Twins & Evelyn, Joe Termini, Wells & The Four Fays, Paul Desmond and the The Jordanaires, who also join Elvis on stage: Elvis did 2 concerts at different venues.

Elvis performed at the Lincoln Bowl, Tacoma, Washington at 2.00 p.m.

Elvis then performed med at 10.00 p.m. at the Sick’s Stadium, Seattle, Washington. Elvis gave a 30 minute show in front of 15,000 fans. In addition to his own hits he sung Fool’s Hall Of Fame, which was a new Sun release by Rudi Richardson. Elvis told the crowd this would be his new single, but in fact he never recorded it.

The Byrds played the first of an 11-night run at the Whisky-a-go-go, Hollywood, California. The Whisky a Go-Go opened in 1964 with a live band led by Johnny Rivers and a short-skirted female DJ spinning records between sets from a suspended cage. When the girl began to dance during River’s sets the audience thought it was part of the act – and the concept of Go-Go dancers in cages was born.

“The Fastest Guitar Alive,” starring Roy Orbison in his only lead acting role in a feature film, with Sammy Jackson, Maggie Pierce, and Joan Freeman, opened in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters.

Following the death of their manager, Brian Epstein, The Beatles meet at Paul’s house in St. John’s Wood to discuss their future. They decide to postpone their planned trip to India and to begin the already-delayed production of the Magical Mystery Tour movie. They have two songs already recorded for the movie, ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and ‘Your Mother Should Know’.

Despite being embroiled in bitter feuds between themselves, The Beach Boys played a free concert in New York’s Central Park to an estimated crowd of over 150,000.

Blondie featuring former Playboy Bunny Debra Harry, signed their first major record company contract with Chrysalis Records.

Generation X released their debut single “Your Generation.”

The Eagles played at the Alpine Music Theater in East Troy, Michigan.

A 10-day Elvis Presley convention began at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel.

1979

U2 released their very first record, an EP titled ‘U2-3.’ With an initial run of 1,000 individually numbered copies the tracks were produced by the band with Chas de Whalley and was available only in Ireland.

INXS appeared live for the first time at the Oceanview Hotel in Toukley, New South Wales, Australia.

Van Morrison, Talking Heads, Squeeze and the Undertones performed at the  Royal Highland Exhibition Centre during the Edinburgh Rock Festival in Scotland.

Chic registered week #6 at #1 on the R&B chart with “Good Times”.

The 42nd career hit for Dionne Warwick was her first Top 10 in five years, launching a big comeback for her.  On this date, “I’ll Never Love This Way Again” moved from 14 to 10.

Get the Knack by the Knack occupied the top spot on the Album chart for the fourth week.  The former #1 album Breakfast in America by Supertramp spent its ninth straight week at either #2 or #3 since it fell, highly impressive. Candy-O by the Cars remained at 3 while I Am by Earth, Wind & Fire came in fourth.  The rest of the Top 10:  Million Mile Reflections from the Charlie Daniels Band, the great album Discovery from ELO, Risque by Chic moved from 32 to 7, Rust Never Sleeps from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, meanwhile, was up just one, Donna Summer’s former #1 album Bad Girls was now at 9 and Midnight Magic from the Commodores entered the Top 10.

The album “Our Memories Of Elvis Volume 2” hit #157 in the U.S.

Stevie Wonder opened a six-night sold-out series of shows at Wembley Arena in London.  Paul McCartney was one of the many fans in the audience.

After a 25-year career, Tina Turner had her first solo No.1 single in the US with ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’. This song was originally written for Cliff Richard, however the song was rejected. It was then offered to Donna Summer, who has stated she sat with it for a couple of years but never recorded it.

Lionel Richie’s third #1 Adult Contemporary song from his album Can’t Slow Down, “Stuck On You”, landed its fifth week at the top.

Tina Turner scored one of the biggest comebacks of the Rock Era, hitting #1 on this date with “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.  It had been 13 years since she and former husband Ike had hit the Top 10 with their remake of the CCR song “Proud Mary”.  John Waite moved up to #2 with “Missing You”, Lionel Richie was stuck on 3 with “Stuck On You” and Ray Parker, Jr. dropped with his former #1 “Ghostbusters”.  Prince’s former #1 “When Doves Cry” was at position #5.  The rest of the Top 10:  Newcomer Cyndi Lauper with “She Bop”, Corey Hart came in seventh with “Sunglasses At Night”, Prince had another Top 10–“Let’s Go Crazy”, which moved from 16 all the way to 8, Huey Lewis & the News posted their fourth straight Top 10 from the album Sports (“If This Is It”) and Peabo Bryson remained at 10 with “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again”.

The album “Tonight” was released by David Bowie.

1989

A judge in Dublin, Ireland, decided not to convict U2’s Adam Clayton of marijuana possession, even though he had admitted to the crime. Clayton agreed to contribute money to a women’s center in Dublin.

1990

Prince topped the U.K. Album chart with Graffiti Bridge.

The fastest-rising song on this date was “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers, a song which had reached #4 25 years previously, but had gained newfound popularity after being featured in the movie Ghost.

The Elvis Presley album “The Great Performances” hit #62 in the U.K.

Coldplay scored their second UK No.1 album with A Rush Of Blood To The Head. The album won the band the 2003 Grammy for Best Alternative Album for the second time in a row, successive to their previous win in the same category, and the 2004 Grammy for Record of the Year for the song ‘Clocks’

Atomic Kitten began four weeks at #1 in the U.K. with their remake of the Blondie smash “The Tide Is High”.

2005

77 year old Fats Domino was rescued from the flooding in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina. He had earlier told his agent that he planned to remain in his home despite the order to evacuate.

Barry Cowsill, bassist for the Cowsills, died from injuries suffered during Hurricane Katrina at the age of 51.  His body was not recovered until December 28 from Chartres Street Wharf in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He had left several urgent phone messages for his sister Susan on September 1.

2006

The Isley Brothers leader, Ronald Isley, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for evading federal income taxes. The 65 year old singer was found guilty of five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file a tax return on millions of dollars in income.

While awaiting trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson and with lawsuits and counter suits revolving around him, 65-year-old Phil Spector marries 26-year-old Rachelle Marie Short during a small ceremony. The newlyweds would spend just over two and a half years together before Phil was found guilty and sentenced to 19 years to life in the California state prison system. He will be 88 years old before becoming eligible for parole.

2008

Jerry Reed, whose hits included “Amos Moses” (#8 in 1971) and “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot” (#9 in 1971), died of complications from emphysema at the age of 71. He is also remembered for his 1977 co-starring role in Smokey And The Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason and Sally Field, in which his song “East Bound and Down” was featured. Reed had played session musician for Elvis, who recorded several of Reed’s songs.

The Bee Gees‘ Robin Gibb was given the all-clear after undergoing gastrointestinal surgery to correct the same health crisis that cost his twin brother Maurice his life seven years ago. Robin had been rushed to hospital after suffering crippling stomach aches a few days earlier.

2013

Classic Beatles albums finally went platinum after the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) changed its sales award rules. Gold or platinum status has become synonymous with record success but the system has only been in place since 1973. This made Sgt. Pepper’s a triple-platinum album, having sold more than 900,000 copies since 1994. In total, the album is estimated to have sold 5.1 million units in the UK since its 1967 release. The albums Revolver, Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver and The White Album also now had platinum status.

2016

A Blue Plaque marking the first home Freddie Mercury lived in when he arrived in England has been unveiled. The Queen frontman moved to the semi-detached home in Feltham, west London, after his family left Zanzibar in 1964 when Mercury was 17.

News reports began to surface that the Abby Road Studio’s console used to record early tracks by The Beatles was being put up for sale by Vintage King Audio. No price was mentioned for the unit, named REDD.37, which was supplanted by a newer model, REDD.51, in January, 1964.
