Elvis Presley and Mary Kathleen Selph  at the corner of South Parkway and Elvis Presley Blvd. in Memphis, Tennessee June 30, 1972. ID on Mary Kathleen Selph from her mother, Peggy Selph Cannon on Jan 5, 2000. Mrs. Cannon says her daughter was killed in an auto accident on July 18, 1972 at the age of 20.

Cannon says her daughter, Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Selph, then 20, was being driven home by Elvis when the picture was shot by a photographer for The Commercial Appeal in June 1972. A neighbor showed her the photograph in the newspaper that week, and Cannon says she ‘reprimanded’ her daughter for dating a married man. That’s when she learned that Elvis and Priscilla Presley had separated.

The daughter, who had moved out of her parents’ home, had been working as a dancer and singer at the old Whirlaway Club, where a member of Elvis’ Memphis Mafia noticed she resembled Priscilla Presley, says Selph’s brother, Steve. His sister and Elvis were introduced and dated for a while, he says.

“The film? (Change of Habit) … it’s a change of pace for me, yeah. It’s more serious than my usual movies, but it don’t mean I’m aiming for a big dramatic acting scene, no sir. The way I’m headed, I want to try something different now, but not too different. I did this film because the script was good, and I guess I know by now what the public goes for. Most of the scripts that come my way are all the same. They’ve all got a load of songs in them, but I just did a western called ‘Charro!’ which hasn’t any songs ‘cepting the title tune. It did have a couple of nude scenes, but they’ve been cut. Anyhow, can you imagine a dramatic western where the hero breaks into song all the time?” — San Francisco Chronicle, June 8, 1969.

Variety’s review of May 28, 1958, gave Presley measured praise for his acting work.

“Hal Wallis has attempted to take the curse off Elvis Presley, for those still resistant to his charms, by giving him an extraordinary backing in ‘King Creole,’ a solid melodrama with plenty of action and color. The Paramount presentation shows the young singer this time as a better-than-fair actor … In all fairness, Presley does show himself to be a surprisingly sympathetic and believable actor on occasion.”

In 2005, the recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.” It was also the first song to be recorded by The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became The Beatles.

Virgin Records releases the anti-establishment anthem “God Save The Queen” by The Sex Pistols. UK sales will reach over 150,000 in the first five days, despite the fact that major retailers refuse to sell the record and the BBC bans it from air-play. Against all odds, the single still reached #2 on the UK singles chart. It sold 200,000 copies in one week and peaked at No.2 on the UK charts behind Rod Stewart’s ‘I Don’t Want to Talk About It’. There have been persistent rumours, (never confirmed or denied), that it was actually the biggest-selling single in the UK at the time, and the British Phonographic Industry conspired to keep it off the No.1 slot.

Elvis performed at the Municipal Auditorium Arena, Kansas City, Missouri. However, there was a big riot and DJ’s drums and Bill’s bass were smashed, while DJ himself was thrown into the orchestra pit.

Elvis flew to the next gig with Gene Smith and Tom Diskin while the band drove again.

Elvis Presley Letters from Omaha in 1956 – Elvis History Blog

Marjorie Howe’s concert review, published in theJournal on May 24, 1956. The headline read, “Teenagers Like Presley’s Antics—But Others Do Not!” Miss Howe clearly was in the latter group. “His performance was the most disgusting exhibition this reporter has ever seen,” she declared. “Elvis Presley is the male counterpart of a hoochee-koochee dancer in a burlesque show. The writhing goes on while Presley is singing Blue Suede Shoes or Hound Dog, but his frenzied singing and guitar strumming are only incidental to the act. In fact, the singing can barely be heard above the crowd noise for every paroxysm brings a fresh outbreak of shrieks from the audience.”

Howe took time off from her criticism of Elvis’s act to censure the singer’s appearance. “He has a sulkey look and his infrequent smile is almost surly,” she observed. She added (Elvis fans, take a deep breath now), “He wears long sideburns and is beginning to get fat.”
