Charles Manos of the Detroit Free Press gave a somewhat favorable review of the show the following day when he wrote, Elvis Presley, the rock-n-roll dreamboat, danced up a storm in Detroit Friday. Some 15,000 teenager, mostly girls, paid nearly $25,000 in small change to watch him sing, play the guitar and wiggle across the stage at the Fox Theater. His take-home pay for the three performances was estimated at $10,000.

Scotty and Bill were still only earning their $200 a week salary. By the time of their appearance back in Memphis, on July 4th at Russwood Park, Scotty would be behind in child support and have to refinance his guitar in an attempt to make ends meet.

Blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter, Sonny Boy Williamson died in his sleep. Van Morrison, Aerosmith, The Who, The Animals, Yardbirds and Moody Blues all covered his songs. According to the Led Zeppelin biography Hammer of the Gods, touring the UK in the 60’s, Sonny Boy set his hotel room on fire while trying to cook a rabbit in a coffee percolator.

Elvis left for Nashville at 1.00 a.m. on a rented Greyhound. At Studio B Elvis met his new producer, Felton Jarvis. According to Chet Atkins, Felton’s temperament would suit Elvis better. Felton was already a big fan of Elvis.
This was the first time in more than 2 years that Elvis was in the studio to record something else than soundtracks.
He had to deliver 2 singles, a Christmas single and a gospel album. Elvis worked form 10.00 p.m. to 7.00 a.m. on this first night. He concentrated on the album How Great Thou Art, but recorded Tomorrow Is A Long Time from Bob Dylan as well.

Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ entered the UK chart for the first time, where it went on to become a No.1 hit. ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ became the most played song in the last 75 years in public places in the UK (as of 2009). The first video for the song was shot in the ruins of Witley Court in Worcestershire, England. Directed by Peter Clifton whose insertion of Vietnam War newsreel footage caused it to be banned from airplay on the Top Of The Pops TV show. The band subsequently made another video.

A report showed that Elvis Presley was now the world’s bestselling posthumous entertainer with worldwide sales of over one billion, over 480 active fan clubs and an estimated 250,000 UK fans who still buy his records. Ironically he had died owing $3 million (£1.76 million).
Bob Dylan was diagnosed as suffering from histoplasmosis pericarditis, a fungal infection of the lung, and was admitted to hospital he stayed until June 2nd. Having just turned 56, Dylan later admitted: ‘I really thought I’d be seeing Elvis soon’. Treated by drugs and rest, Bob was back on the road only 10 weeks later, for 22 American and Canadian shows.

In a letter to fans, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio says that after 21 years together, the band is splitting up. “We all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act.” They wrap things up with a show in Coventry, Vermont, in August, but it is not the final curtain: In 2009, the band reunites.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in California announced that it was officially closing the stabbing case of Meredith Hunter, the 18-year-old American who was killed at the 1969 Rolling Stones Altamont Free Concert. Investigators, concluding a renewed two-year investigation, dismissed the theory that a second Hell’s Angel took part in the stabbing.
On stage in front of 7,000 fans at the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California, country music singer Garth Brooks proposed to fellow singer Trisha Yearwood. They married in December 2005.

Jet releases a YouTube video featuring their song “Shine On” that honors the life and work of Australian ophthalmologist Fred Hallows. It is estimated that Hallows’ work in Australia and other developing nations has helped bring eyesight to over one million people.
