Charles Manos of the Detroit Free Press gave a somewhat favorable review of the show the following day when he wrote, Elvis Presley, the rock-n-roll dreamboat, danced up a storm in Detroit Friday. Some 15,000 teenager, mostly girls, paid nearly $25,000 in small change to watch him sing, play the guitar and wiggle across the stage at the Fox Theater. His take-home pay for the three performances was estimated at $10,000.

Scotty and Bill were still only earning their $200 a week salary. By the time of their appearance back in Memphis, on July 4th at Russwood Park, Scotty would be behind in child support and have to refinance his guitar in an attempt to make ends meet.

Dave Davies of The Kinks falls and injures himself on stage in Cardiff, Wales, forcing cancellation of the group’s tour.
Blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter, Sonny Boy Williamson died in his sleep. Van Morrison, Aerosmith, The Who, The Animals, Yardbirds and Moody Blues all covered his songs. According to the Led Zeppelin biography Hammer of the Gods, touring the UK in the 60’s, Sonny Boy set his hotel room on fire while trying to cook a rabbit in a coffee percolator.

Elvis left for Nashville at 1.00 a.m. on a rented Greyhound. At Studio B Elvis met his new producer, Felton Jarvis. According to Chet Atkins, Felton’s temperament would suit Elvis better. Felton was already a big fan of Elvis.
This was the first time in more than 2 years that Elvis was in the studio to record something else than soundtracks.
He had to deliver 2 singles, a Christmas single and a gospel album. Elvis worked form 10.00 p.m. to 7.00 a.m. on this first night. He concentrated on the album How Great Thou Art, but recorded Tomorrow Is A Long Time from Bob Dylan as well.

Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ entered the UK chart for the first time, where it went on to become a No.1 hit. ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ became the most played song in the last 75 years in public places in the UK (as of 2009). The first video for the song was shot in the ruins of Witley Court in Worcestershire, England. Directed by Peter Clifton whose insertion of Vietnam War newsreel footage caused it to be banned from airplay on the Top Of The Pops TV show. The band subsequently made another video.

CBS-TV’s “The Ed Sullivan Show” Theodore Bikel, Louis Nye, and Ron Carey also appeared, Sam & Dave performed “Soul Man” and “I Thank You,” and Mary Hopkin sang “Goodbye”
The Who and Led Zeppelin appeared at the Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, USA. This was the only time the two group’s ever appeared together, with Zeppelin opening the show. On the tickets Led Zeppelin was spelt Lead Zeppelin.

Billboard implements SoundScan technology on their Albums chart, replacing the decades-old system that relied on record stores to report sales figures. With SoundScan, the sales are tracked electronically, providing much more accurate data.

A report showed that Elvis Presley was now the world’s bestselling posthumous entertainer with worldwide sales of over one billion, over 480 active fan clubs and an estimated 250,000 UK fans who still buy his records. Ironically he had died owing $3 million (£1.76 million).
Bob Dylan was diagnosed as suffering from histoplasmosis pericarditis, a fungal infection of the lung, and was admitted to hospital he stayed until June 2nd. Having just turned 56, Dylan later admitted: ‘I really thought I’d be seeing Elvis soon’. Treated by drugs and rest, Bob was back on the road only 10 weeks later, for 22 American and Canadian shows.

“Ramsey Lewis Week” is declared in Chicago to honor the Grammy Award-winning jazz composer.
2001
Lisa Marie Presley arrived with Nicolas Cage when he received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Cal State University Fullerton.

The mosh pit goes horribly wrong at an Eminem concert in Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium, and at least 25 people are injured.

Nineteen-year-old Avril Lavigne releases her second album, Under My Skin, with the hits “Don’t Tell Me” and “My Happy Ending.” It sells 3 million copies in America.
Madonna cancelled three shows in Israel after terrorists threatened to kill her and her kids. A spokesperson said she was targeted because she symbolises the West and not because she practises the Jewish faith Kabbalah.
In a letter to fans, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio says that after 21 years together, the band is splitting up. “We all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act.” They wrap things up with a show in Coventry, Vermont, in August, but it is not the final curtain: In 2009, the band reunites.
2005
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in California announced that it was officially closing the stabbing case of Meredith Hunter, the 18-year-old American who was killed at the 1969 Rolling Stones Altamont Free Concert. Investigators, concluding a renewed two-year investigation, dismissed the theory that a second Hell’s Angel took part in the stabbing.
On stage in front of 7,000 fans at the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California, country music singer Garth Brooks proposed to fellow singer Trisha Yearwood. They married in December 2005.
Carrie Underwood wins Season 4 of American Idol and becomes their most successful alum: Her debut album goes on to sell over 7 million copies.

Jet releases a YouTube video featuring their song “Shine On” that honors the life and work of Australian ophthalmologist Fred Hallows. It is estimated that Hallows’ work in Australia and other developing nations has helped bring eyesight to over one million people. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, lead singer Nic Chester said, “hopefully [the video] encourages people to make a donation to keep Fred’s work going.”

Two members of the Japanese girl group AKB48, along with a staff member, are attacked by a saw-wielding maniac during a meet-the-fans event. The victims are treated for cuts and fractures while the suspect is arrested for attempted murder.
