Bill Haley tries to follow his #22 hit, “Skinny Minnie” with a musically and thematically almost identical song called “Lean Jean”. Unfortunately, the record buying public wasn’t as interested and the tune peaks at #67 during its one week stay on the Billboard Top 100.

The Beatles held a press conference at the Astor Towers Hotel in Chicago where John Lennon apologized for his remarks published in the London Evening Standard that said The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus now.” After US media brought the story to light, rallies were held all over the country to smash and burn Beatle records. Lennon said later that he was trying to say, “The way they (some fans) carry on, it’s like we’re more popular than Jesus Christ.” Maureen Cleave, the journalist who interviewed Lennon for the original article, tried to come to John’s rescue by saying, “John was certainly not comparing the Beatles to Christ. He was simply observing that, so weak was the state of Christianity, the Beatles was, to many people, better known.”

John explained, “If I had said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it, but I just happened to be talking to a friend and I used the words “Beatles” as a remote thing, not as what I think – as Beatles, as those other Beatles like other people see us … I’m not saying that we’re better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it’s all this … I never meant it to be a lousy anti-religious thing. I apologize if that will make you happy. I still don’t know quite what I’ve done. I’ve tried to tell you what I did do but if you want me to apologize, if that will make you happy, then okay, I’m sorry.”

The Hollywood Decade/The Elvis Establishment

In New York City, Sam Cooke began a week of shows at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. His supporting acts were Little Anthony and the Imperials and Aretha Franklin.
With Wild in the Country filming once again completed, Elvis had returned to Memphis, where he hold a rehearsal with Scotty, DJ, the Nashville session players and the Jordanaires at Graceland for his Memphis charity show.

Elvis’ 10th UK chart topper with “Can’t Help Falling In Love” / “Rock-A-Hula Baby”.

A double A-sided release with “Can’t Help Falling in Love“, it peaked at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1962, and spent four weeks at the chart summit.

“Can’t Help Falling In Love” would become Elvis’ signature concert good bye song in the 1970s.

In Richmond, Surrey, the Rolling Stones began performing on Sunday nights in the Crawdaddy Room of the Station Hotel, their first steady engagement. They were paid approximately $41 (US) and only 66 people showed up for the first performance.

Fun in Acapulco

February 24, 1964

The Beatles began filming their second, as yet un-named movie, on New Providence in the Bahamas. Director Richard Lester filmed them riding bicycles near the airport. The film would first be called Eight Arms to Hold You before producers finally settled on Help!. Co-starring in the movie was actor Victor Spinetti, who would also appeared in A Hard Day’s Night, Magical Mystery Tour and John Lennon’s How I Won The War.
At Universal and Radio Recorders studios in Hollywood, a month after they recorded “Help Me, Ronda” for issue on an album, the Beach Boys re-recorded the song for release as a single. For the first time, other than on their Christmas album, guitarist Al Jardine sang lead. The Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew provided much of the instrumentation, along with Carl Wilson on guitar and Brian Wilson on acoustic piano and Hammond B-3 organ. Backing vocals were by Mike Love, Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson.

At the last minute there was a soundtrack session set up for Elvis’ new film, Harum Scarum. Due to the hurried manner in which the session was scheduled, Elvis’ regular accompanists were not available ant their places were taken by Charlie McCoy on guitar, Henry Strzelecki on bass and Kenny Buttrey on drums. They were joined by Rufus Long and Ralph Strobel on flute and oboe in order to lend A middle Eastern touch to the soundtrack.
This was Elvis’ first visit to a recording studio in 8 months and his distraction and disaffection with the material was obvious. He broke off at 3.30 a.m. after only 4 hours in which he did 38 dreary takes of Shake That Tambourine.
