Elvis Presley’s single “A Big Hunk O’ Love” hit #1 in the U.S. written by Aaron Schroeder and Sid Wyche, who also wrote “It’s Now or Never” and “Good Luck Charm”; both of which – like “A Big Hunk o’ Love” – were originally recorded by American rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. “A Big Hunk o’ Love” was released as a single on June 23, 1959[1] by RCA Victor and later topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks.

The a-side spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while the b-side peaked at #12.[2] The single was less successful on the Cashbox Top 100 with the a-side peaking at #2 and the b-side at #23.[4] On the UK Singles Chart the a-side peaked at #4, while the b-side did not appear on the chart.[5] The a-side also peaked at #10 on Billboard magazine’s R&B Singles chart

The song was revived by Presley in 1972 during his engagements at the Las Vegas Hilton in February 1972 and was used in his live shows until mid-1973. It was performed live for the last time on January 26, 1974. The song is included in the 1972 documentary Elvis On Tour and his 1973 show broadcast via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. During this time period, it was played by the Elvis’ TCB Band, and featured Glen D. Hardin and James Burton.

“It’s Now or Never” was a number-one record in the U.S., spending five weeks at number one and the UK, where it spent eight weeks at the top in 1960 and an additional week at number one in 2005 as a re-issue, and numerous other countries, selling in excess of 25 million copies worldwide, Elvis Presley’s biggest international single ever. Its British release was delayed for some time because of rights issues, allowing the song to build up massive advance orders and to enter the UK Singles Chart at number one, a very rare occurrence at the time. “It’s Now or Never” peaked at number seven on the R&B charts

When Martin’s version pushed The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” out of the top spot on the Billboard chart, he sent telegrams to Elvis and to Frank Sinatra saying “I did it! I knocked ’em out of first place!”

The Elvis Religion

Elvis the new religion

I think that we are seeing a new religion emerging. Elvisism, Elvites, Presletarianism – something based around Elvis Presley.

The reason that I believe this is the many religious aspects of the Elvis story.

  • born in humble circumstances and poverty.
  • sole survivor of a twin birth that his father later claimed to recalling a strange light in the sky on the night of his birth
  • escaped death again at age 5 from a tornado that ripped through Tupelo.
  • He lived in Memphis along a mighty river and became known as The King, giving Pharaoh associations.
  • He recorded his first music on Sun Records – and most religions have sun gods, gods of light
  • He ushered in a great cultural change – broke racial barriers while heightening the generational gap and put overt sex at the cultural forefront
  • His personal image was one of racial tolerance, generosity/charity
  • The kisses, scarves and other items given out to the crowds during concerts is like having a blessing bestowed upon you
  • He was surrounded by a core group of disciples (Memphis Mafia) who have split into camps and written conflicting books after Elvis’ death
  • there are stories of him having visions, laying on hands healing,
  • there’s been after death sightings of him in person, or just his image appearing as people see Jesus, Virgin Mary,  and other religious figures in wood grain or mineral patterns, or on toasted bread products….
  • Elvis’ image is reproduced in religious type paintings
  • Impersonators or Tribute Artists are priests – even having special garments – Elvis’ stage wear and movie costumes.
  • people make pilgrimages to Graceland – especially for the winter holiday (Jan 8) and the end of summer (Aug 16) holidays – which is already a weeklong festival
  • The annual candlelight vigil are exhibiting a form of worship and ritual. As is the annual lighting of the Graceland holiday lights.
  • people have special areas in their homes of their Elvis collections, serving as altar areas or even rooms in their homes  which act as temples.

what other religious elements do you see in the Elvis story, that future generations will reinterpret?

This is one of the few legitimate forms of recognition that Elvis gets from the recording industry during his lifetime – but it is a highly significant one. Photo below, NARAS reps, Bing Crosby’s nephew, Chris with Elvis.

Journalist Bob Claypool wrote the often-quoted review about this concert for the Houston Post, in it he said…

Elvis Presley has been breaking hearts for more than 20 years now, and Saturday afternoon in the Summit – in a completely new and unexpected way – he broke mine.
In short, the concert was awful – a depressingly incoherent, amateurish mess served up by a bloated, stumbling and mumbling figure who didn’t act like “The King” of anything, least of all rock ‘n’ roll.”

A fanzine called Sniffin’ Glue, which chronicled of the early days of British Punk Rock, is first published in the UK. Although initial issues only sold about 50 copies, circulation soon increased to 15,000. More than 20 years ago, he burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equaled. His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. His following was immense and he was a symbol to people the world over, of the vitality, rebelliousness and good humor of his country.”

Give us this day, June 26, our daily Elvis

1909

Andreas Cornelis van Kuijkwas born in Holland, in America, he became Col Tom Parker and Elvis Presley’s manager. Before working in the music business Parker was an elected dog catcher in Florida where he invented pet cemeteries, he often claimed to have worked in the carnival circuit, and had previously managed country singer Eddy Arnold.  Parker was eventually sued by the Elvis Estate, which established Parker’s fees were out of industry standards and he revealed he was not an American, belling it would protect him from court action. He died on January 21st 1997 age 87 after he suffered a stroke.

Gary U.S. Bonds started a two-week run at No.1 on the US charts with ‘Quarter To Three’, a No.7 hit in the UK. Before Bonds recorded this, it was an instrumental by The Church Street Five called ‘A Night With Daddy G.’ Bond’s manager added lyrics to it and had him record it. This is often covered by Bruce Springsteen who is a big fan. In 1981, Springsteen produced a successful comeback album for Bonds.

The Beatles‘ “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” started a 23 week run at #1 on the UK album chart. The LP also topped the Billboard Hot 200 chart for 15 weeks, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and would eventually sell over 30 million copies world wide. Ringo Starr would later comment: “a bunch of songs and you stick two bits of ‘Pepper’ on it and it’s a concept album. It worked because we said it worked.”

After selling over 356,000 copies in the first three weeks after its release, “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” by Procol Harum tops the UK chart. The song would peak at #5 in the US near the end of July. In 2004, the United Kingdom performing rights group Phonographic Performance Limited recognized it as the most-played record by British broadcasting of the past 70 years. The same year, Rolling Stone placed “A Whiter Shade of Pale” at #57 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

At the RCA Studios in Hollywood, the Monkees began recording the Gerry Goffin-Carole King composition, “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Micky Dolenz sang lead and was the only Monkee who did not play an instrument on the recording. The track was completed the following day.

Jimi Hendrix was denied entry to London’s Botanical Gardens because “people in fancy dress aren’t allowed.”
