American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis released Kind of Blue which is regarded by many critics as jazz’s greatest record, Davis’s masterpiece, and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to also deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded.
Brook Benton remained at #1 on the R&B chart with “Thank You Pretty Baby”.
Elvis Presley made history when he had the #1 song for the second straight week with “A Big Hunk O’ Love”. Elvis had long ago easily set the record for most weeks at #1 and no one knew it at the time, but this second week at #1 with “A Big Hunk O’ Love” is that one that gave him 60 total weeks at the top in his career, one more than the Beatles would register in their amazing career. Presley would end up with 80.
Although filming started for location shots for G.I. Blues, Elvis was forbidden to take part in the shooting. Elvis was visited in Bad Neuheim by Hal Wallis.

The Beatles began their first Hamburg engagement at the Indra Club, Grosse Freiheit, Hamburg, West Germany, playing the first of 48 nights at the Club. The owner, Bruno Koschmider, asked The Beatles to “Mach Shau”, or really put on a show, which led to the band screaming, shouting, and leaping about the stage and sometimes playing lying on the floor. John Lennon once appeared wearing only his underwear and on another occasion, wearing a toilet seat around his neck. The Beatles lodged in a single room behind the screen of a nearby movie house.

During a press conference in Toronto where The Beatles were scheduled to play that night, the group created more controversy by siding with American “draft dodgers” who chose to move to Toronto instead of staying in the U.S. where they could be drafted into the military to fight in Vietnam.
The Beatles gave two performances at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on their final concert tour. The first show at 4 p.m. drew 15,000, while 17,000 saw the evening show at 8 p.m. The McCoys, Bobby Hebb, the Cyrkle, and the Ronettes opened for the Fab Four.

The Doors started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Waiting For The Sun. The group’s third album spawned their second US No.1 single, ‘Hello, I Love You’. After charges of plagiarism, UK courts would rule that the tune was lifted from The Kinks‘ “All Day and All of the Night” and British royalties would go to Ray Davies.
“People Got To Be Free”, the powerful song from the Rascals, moved from 5 to 1 on this date. That meant the Doors had to relinquish their spot with “Hello, I Love You” and Mason Williams dropped as well with “Classical Gas” after peaking at #2. A rock classic made its move–Steppenwolf from 11 to 4 with “Born To Be Wild” and Jose Feliciano’s remake of “Light My Fire” moved from 20 to 5. The rest of the Top 10: “Stoned Soul Picnic” by the 5th Dimension, the Vogues had song #7–“Turn Around, Look At Me”, Cream edged up with “Sunshine Of Your Love”, Hugh Masekela’s instrumental “Grazing In The Grass” was #9 and Donovan slid down with “Hurdy Gurdy Man”.
Wheels of Fire by Cream was the top album for a second week. Time Peace/The Rascals’ Greatest Hits moved to #2 followed by Aretha Now from Aretha Franklin. The Soundtrack to “The Graduate” by Simon & Garfunkel fell to #4 while The Beat of the Brass from Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass was #5. Williams had left the Temps in 1971 because of poor health, although he continued to supervise their choreography. Eric Clapton started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 461 Ocean Boulevard, a No.3 hit in the UK. The house featured on the album cover is 461 Ocean Boulevard in the town of Golden Beach, Florida near Miami where Clapton lived while making the album.
The Rolling Stones moved from 79 to 34 with “It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll (But I Like It)”.
Nottingham England’s Paper Lace had Billboard’s top tune with a song about a gangster shootout called “The Night Chicago Died”. After the song became a hit, the band’s manager contacted Chicago’s mayor Richard Daley, hoping for a civic reception. What they got instead was ‘a rather rude letter’, ending in …are you nuts?’ Adding to the band’s woes, they were forbidden to perform the song ‘live’ in America at the height of its popularity because of contract issues.
Paper Lace rose to the final rung on the chart with “The Night Chicago Died”. Roberta Flack swapped places with her hit “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, Paul Anka was up 10 with “(You’re) Having My Baby” and Rufus was up big (10-4) with “Tell Me Something Good”. The rest of the Top 10: Dave Loggins with “Please Come To Boston”, Chicago’s “Call On Me” was #6, ABBA remained at 7 with “Waterloo”, Jim Stafford’s “Wildwood Weed” was at 8, Donny & Marie Osmond entered the Top 10 with “I’m Leaving It All Up To You” and Blue Magic was at #10 with “Sideshow”.

Although initial issues only sold about 50 copies, circulation soon increased to 15,000. U.S. President Jimmy Carter issued a statement saying, in part, “Elvis Presley’s death deprives our country of a part of itself. He was unique and irreplaceable. More than 20 years ago, he burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equaled. His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. Florists Transworld Delivery (FTD) reported that the number of orders in one day for flowers to be delivered to Graceland had surpassed the total for any other event in the company’s history.

John Lennon and Bob Dylan starred in the PBS documentary Eat the Document. Footage of Dylan’s 1966 tour in the U.K. was originally slated to air on ABC-TV, but the network rejected the cut. Gary Chester, member of the Coasters and a session drummer, died of cancer at the age of 62. Chester played on songs such as “It’s My Party”, “Under The Boardwalk”, “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Walk On By”.

Wild at Heart is released in North America – Nicolas Cage does his best Elvis.

Nirvana shot the video for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ at GMT Studios in Culver City, California, costing less than $50,000 to make, the shoot features real Nirvana fans as the audience. The video won Nirvana the Best New Artist and Best Alternative Group awards at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, and in 2000 the Guinness World Records named ‘Teen Spirit’ the Most Played Video on MTV Europe.

Despite once being listed in the Guinness Book as the world’s highest paid entertainer, Wayne Newton files for bankruptcy, claiming he owes $20 million.

Police in Los Angeles began an inquiry into child abuse allegations against Michael Jackson. The investigation began after the son of a Beverly Hills dentist told his therapist that Jackson sexually abused him. Jackson’s security staff claimed the allegations followed a failed attempt to blackmail the singer for 20 million dollars. Although no criminal charges were ever laid, lawyers for the 13 year-old filed a civil suit a month later claiming damages for sexual battery, seduction and other allegations. The suit was settled out of court in January 1994 for somewhere between $5 to $24 million.

The rights to the Rolling Stones’ 1981 hit “Start Me Up” were purchased by Microsoft to use as the theme for their upcoming Windows 95 ad campaign.
Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode attempted suicide at a hotel on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. He was hospitalized and recovered.

1999
Led Zeppelin topped a chart of Britain’s most bootlegged musicians, compiled by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), after identifying 384 bootleg titles featuring Led Zeppelin performances. The bootleg chart was complied from the BPI’s archive of some 10,000 recordings seized over the past 25 years. The Beatles came in second with 320 entries, other acts listed included The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd.

A report showed how touts were now using eBay to sell tickets for sold-out concerts. It said the touts were not breaking the law by using auction sites on the internet, it showed tickets for Madonna’s Wembley gig worth £150 were for sale at £350 and a pair of tickets to see The White Stripes worth £90 were currently on eBay for £130.
After thirteen years, General Motors stopped using Bob Seger‘s “Like A Rock” in their ads for the Chevy Silverado pickup. Seger would tell The New York Times that the song was actually inspired by the end of a long term relationship.

The Jerry Schilling book “Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley” was released.
2008
Jackson Browne was suing US Republican presidential candidate John McCain for using one of his songs without permission. Browne claimed the use of his song Running on Empty in an advert was an infringement of copyright and would lead people to conclude he endorses McCain. Browne was seeking more than $75,000 (£40,000) in damages.

A US court refused to allow music producer Phil Spector to appeal his 2009 murder conviction. The 71-year-old was jailed for 19 years for shooting actress Lana Clarkson at his California home in 2003.

Three members of the Russian feminist punk rock protest group Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years imprisonment after they had staged a performance on the soleas of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in a protest directed at the Orthodox Church leader’s support for President Putin during his election campaign.

The Universal Music Group announced that Paul McCartney had signed a new world-wide recording agreement with Capitol Records, bringing his entire catalog of master recordings with him.

40 years after his death, Elvis Presley held down the #2 spot on the UK’s Official Albums Chart with “50 Greatest Hits”. It was his 52nd UK Top Ten album. Glen Campbell‘s final studio LP, “Adios” came in at #3 a week after he passed away.
The Elvis Candlelight Vigil 2017 drew an estimated crowd of 50,000 to 60,000 people last night to Graceland, about 15,000 fewer than five years ago.
