The Beatles arrived in San Francisco to begin their first tour of America and were met by 9,000 frenzied fans.  The Beatles were driven into a protective enclosure so that photographers could take pictures.  The fans, however, pressed against the fencing, and the Beatles barely managed to get out before it came down on them.

Sonny & Cher were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘I Got You Babe’, the duo’s only UK No.1. Sonny Bono was inspired to write the song to capitalize on the popularity of the term “babe,” as heard in Bob Dylan’s ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’.

The Beatles were in concert at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia before a sellout crowd of 35,000.  Fans paid $5.50 for the highly sought-after tickets.

The Beatles held a press conference at University College in Bangor, North Wales with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Beatles announced that they had become disciples of the guru and that they renounced the use of drugs. The four had become members of the Maharishi’s ‘Spiritual Regeneration Movement’, which obligated them to donate one week’s earnings each month to the organization.

Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” was released as the opening track on the U.S. release of “Are You Experienced.”

Elvis and Priscilla arrived home from Vegas to Memphis at 8.20 a.m.

August 26, 1968

Apple Corps releases five single records, including The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” backed by “Revolution”. It will become the band’s biggest hit.

Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley P.T.A.” was certified Gold. The single eventually sold more than six million copies and Riley became the first woman ever to top the U.S. Pop and Country singles charts with the same song.

The Vegas Artist in Residence and Tour Decade

Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, (his last ever UK appearance), Donovan, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Arrival, Cactus, Family, Taste, Mungo Jerry, ELP, The Doors, The Who, Spirit, The Moody Blues, Chicago, Procol Harum, Sly and the Family Stone and Free all appeared over three days at the third Isle Of Wight Festival. An official opening party was held at Jimi Hendrix‘s Electric Lady Studio in New York City.

The new feminist movement in America, led by Betty Friedan, staged a nationwide Women’s Strike for Equality.

There was a warning that Elvis would be kidnapped somewhere during the night and extra security was added at the hotel.

10cc made their live debut at the Palace Lido Isle of Man at the start of an UK tour. Comprising of Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who had written and recorded together for some three years before assuming the 10cc name.

Marvin Gaye started a long run at #1 on the R&B chart with “Let’s Get It On”.

Diana Ross hit #1 again with “Touch Me In The Morning”, jumping over both “Live And Let Die” from Wings and “Brother Louie” by the Stories.  Maureen McGovern fell with “The Morning After” and Marvin Gaye had his 45th hit with “Let’s Get It On” at #5.  The rest of the Top 10:  Jim Croce’s former #1 “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”, Gilbert O’Sullivan followed up his #1 “Alone Again (Naturally)” with “Get Down” at #7, Helen Reddy moved from 15 to 8 with “Delta Dawn”, Charlie Daniels had “Uneasy Rider” and Chicago moved into the Top 10 with their great song “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day”.

The date was declared Women’s Equality Day by U.S. Presidential Proclamation, to commemorate the 19th Amendment passed in 1920, which gave the vote to American women on a basis equal to men.

Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Golden Earing, Aerosmith, Doobie Brothers, Hawkwind, Racing Cars, John Miles, Graham Parker, The Enid, No Dice and Frankie Miller’s Full House all appeared at the 17th three day Reading Festival, England. A three day ticket cost £7.95.

The Police performed as a trio for the first time after guitarist Henri Padovani left the group when they played at Rebecca’s in Birmingham, England.

1978

A crowd of 80,000 people attended the first Canada Jam Festival held at Mosport Park, just north of Bowmanville Ontario. The show featured sets by The Doobie Brothers, Dave Mason, The Commodores, Kansas and The Atlanta Rhythm Section.

Frankie Valli went to No.1 on the US singles chart with the Barry Gibb song ‘Grease’. It went on to sell over 2 million in the States (a No. 3 hit in the UK).

1979

Chic somehow reached #1 with “Good Times” while the Knack moved into position with “My Sharona”.  Barbra Streisand had song #3–“The Main Event/Fight”.  Donna Summer slipped from the top with “Bad Girls” while Earth, Wind & Fire moved from 19 to 5 with their great song “After The Love Has Gone”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Dr. Hook with one of the biggest of their 21 career hits–“When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman”, Anita Ward with “Ring My Bell”, the Charlie Daniels Band surged from 21 to 8 with “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”, Raydio edged up with “You Can’t Change That” and Elton John landed his 16th Top 10 hit with “Mama Can’t Buy You Love”.

The Knack continued to possess the #1 album with Get the Knack.  Bad Girls from Donna Summer was #2 followed by Supertramp’s Breakfast In America, still in the Top 3 after 21 weeks.  Candy-O by the Cars was fourth.  The rest of the Top 10:  Teddy from Teddy Pendergrass, I Am by Earth, Wind & Fire, Discovery from ELO at 7, the Who couldn’t get past #8 with “The Kids Are Alright” SoundtrackCheap Trick At Budokan was #9 and Charlie Daniels Band reached #10 with Million Mile Reflections.

1981

Ottawa City Council named ‘Paul Anka Day’ to celebrate his 25th anniversary in show-business. The council also named a street in Ottawa ‘Paul Anka Drive’ in his honour. The Canadian singer songwriter had written over 900 songs including the classic ‘My Way’.

The City of Liverpool, England named four streets after the Beatles–John Lennon Drive, Paul McCartney Way, Ringo Starr Drive and George Harrison Close.

The movie “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” starring David Bowie and Tom Conti, had its North American premiere.

The Police, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and R.E.M. were at Shea Stadium in New York City.

Bon Jovi released the album Slippery When Wet in the United States on Mercury Records.

Sonny Bono, who once said that he never voted until he was 53, announced that he was running for mayor of Palm Springs, California. He won the election in 1988 and went on to win a seat in Congress in 1996.

1989

Ringo Starr wins a court order to prevent a record producer from releasing material Starr considered to be of inferior quality due to the impaired state Starr was in when it was recorded.

1990

back in the days when she wore the Triple Crown (#1 on the Popular chart, #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #1 on the R&B chart), something Mariah Carey can’t come close to these days.  “Vision Of Love” was #1 overall for the third straight week.

1993

A double sided acetate of The Beatles performing live at The Cavern Club in Liverpool sold for £16,500 at Christies, London, a world record price for a recording.

U2 performed at the National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff, Wales.

1995

Blur scored their first UK No.1 single with ‘Country House’ and won a media battle with Oasis for the No.1 position. Both acts released their new singles on the same day, ‘Country House’ topped the chart, selling 270,000 copies, compared to ‘Roll with It’ which sold 220,000, seeing Oasis entering the chart at No.2.

Boyzone began a tour of Southeast Asia in Gangalore, India. It was a first-time tour launch for the region by an international act.

1998

A review of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was ordered by U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

1999

Johnny Byrne, guitarist with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, died from motor neurone disease in Liverpool, Merseyside, England at the age of 59.

Two acts who love to wear makeup settled out of court.  Alice Cooper claimed that the KISS song “Dreamin'” was copied from his 1971 song “Eighteen”.

2001

Madonna was filmed in concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. The video was released as “Madonna – Drowned World Tour 2001.”

Coldplay, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nelly Furtado headlined the V2001 Festival at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, England.

2002

Peter Noone, better known as “Herman” of Herman’s Hermits, filed a federal lawsuit against what he said were bogus Hermits. He was seeking an injunction blocking Barry Whitwam, the group’s original drummer, from performing with other musicians under the Herman’s Hermits name. The band was forced to use the name Herman’s Hermits starring Barry Whitwam when they tour in North America, but they remain billed as Herman’s Hermits worldwide.

Rolling Stone Magazine named Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist in Rock history. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ry Cooder also made the top 10 list.

US Cinematographer David Myers died after suffering a stroke. He worked of various music films including Woodstock, Elvis On Tour, The Last Waltz, The Grateful Dead Movie, Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Cracked Actor: A Film About David Bowie.

Singer Laura Branigan died of a brain aneurysm. She had had a 1982 US No.2 & UK No.6 single with ‘Gloria’ and a 1984 US No.4 & UK No.5 with ‘Self Control’. She had also played Janis Joplin in the US musical Love, Janis.

Ashlee Simpson had the top album with Autobiography.

2005

A plaque was unveiled by fellow Quarrymen John Duff Lowe and Colin Hantonat at the site where the band which was to become The Beatles made their first recordings. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison recorded a version of Buddy Holly’s ‘That’ll Be The Day’ and a Lennon-Harrison song, ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’ as The Quarrymen at the Percy Philips studio in Liverpool in 1958.

, A post office near the Los Angeles studio where Ray Charles recorded much of his music was renamed after the R&B legend. A federal bill was signed by US President George Bush to rename the post office. Charles, died in June 2004 at the age of 74, suffering from acute liver disease.

After two years, The Rolling Stones played the final show on their A Bigger Bang World Tour at the O2 Arena in London, England. The longest and biggest tour of their career, it became the highest grossing in rock history ($560 million).

Scott McKenzie, who wrote an anthem for a generation (“San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)”, co-wrote “Kokomo” for the Beach Boys, and also worked with the Mamas and the Papas, died in Los Angeles at age 73.

2013

After accusing the Estate of Michael Jackson of undervaluing a number of Jackson’s assets by hundreds of millions of dollars, the Internal Revenue Service issued the estate a $702 million bill for federal taxes and penalties. The estate followed by filing a court challenge to the bill.

2014

Kate Bush made her stage comeback at London’s Hammersmith Apollo to an ecstatic response from fans at her first live concert for 35 years. Bush received a standing ovation as she closed the show with ‘Cloudbusting’, from her 1985 hit album The Hounds of Love. The 22 shows had completely sold out in less than fifteen minutes, after tickets were released in March of this year.
