After UK radio stations started playing copies of Elvis Presley’s “All Shook Up” which were intended for US servicemen, the tune debuts at #24, a week before its official release date.

The first teenage all-music TV show Oh Boy!, was broadcast for the first time in the UK. Each week Oh Boy! featured resident artists plus a selection of special guests. The residents included Cuddly Dudley, who sang on 21 shows, Cliff Richard (20 shows), The Drifters (Later to become The Shadows) (17 shows) and Marty Wilde (17 shows). Guests included Billy Fury, Tony Sheridan, Shirley Bassey and Lonnie Donegan; with occasional US stars, such as The Inkspots, Conway Twitty and Brenda Lee.

The Platters sang “Twilight Time” during their only appearance on CBS-TV’s  “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Benny Goodman, William Holden and the London Philharmonic also performed on the program

21 year old Kyu Sakamoto became the first Japanese artist to hit the top of the US singles chart with a song called “Sukiyaki”. It was also a #6 hit in the UK. (and was also a No.10 UK single for Kenny Ball in the same year) The original title of the song was “Ue O Muite Aruko”, which translates “I Look Up When I Walk”. Sakamoto was killed on August 12th, 1985 when JAL Flight 123, a Boeing 747, crashed and burned on a thickly wooded mountain about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. He was 43.

Kyu Sakamoto moved to #1 with “Sukiyaki”.  Three songs entered the Top 10 Songs Club of the Rock Era–“Blue On Blue” from Bobby Vinton, “Hello Stranger” by Barbara Lewis and “18 Yellow Roses” by Bobby Darin.

Jan And Dean‘s “Surf City” is released. The song featured Brian Wilson on backing vocals and would prove to be the duo’s only US number 1 record.

Elvis and The Col sent Frank Sinatra a telegram: “Dear Frank, Happy Father’s Day, enough said? Elvis and The Colonel.”

Ringo Starr re-joins The Beatles in Melbourne, Australia after being released from a London hospital where he was treated for tonsillitis and pharyngitis. In his absence, drummer Jimmie Nicol, formerly of Georgie Fame And The Blue Flames, filled in admirably.

Peter & Gordon arrived in the U.S. to perform in New York at the World’s Fair.

Elvis returned to Radio Recorders from 2.00 to 6.00 p.m. to complete vocal tracks for Girl Happy. It would take another 8 months before he went in a recording studio again.

Jody Miller‘s Country crossover tune “Queen Of The House” enters the Billboard Top 40 on its way to #12. It was an answer song to Roger Miller’s “King Of The Road” and many American DJ’s played the two records back-to-back. Although the pair shared the same last name, they are not related.

In New York, Bob Dylan began a two-day recording session that produced his classic “Like A Rolling Stone.” The fourth of 15 takes on the second day was the version released as the single.

The EP “Tickle Me” shipped and peaked at #70 on the Hot 100.

The Beatles L.P., “Yesterday and Today” is released by Capitol with the controversial “butcher” cover, with the Beatles smiling amongst a group of decapitated baby dolls. The original photo became a huge publicity problem for Capitol and was quickly replaced by a more conventional jacket.

“Hee Haw” with Roy Clark and Buck Owens began its 25-season run on TV, first as a summer replacement for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” on CBS. Elvis’ girlfriend Linda Thompson became part of the cast before Elvis died, he didn’t live to see her on it. Vernon Presley made an appearance – Hee Haw and other southern culture programs was cancelled in the Silverman Sweep of tv, before the three networks had speciality networks to compete with; all of which was rendered meaningless with the eventual merger of tv and internet.

Elvis was admitted to the Mid-South Hospital for 2 days for what the press reported as ‘an extensive eye examination’ but what is in fact cosmetic surgery around his eyes. Both Dr. Nick and the plastic surgeon try to talk him out of it, but Elvis insisted – he had convinced George Klein to do it ahead of himself.

Unknown Pleasures, the debut long-player from British post-punk band Joy Division, is released. Although it does not chart, it becomes hugely influential and is widely critically acclaimed as one of the defining albums of the post-punk era.

A song called “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which went to #1 in England for Gerry And The Pacemakers in 1963, topped the UK chart again as performed by The Crowd, featuring Gerry Marsden, Paul McCartney and Rolf Harris, among others. It was originally a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers And Hammerstein musical, Carousel and has since been adopted by football clubs around the world, and is often performed by a massed chorus of supporters on match day. Elvis was one of many artists who also recorded it.

1989

Actor Victor French (Highway to Heaven, Carter Country, Little House on the Prairie, Get Smart, An Officer and a Gentleman, The Magnificent Seven, Rio Lobo, Charro!, The Quick and the Dead, Chato’s Land)/television director (Highway to Heaven, Little House on the Prairie, Gunsmoke) died of lung cancer at 54.

The Rolling Stones song, “Paint It Black”, hit number 1 in the Netherlands for the second time, twenty-four years after it first topped their chart. The song was included on the Stones’ “Singles Collection” box set the previous year.

“Power Of Love/Love Power” by Luther Vandross topped all on the R&B chart.

Paula Abdul hits #1 in America with the ballad “Rush, Rush,” her fifth chart-topper. A young Keanu Reeves is in the video.

“Motownphilly” debuted on the singles chart and would eventually reach #3 and be certified as a Platinum single (over 2 million copies sold)–Boyz II Men… This single would be followed by eight Top Three songs over the next five years

1993

Ray Charles made music history when his album “My World” showed up on Billboard’s Hot 200, marking the sixth decade he had a charted LP.

“Paul McCartney Live In The New World,” his first live televised concert, aired in the U.S. on Fox-TV.

1994

The television special “The Lion King: A Musical Journey With Elton John” was shown on ABC the same day that Disney’s 32ndanimated feature film “The Lion King” opened in select U.S. cities.

The Disney film The Lion King hits theaters. A runaway hit, the movie takes in over $300 million in 1994, second only to Forrest Gump. The soundtrack goes Diamond, meaning over 10 million copies sold – a record for the soundtrack to an animated film.

US jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald died in Beverly Hills, California, aged 79. Already blinded by the effects of diabetes, Fitzgerald had both her legs amputated in 1993. Winner of 13 Grammy Awards, the 1956 ‘Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook’ was the first of eight “Songbook” sets. Appeared in the TV commercial for Memorex, where she sang a note that shattered a glass while being recorded on a Memorex cassette tape. The tape was played back and the recording also broke the glass, asking “Is it live, or is it Memorex”

The Beastie Boys host the first Tibetan Freedom Concert, with performers that include Sonic YouthSmashing Pumpkins and John Lee Hooker. About 100,000 attend the two shows, raising money for the Milarepa Fund.

A judge in Mississippi approved a divorce settlement between Jerry Lee Lewis and his sixth wife, Kerrie Lynn McCarver Lewis. She would receive $250,000 immediately and $30,000 a year for five years.

2008

Liverpool was voted England’s most musical city in a national campaign set up by the Arts Council. The home of The Beatles Frankie Goes To Hollywood, OMD and The Zutons took 49% of the vote in an online poll set up by the funding body. Sheffield – which brought the world the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp – came second, while Manchester with Oasis, Stone Roses and The Smiths came third.

2010

A case against a man accused of threatening Elton John’s life was withdrawn just hours before his trial was due to begin. Neal Horsley had responded to Elton’s suggestion that Jesus Christ was gay in a Parade magazine interview by writing an angry online response entitled “Why Elton John Must Die”. After being held in an Atlanta, Georgia jail since last March, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams dismissed the case against Horsley because his actions did not warrant criminal charges.

2011

Nearly 150 people, including nine police officers, were injured during a riot on the streets of Vancouver, British Columbia following the hometeam Canucks’ loss to the Boston Bruins in the seventh and deciding game of the Stanley Cup hockey finals. Damage was in the tens of millions of dollars.

Sly Stone, the 68-year-old former frontman of Sly And The Family Stone, pleaded not guilty to possession of cocaine after being pulled over for a minor traffic violation by L.A. Police on April 1st. He would enter a rehab facility the following October.

2012

Nik Wallenda became the first person to make a successful high-wire walk directly over Niagara Falls.

The conservative radio and TV personality Glenn Beck announces plans for launching a competitor to the popular TV series Glee, which revolves around a high school glee club with many musical numbers. Beck, incensed at the show’s liberal portrayal of issues such as homosexuality and bullying, tells a Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington that the left “won’t know what hit them” when he launches his own conservative version of the show. The show never materializes.

2013

A 24-year-old woman died in hospital after falling at the Stone Roses concert in Glasgow. The woman was among 50,000 fans who attended a gig at Glasgow Green to hear the Manchester indie band. Police also Police made a total of 24 arrests during and after the concert for anti-social and drugs offences.

2014

82-year-old Casey Kasem, the host of US radio shows like American Top 40 and Casey’s Countdown for nearly 40 years, died after battling Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1981 and was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 1985.

Led Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page denied stealing the riff to ‘Stairway To Heaven’ when he took the stand at a copyright trial in the US. The band were accused of lifting the opening guitar line from ‘Taurus’, a 1968 track by the band Spirit. Page testified that he had never heard the song until people started posting comparisons online a few years ago. Page admitted to owning several Spirit albums, but only remembered buying two of them, neither of which contained Taurus. Under questioning, he conceded that he did own a copy of the band’s self-titled debut, on which the track appears, but could not recall how it came to be part of his collection.
