Comics Bill Buchanan and Dickie Goodman have the number three song in America with a novelty tune called “Flying Saucer”. The premise of the record was two radio news reporters who ask questions which are then humorously answered with snippets from mid-’50s hits. Buchanan and Goodman were sued by 17 different record companies for copyright infringement, but all were dismissed by a ruling that said the parodies did not infringe on the sales of the original records.

Tamla Records released the Marvelettes first single, ‘Please Mr. Postman’. The song went on to sell over a million copies and become the group’s biggest hit, reaching the top of both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts. The song is notable as the first Motown song to reach the No.1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart.

Patsy Cline recorded the classic Willie Nelson song, ‘Crazy’. Cline was still on crutches after going through a car windshield in a head-on collision two months earlier and had difficulty reaching the high notes of the song at first due to her broken ribs. ‘Crazy’ spent 21 weeks on the chart and eventually became one of her signature tunes.

Elvis Presley started a three-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Something For Everybody’ his sixth US No.1 album.

Elvis Presley’s single “A Big Hunk O’ Love” hit #1 in the U.S. written by Aaron Schroeder and Sid Wyche, who also wrote “It’s Now or Never” and “Good Luck Charm”; both of which – like “A Big Hunk o’ Love” – were originally recorded by American rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. “A Big Hunk o’ Love” was released as a single on June 23, 1959[1] by RCA Victor and later topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks.

The a-side spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while the b-side peaked at #12.[2] The single was less successful on the Cashbox Top 100 with the a-side peaking at #2 and the b-side at #23.[4] On the UK Singles Chart the a-side peaked at #4, while the b-side did not appear on the chart.[5] The a-side also peaked at #10 on Billboard magazine’s R&B Singles chart

The song was revived by Presley in 1972 during his engagements at the Las Vegas Hilton in February 1972 and was used in his live shows until mid-1973. It was performed live for the last time on January 26, 1974. The song is included in the 1972 documentary Elvis On Tour and his 1973 show broadcast via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. During this time period, it was played by the Elvis’ TCB Band, and featured Glen D. Hardin and James Burton.

Its British release was delayed for some time because of rights issues, allowing the song to build up massive advance orders and to enter the UK Singles Chart at number one, a very rare occurrence at the time. “It’s Now or Never” peaked at number seven on the R&B charts

The Elvis Religion

Elvis the new religion

I think that we are seeing a new religion emerging. Elvisism, Elvites, Presletarianism – something based around Elvis Presley.

The reason that I believe this is the many religious aspects of the Elvis story.

  • born in humble circumstances and poverty.
  • sole survivor of a twin birth that his father later claimed to recalling a strange light in the sky on the night of his birth
  • escaped death again at age 5 from a tornado that ripped through Tupelo.
  • He lived in Memphis along a mighty river and became known as The King, giving Pharaoh associations.
  • He recorded his first music on Sun Records – and most religions have sun gods, gods of light
  • He ushered in a great cultural change – broke racial barriers while heightening the generational gap and put overt sex at the cultural forefront
  • His personal image was one of racial tolerance, generosity/charity
  • The kisses, scarves and other items given out to the crowds during concerts is like having a blessing bestowed upon you
  • He was surrounded by a core group of disciples (Memphis Mafia) who have split into camps and written conflicting books after Elvis’ death
  • there are stories of him having visions, laying on hands healing,
  • there’s been after death sightings of him in person, or just his image appearing as people see Jesus, Virgin Mary,  and other religious figures in wood grain or mineral patterns, or on toasted bread products….
  • Elvis’ image is reproduced in religious type paintings
  • Impersonators or Tribute Artists are priests – even having special garments – Elvis’ stage wear and movie costumes.
  • people make pilgrimages to Graceland – especially for the winter holiday (Jan 8) and the end of summer (Aug 16) holidays – which is already a weeklong festival
  • The annual candlelight vigil are exhibiting a form of worship and ritual. As is the annual lighting of the Graceland holiday lights.
  • people have special areas in their homes of their Elvis collections, serving as altar areas or even rooms in their homes  which act as temples.

what other religious elements do you see in the Elvis story, that future generations will reinterpret?

There have only been five previous recipients of the award: Bing Crosby (for whom it has just been renamed), Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Irving Berlin.

This is one of the few legitimate forms of recognition that Elvis gets from the recording industry during his lifetime – but it is a highly significant one. Photo below, NARAS reps, Bing Crosby’s nephew, Chris with Elvis.

Newspaper Articles > 1976 > August 28, 1976. Houston, TX

Journalist Bob Claypool wrote the often-quoted review about this concert for the Houston Post, in it he said…

Elvis Presley has been breaking hearts for more than 20 years now, and Saturday afternoon in the Summit – in a completely new and unexpected way – he broke mine.
In short, the concert was awful – a depressingly incoherent, amateurish mess served up by a bloated, stumbling and mumbling figure who didn’t act like “The King” of anything, least of all rock ‘n’ roll.”
