The pro KKK movie “The Birth of a Nation,” starring Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, and Henry B. Walthall, opened in New York City. Despite protests from the NAACP, the $2-a-seat ticket price, and a running time of almost three hours, the film played in New York for 10 months and was viewed by an estimated 825,000 people.

Singer/actress Gale Storm’s cover of  “Why Do Fools Fall In Love?,” reaching the Top 10 (#9).  It was the first time that the original black artist’s version charted higher than the white cover artist on the pop charts – The Original  reached #6 for Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers’.
The Platters enjoyed a 10th week at #1 on the R&B chart with “The Great Pretender”
“Heartbreak Hotel” made the national charts #68. It moved up the chart quickly, and by the end of the month it was inside the top 10 at #9 and on its way to #1.  Although many staff members at RCA Victor believed that the release was a mistake, the suicide song would rise to #1 on the US Pop chart for 8 weeks and spend 17 weeks at the top of the Country chart. “Heartbreak Hotel” would later be ranked #45 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Elvis wrote a check for $500 toward the purchase of a house for himself and his parents at 1034 Audubon Drive, a well-to-do neighborhood east of downtown Memphis.

The head of the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago, Samuel Cardinal Strich, bans Rock ‘n’ Roll from Catholic schools in his district, saying “When our schools and centers stoop to such things as Rock And Roll tribal rhythms, they are failing seriously in their duty.” A week after his remarks, a survey of record retailers, distributors and disc jockeys revealed that the Cardinal’s words had no affect on Rock record sales in the area

Dee Iewin & the Pastels charted with their classic ballad, Been So Long” (#24 pop, #4 R&B). The group formed at an Air Force base in Narsarssuak, Greenland. Irwin went on to have the hit “Swingin’ On A Star” (#38 pop) in 1963, with uncredited Little Eva.

The Drifters, with new lead vocalist Ben E. King, record their breakthrough hit, “There Goes My Baby”, at Atlantic’s studios in New York. The song will become the group’s first of 16 Billboard Top 40 hits.

Accompanied by friends Red West and Lamar Fike; Elvis used a three-day pass to visit Munich and call unannounced on Vera Tschechowa, an 18-year-old actress whom he’d met a few months earlier. Together, they visited the Moulin Rouge nightclub.

The Beatles finished a tour at the Gaumont Cinema in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.  They had begun opening for Helen Shapiro, but ended the tour as the headline act.

Patsy Cline gave her last public performance, a benefit in Kansas City.

Neil Young Stephen Stills and Richie Furay formed Buffalo Springfield in Los Angeles. Among the first wave of American bands to become popular in the wake of the British invasion, the group combined rock, folk, and country music into a sound all its own. Its million-selling song ‘For What It’s Worth’ became a political anthem for the turbulent late 1960s.  (Neil Young is Canadian)

Fans at Ottawa, Ontario’s Coliseum riot after waiting an hour for The Animals to perform. The band however, refuses to play unless they are paid in advance. The concert is eventually cancelled.

The Jeff Beck group, featuring a virtually unknown singer named Rod Stewart, along with bass player Ron Wood and drummer Aynsley Dunbar, make their debut in London, England.

South African radio lifts its five-year ban on Beatles’ music.

His career was just underway, but Elton John had his second #1 album, following up Honky Chateau with Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player.  Carly Simon was a solid #2 with No Secrets with previous #1 The World is a Ghetto by War falling to 3.  Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandell had Dueling Banjos while Neil Diamond was captured on a Hot August Night.  The rest of the Top 10:  Rocky Mountain High from John Denver, the Soundtrack to “Lady Sings the Blues” from Diana Ross, the excellent Talking Book from Stevie Wonder at #8, More Hot Rocks (big hits & fazed cookies), the compilation from the Rolling Stones, and  Carole King with Rhymes & Reasons at #10.

Jimi Hendrix‘s personal manager, Michael Jeffrey, was one of 68 people killed in a plane crash in France. Jeffery was en route to a court appearance in London related to Hendrix.
Elvis performed at the Astrodome, Houston, Texas at 2.00 and 7.00 p.m; setting an another attendance record for a “one day appearance” of 88,000 (estimated).

Elvis flew to California for the recording session which was originally planned for the fall and in preparation for his Vegas opening.

After his February ’77 tour Elvis returned to Memphis.
Elvis had planned a vacation in Hawaii in order to show the islands to Ginger Alden.
Before leaving, he takes care of several business matters, including a loan to Dr. Nick for an additional $55.000 at 7 percent interest with a repayment schedule of twenty-five years.
Also, at his father’s urging, in the early hours of the morning of March 3, Elvis finally signed his will, which designates Vernon as executor and trustee, entrusting to him total responsibility for the ‘health education, comfortable maintenance and welfare’ of himself, Grandma, and Lisa Marie, the sole heir. Ginger Alden is witness to the will.

Van Halen began their first full tour opening for Journey at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois.

The Bee Gees scored their fourth UK No.1 single with ‘Tragedy.’ Also today The Bee Gees went to No.1 on the US album chat with ‘Spirits Having Flown’, the brother’s second US No.1 album.

Anne Murray continued to hold on to #1 on the newly renamed Adult Contemporary chart with “I Just Fall In Love Again”.

Van Halen began their first world tour.

Rod Stewart remained at #1 for the fourth week with “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”  “Fire” by the Pointer Sisters was the top challenger but Gloria Gaynor was moving into the mix with “I Will Survive”.  The Bee Gees were up to #4 after only four weeks with “Tragedy” but Olivia Newton-John was on the way down with “A Little More Love”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Donna Summer had her fifth Top 10, this time with Brooklyn Dreams on “Heaven Knows”, Chic’s #1 smash “Le Freak”, the Village People scared young boys everywhere with “Y.M.C.A.”, Nicolette Larson and “Lotta’ Love” and the Doobie Brothers cruised from 23 to 10 with “What A Fool Believes”.

London auction house Sotheby’s holds its first ever auction of Rock memorabilia. Among the notable items sold were four US dollar bills signed by The Beatles that went for 220 Pounds ($528).

A napkin signed by Elvis Presley was bought for 500 pounds at a Sotheby’s auction in London.

U2 begin their first major tour of the US with two shows at a Washington, DC, club called The Bayou.
The documentary movie “This is Elvis” premiered in Memphis, TN.

A re-formed version of The Mamas And The Papas, with original members John Phillips and Denny Doherty, joined by Phillips’ daughter Mackenzie and Spanky McFarlane of Spanky and Our Gang, play the first show of their brief reunion tour.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” became the first album to spawn seven Billboard Top Ten singles when the title track reached #4 and it matched  the record of 31 weeks at #1 on the Album chart set by Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Rockwell with considerable help from Michael Jackson had the new R&B #1–“Somebody’s Watching Me”.

Nena started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ’99 Red Balloons.’ Originally sung in German, ’99 Luftballons’ was re-recorded in English as ’99 Red Balloons’. The song was a No.2 hit in the US and the only UK hit for Nena making her a One Hit Wonder.

 Billy Joel scored an AC #1 with “An Innocent Man”.

1985

Madame Tussaud’s waxworks unveiled their look-alike of Michael Jackson.

The detective series “Moonlighting,” starring Cybill Shepard and Bruce Willis in one of the first successful examples of comedy-drama, or “dramedy,” began a five-season run on ABC-TV.

Metallica released the album Master of Puppets.

1989

New York’s Madison Square Garden: The Four Tops performed with Jay & the Americans, Sha Na Na, and Tommy James & the Shondells performed the twenty-fourth annual Rock & Roll Revival Spectacular

A day after the song debuts in a 2-minute Pepsi commercial, the video for Madonna‘s “Like A Prayer” hits MTV and causes an uproar.

1990

During a world tour Paul McCartney played the first of 6 sold-out nights at the Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan. The final night was broadcast live to venues in 10 other Japanese cities; Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, Matsuyama, Nagoya, Niigata, Osaka, Sapporp, Sendai and Takamatsu.

It had been four months, since their previous chart-topper but Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville had another #1 together on the Adult Contemporary chart with “All My Life”

Janet Jackson had her eighth Top 10 in five years and “Escapade” took the final step to #1.  “Dangerous” from Roxette was second while Paula Abdul’s previous #1 “Opposites Attract” was third.  Behind them, the B-52’s and “Roam”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “All or Nothing” from Milli Vanilli, Gloria Estefan with “Here We Are”, Bad English and “Price Of Love” at #7, the Cover Girls with “We Can’t Go Wrong”, Alannah Myles entered the Top 10 with “Black Velvet” and Michel’le edged up with “No More Lies”.

Soundgarden release the third and final single off Badmotorfinger, “Rusty Cage.” B-sides differ depending on the territory – among them are covers of Devo’s “Girl U Want” and the Rolling Stones’ “Stray Cat Blues.”

1994

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana lapsed into a coma in Italy after taking a combination of Valium and champagne.

1998

C-BO was arrested for parole violation. The violation was the use of lyrics that encouraged violence against police officers. He was held without bail.

Madonna‘s album “Ray of Light” was released.

After spending nearly two years promoting her debut album, Tidal, a burned-out Fiona Apple cancels her spring tour. From this point forward, she limits her public appearances and takes lots of down time, sometimes going several years between albums.

2000

Tom Jones won the Best male artist at this year’s Brit Awards. Other winners included Travis for Best band and Best album ‘The Man Who.’ Best single went to Robbie Williams for ‘She’s The One’, Five won Best pop act, TLC won Best International group, Beck won Best International Male, Macy Gray won Best newcomer and Outstanding Contribution went to The Spice Girls.

Former Bay City Rollers drummer Derek Longmuir was released on bail after being charged with downloading child pornography from the internet and keeping indecent videos in his home.

2002

Jennifer Lopez had the new #1 song with “Ain’t It Funny”.

2003

Penguin Group announced that Madonna had written five illustrated story books for readers aged 6 and above. Publication was scheduled to begin in September 2003.

Elton John announced he was planning to marry his long-term partner David Furnish if new UK laws allowed it. A Civil Partnership bill was being passed through Parliament which would give gay couple’s greater rights.

2006

61 year old Gary Glitter was jailed for three years after a Vietnamese court found him guilty of sexually abusing two young girls aged 11 and 12 at his home in the resort town of Vung Tau, in southern Vietnam. Years later, a UK court sentences him to 16 years for similar offenses.

Singer/guitarist Charlie Hodge, Elvis Presley’s longtime assistant, died of a blood clot in his lung at age 71.

Robin Thicke tops four different Billboard charts, thanks to his second album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke. The album is at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally, while “Lost Without U” tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Hot Adult R&B Airplay charts.

2008

Beatles engineer Norman Smith died at the age of 85. Smith who worked on every studio recording the band made between 1962 and 1965 was nicknamed “Normal Norman” by John Lennon. As a producer in 1966, he signed Pink Floyd and produced their early albums including Saucerful of Secrets and as Hurricane Smith had the 1971 UK No.2 hit ‘Don’t Let It Die’.

To celebrate the release of U2’s twelfth studio album and their appearance every night for a week on The Late Show with David Letterman, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg temporarily renamed part of 53rd street in Midtown Manhattan U2 Way.

Katy Perry’s “Part Of Me” became the 20th song in the Rock Era to debut at #1, and was her seventh consecutive Top 5 single.

Adele became the first female artist in the Rock Era to place three singles in the Top 10 simultaneously.  She accomplished the feat today as “Rolling In The Deep”, “Someone Like You” and “Set Fire To The Rain” all made the Top 10.  Adele also became the first female artist to place two singles in the Top 5 simultaneously (“Rolling In The Deep” and “Set Fire To The Rain”) and the first female artist to have two albums (19 and 21) in the Top 5 of the Album chart.

Bobby Rogers, a founding member of the Motown group The Miracles, died at the age of 73 following a long illness. His voice can be heard on the group’s hits “Shop Around”, “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”, “The Tracks of My Tears”, “Going to a Go-Go”, “I Second That Emotion” and “The Tears of a Clown”.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that they were currently reviewing a petition asking them to consider reopening the investigation into the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper on February 3rd, 1959. The petition, submitted by New England pilot L.J. Coon, asked the NTSB to consider factors other than pilot error when determining what caused the crash.
British singer Rolf Harris had his CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) revoked by Queen Elizabeth II after he was jailed in 2014 and charged with 12 indecent assaults of four school girls. Harris enjoyed a string of UK hits including the #1 single “Two Little Boys” and “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport”, which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963.

During his show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Billy Joel brought two members of The Young Rascals, Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish on stage. The pair proceeded to play their biggest hit, “Good Lovin'”, with Cavaliere reprising his famous Hammond B-3 organ solo.
Nickelback‘s album All The Right Reasons is certified Diamond for sales of over 10 million copies in the United States, making them just the fourth Canadian act to reach that level. The other three are female artists: Celine DionShania Twain and Alanis Morissette.
Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch was listed for sale again after being renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch. The property near Santa Barbara, California, had a new $67 million asking price, a big difference from the $100 million it hit the market at in 2016.

2018

Journey’s “Greatest Hits” became just the third album to spend 500 weeks on the Billboard 200 in the chart’s 61-year history. It joined Bob Marley And The Wailers’ “Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers” (510 weeks) and the longevity all-time leader, Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” (937 weeks). The disc debuted in December, 1988 and peaked at #10 the following year. Between October 1990 and December 2009 it disappeared from the chart, but after a change in eligibility rules it returned and has stayed there pretty much ever since.

“Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley moved to #1 on the Easy Listening chart.

Cliff Richard scored his second UK No.1 album with ‘The Young Ones’, which spent six weeks at the top of the charts. Chubby toppled the classic “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by the Tokens.

Chubby Checker & the Dreamlovers’ recording of  “The Twist” charted for the second time in two years and went on to reach #1 pop, the first and only time in rock ‘n’ roll history (other than a Bing Crosby Christmas record) that a record returned to #1 after a chart absence of more than a year.

The Beatles recorded a TV appearance on the ABC Television program “Thank Your Lucky Stars” in Birmingham playing their new single, ‘Please Please Me’ The show was broadcast on January 19.

Brenda Lee sang “All Alone Am I” on CBS-TV’s “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Robert Goulet, Jackie Mason and Sophie Tucker also performed on the program.

Bob Dylan performed in a radio play for the BBC in London. The play was called “The Madhouse on Castle Street” and he played a folk singer.8.

Elvis sent a telegram to the Colonel: “Regarding the Beatles. I feel the same way as you feel about them, I just hope the fans over here are as good to them as the fans in England are to me. Sincerely yours, Elvis Presley.”
This appeared to be a “canned” telegram.

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles reached #1 on the R&B chart with “I Second That Emotion”.
Against the advice of Columbia Records executives, Johnny Cash visits Folsom State Prison in California to record a live album. The resulting LP, “Live At Folsom Prison” would become one of Johnny’s biggest selling records, reaching #1 on the Country album chart and #13 on the Hot 200. It also produced one of his most memorable hit singles, “Folsom Prison Blues”. In 2003, “Live At Folsom Prison” was certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over three million and was ranked #88 on Rolling Stone Magazine‘s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
The Beatles remained at the top spot with “Hello Goodbye”, #1 for a third week.  In just four years, the group had spent 40 weeks at #1 with 15 #1 songs.  John Fred & His Playboy Band made their move with “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)”.  The Monkees’ former #1 smash “Daydream Believer” was third, followed by Twin Falls, Idaho’s Gary Puckett & the Union Gap with “Woman, Woman” and Gladys Knight & the Pips with “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Aretha Franklin’s “Chain Of Fools”, the American Breed moved to #7 with “Bend Me, Shape Me”, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles slid to #8 with “I Second That Emotion”, the Lemon Pipers had the #9 song with “Green Tambourine” and Joe Tex was at #10 “Skinny Legs And All”.
Elvis Presley begins a ten day recording session that will produce his final US number one record, “Suspicious Minds”. The tracks are laid down at American Sound Studios in Memphis and mark the first time The King has recorded in his hometown since his Sun Records days in 1956.
Producer Chips Moman and the searing band of musicians he had assembled at American Sound Studios were waiting for the arrival of Elvis Presley and his notorious retinue.
It would be the first evening of a scheduled ten-day recording venture.

The welcome by the band was a bit skeptic; they didn’t know what to expect from Elvis. But with the first song, Long Black Limousine, which Elvis turned into an impassioned soul shout, they were convinced.
The session went on till 5.00 a.m. although Elvis had a bad cold. There were 3 songs completed, including Wearin’ That Loved On Look.

Back in Los Angeles, Elvis obtained more firearms as well as 22 additional TCB pendants.
Elvis began with the rehearsals for the upcoming Las Vegas engagement at RCA Studio C on Sunset at 7.00 p.m. He worked with the rhythm section for 6 hours on both this and the following night and even for 3 hours in the weekend.

 Elton John had his fourth Top 10 song with “Crocodile Rock”, which moved from 13-9.
Carole King rose to #1 on the Adult chart with “Been To Canaan”.
Carly Simon had the new #1 album with No Secrets as the long-running #1 Seventh Sojourn by the Moody Blues was now second.  Stanley, Idaho’s Carole King dropped to 3 with Rhymes & Reasons while One Man Dog by James Taylor came in fourth.

Elvis Presley‘s version of Paul Anka’s “My Way” goes Gold five months after the King’s death.

Elvis had included the song in the 1973 Aloha concert and sang it many times in concert, in the defiant spirit intended by writer Paul Anka (Canadian), and sometime in 1974, Elvis started singing it in defeat.

this single was taken from the 1977 Elvis in Concert TV – his last special and final shows.

“My Way” it reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in late-1977/early-1978 (higher than Frank Sinatra’s peak position), number 6 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and went Gold for its successful sales of over half a million copies. The following year the single reached number 2 on the Billboard Country singles chart but went all the way to number 1 on the rival Cash Box Country Singles chart. In the UK, it reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart.

The Young Men’s Christian Association files a lawsuit against Village People over their song, “Y.M.C.A.” The suit was eventually dropped.

The Bee Gees ruled again with “Too Much Heaven”, but former #1 “Le Freak” by Chic was making another bid for the top.  Billy Joel sat at #3 with “My Life” while Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond’s former #1 “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” was fourth.  Toto’s first hit “Hold The Line” moved nicely up to #5.

Soul pop singer Donny Hathaway died after jumping, (or falling) from a 15th floor hotel room in New York City at the age of 34.

1980

The Beach Boys, Jefferson Starship and Grateful Dead played a benefit concert for the people of Kampuchea.

BBC Radio 1 announced a ban on ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, after DJ Mike Read called it ‘obscene’, a BBC TV ban also followed. The song went on to become a UK No.1 and spent a total of 48 weeks on the UK chart.

New Kids On The Block had their second and last No.1 UK single with ‘Hangin’ Tough.’ They had a further 7 Top 10 hits by the end of 1991. They broke up after that, but set the scene for numerous boy bands throughout the 90s.

“Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson moved into the #1 position on the R&B chart.

Phil Collins remained #1 well into the New Year with a fourth week at the top for “Another Day In Paradise”.  “Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson continued to be just off the pace while Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” was third.  Michael Bolton moved up with “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” and the former #1 “Don’t Know Much” from Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville was fifth.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Everything” from Jody Watley, New Kids on the Block continued to be satisfied with #7 with “This One’s For The Children”, Cher held on to 8 with “Just Like Jesse James”, Taylor Dayne fell to #9 with “Every Beat of My Heart” and Lou Gramm, lead singer of Foreigner, had a Top 10 solo hit with “Just Between You And Me”.

1993

Bobby Brown was arrested in Augusta, GA, for simulating a sex act onstage. It was the second time that he had been arrested by the Augusta police department for the same offense

1996

Daydream by Mariah Carey was the top album for a sixth week.

Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men were a dominant #1 for a seventh week with “One Sweet Day”.  Counting her solo #1 “Fantasy”, Carey had been at #1 for 16 out of the last 17 weeks.  Everything But the Girl finally landed in the Top 10 after 23 weeks of release with “Missing”.

1998

Kevin Dubrow (Quiot Riot) was released from jail. He was arrested for failing to pay a judgment against him for an incident at a 1994 concert. A woman claimed that he threw another fan on top of her breaking her leg.

2000

Christina Aguilera had the #1 song–“What A Girl Wants”.

2001

TV Guide issued a set of 4 commemorative Elvis Presley covers.

The Who‘s guitarist, Pete Townshend was arrested on suspicion of child porn offences. Police officers impounded seven computers from his home in Richmond, South West London. After a four-month investigation, London’s Metropolitan Police would announce that Townshend “was not in possession of any downloaded child abuse images” but had accessed a site containing such images. Townshend himself acknowledged using his credit card to enter a web site advertising child pornography, but said he was doing research for his autobiography. Although he was not charged with any offence, Townshend was placed on a national sex offender registry for five years.

2004

The National Football League denied a request from Bono’s U2 to perform “An American Prayer” with Jennifer Lopez during the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show.  Bono had hoped to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa with the performance.  The NFL’s answer:  “We don’t believe it’s appropriate to focus on a single issue.”

2005

Ricky Martin toured the island of Phuket off of Thailand that had been struck by a tsunami.  Martin was there to draw attention to child slave gangs preying on children left orphaned by the disaster.

A report showed that more songs had been written about Elvis Presley than any other artist. It listed over 220 songs including: ‘Graceland’ by Paul Simon, ‘A Room At The Heartbreak hotel’ by U2, ‘Calling Elvis’, Dire Straits, ‘Happy Birthday Elvis’, Loudon Wainwright III, ‘There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis’, Kirsty MacColl, ‘I Saw Elvis in a UFO’, Ray Stevens. ‘Elvis Has Left the Building’ by Frank Zappa and ‘My Dog Thinks I’m Elvis’ by Ray Herndon.

Teddy Pendergrass died of colon cancer at the age of 59.  Teddy had been a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down, since a car accident in Philadelphia in 1982.  The American Soul singer first rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead vocalist for Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes before enjoying a successful solo career at the end of the decade.

2011

Just two months after The Beatles back catalogue became available on iTunes, their sales figures topped 5 million songs according to Hudson Square Research. During that period, the legendary group also moved more than a million full-length albums.

2016

Representatives for Barry Manilow were quick to dismiss rumors that the 72-year-old singer had been airlifted to Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Medical Center after suffering a heart attack. A statement to the press said: “It is indeed an established fact that Mr. Manilow does have atrial fibrillation, but he has never had a heart attack nor is this a concern.”

The Rolling Stones‘ first manager, Giorgio Gomelsky, passed away at the age of 82. After he was replaced by Andrew Loog Oldham in May, 1963, Gomelsky went on to manage The Yardbirds, Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger before moving to New York in 1978 and opening The Green Door nightclub. Those who knew him said that he never quite got over losing his job as The Stones’ manager.

One-time Beatles associate Yanni “John” Alexis Mardas, better known as “Magic Alex”, died of natural causes at the age of 74. After meeting at the Indica Gallery in London, John Lennon became fascinated with Mardas’ “Nothing Box”, a blinking light box that stimulated his LSD trips. Mardas was recruited into the Beatles’ inner circle and soon became the head of Apple Electronics. He parted ways with Apple after Allen Klein was brought in to straighten out the cash hemorrhaging company.
