At the gates of Fort Hood, the Colonel and Anita Wood, at 6.00 a.m, picked up Elvis, Rex Mansfield and William Norvell for a well deserved two week leave. Elvis arrived home at Graceland late in the evening.

The Beatles played the last night of a 7-week run at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. During their residency they would play for four-and-a-half hours on weekdays and six hours on Saturdays, with some songs lasting over 20 minutes to fill out the time.

Filming began on The Monkees first TV series. The Monkees’ first single, ‘Last Train to Clarksville’ was released in August 1966, just weeks prior to the TV broadcast debut. In conjunction with the first broadcast of the television show on September 12, 1966 on the NBC television network, NBC and Columbia had a major hit on their hands.

Working on what will become The White Album, The Beatles added overdubs of bass and vocals on ‘Revolution’. After numerous overdubs have been added, the final six minutes of the song evolved into chaotic, jamming, with Lennon repeatedly shouting “alright” and Yoko Ono speaking random phrases. The jam becomes the basis for ‘Revolution 9’, and this session is the first that Yoko attends.

The Who gave themselves a place in the Guinness book of Records as the loudest performance of a rock band at 120 decibels, when they played at Charlton Athletic Football ground. The record stood for nearly a decade. AC/DC and Manowar are among several bands that have claimed to hold the record since the Who, however Guinness no longer includes a category of loudest band, reportedly because they did not want to encourage hearing loss.
The BBC announced a ban on the new Sex Pistols single ‘God Save The Queen’ saying it’s, “in gross bad taste”. And the IBA issued a warning to all radio stations saying the playing the single would be in breach of Section 4:1:A of the Broadcasting act. The single reached No.2 on the UK chart.

In the U.K., the Sex Pistols single “God Save the Queen” was banned by the BBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority. Shops and pressing plant workers refused to handle the record, partly owing to the cover of Queen Elizabeth with a safety pin in her lip, but it still managed to reach #2 on the UK chart.
The musical “Beatlemania,” starring Leslie Fradkin, Justin McNeill, and Joe Pecorino, with disc jockey Murray the K as a special consultant, opened at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre for 920 performances.
In England and Australia, the yet-to-be published tell-all book by Elvis Presley’s bodyguards Sonny and Red West, titled “Elvis: What Happened?” began to leak out a chapter at a time to local newspapers.

A dental crown worn by Elvis Presley went astray during a tour to raise awareness of mouth cancer, leaving members of a dental practice “all shook up”.
“The King’s Crown” was due to arrive at Bracknell’s Appledore Dental Clinic early on Thursday, but arrived more than five hours late after a labelling mix-up by FedEx, the practice claimed.
It was located on its way to Dundee before being redirected.

A report, from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota said Prince died from an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl. According to the autopsy report, Prince self-administered fentanyl, an opioid many times more powerful than heroin.
