Presley is currently on the best selling charts with ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ and the wide acceptance of this side should ease the way for the new disk.” The song would go on to top the Billboard National Country Music Chart and reach #4 on the Billboard Most Played By Jockeys chart in February, 1956, giving Elvis his first national exposure.

After finishing ‘I Want You, (She’s So Heavy), The Beatles worked on the running order for the Abbey Road album. The Hollywood Decade/The Elvis Establishment

February 15, 1961

Jackie Wilson was shot in his apartment in New York City by Juanita Jones, either a a jealous lover or crazed fan. In wrestling the gun from her, Wilson was hit in the stomach. Though he survived the ordeal, 21 days in a coma and losing a kidney, doctors were never able to remove the difficult-to-reach bullet.

At the RCA Studios in New York, the Marcels recorded “Blue Moon.”

February 15, 1962

At United Studios in Hollywood, Ray Charles recorded “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “You Don’t Know Me.”. The tunes will go on to top both the US and UK charts, and become an American Songbook Classic – with many covers, including Elvis.

February 15, 1963

Sam Cooke announced that he was cutting back on live performances to concentrate on songwriting and building his record labels, Sar and Derby.

The Beatles scored their first US No.1 album with Meet The Beatles! The album stayed at No.1 for eleven weeks. The album sold over four million copies in the US by December 31, 1964.

February 15, 1965

After completing the movie “Cat Ballou” starring Jane Fonda, Nat King Cole died of lung cancer at the age of 47. His daughter Natalie had just turned 15 the previous week. Nat originally played piano in Jazz bands, but stepped to the front of the stage for good when “Mona Lisa” became a number one hit in 1950. Cole continued his hit streak with “Unforgettable” (#12 in 1951), “A Blossom Fell” (#2 in 1955), “Send For Me” (#6 in 1957), “Looking Back” (#5 in 1958), “Ramblin’ Rose” (#2 in 1962) and “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer” (#6 in 1963). He hit the charts again in 1991 when his voice was dubbed into a duet with Natalie on an updated version of “Unforgettable” which rose to #14.

At EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles recorded “Ticket To Ride.” This was the first song by the band in which Paul McCartney was featured on lead guitar. The meaning of the title phrase remains unclear. McCartney said it was “a British Railways ticket to the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight,” and John Lennon said it described cards indicating a clean bill of health carried by Hamburg prostitutes in the 1960s. The Beatles played in Hamburg early in their musical career, and “ride/riding” was slang for having sex.

The Beatles released the single “Eight Days a Week,” but only in North America. Although it was a huge American hit, the group did not think highly of the song (John Lennon called it ‘lousy’) and they never performed it live.

Legendary vocalist Jackie Wilson died in Mount Holly, NJ after an eight-year coma brought about by a heart attack while onstage (September 25, 1975). He was singing “Lonely Teardrops” at the time. Attending the funeral were numerous stars, including the Spinners, Berry Gordy, Jr., and the Four Tops.  Jackie suffered a massive heart attack while playing a Dick Clark show at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on September 25, 1975, falling head-first to the stage while singing “Lonely Teardrops”. The blow to the head Jackie suffered left him comatose. For the next eight years and four months, he was in a vegetative state until his death at age 49. Al Green, the soul singer, and Elvis Presley were some of the few artists who regularly visited the bed-ridden Jackie. Elvis paid for some of Wilson’s medical bills in the 1970s,  while  Dick Clark paid all of Jackie’s medical bills up to the day he passed away.

However, their first and only single for the label, ‘Keep A’ Lovin’ Me’, was a flop, and they were quickly dropped from Columbia.

Johnny Mathis charted with one of the greatest recordings of the fifties, “Misty,” reaching #10 R&B and #12 pop. Brian Epstein went to Liverpool’s Cavern Club to see The Beatles perform for the first time. He had been getting requests at his NEMS music store for a record called “My Bonnie”. After several more visits, Epstein would offer to manage the group, which he did until his death in 1967.

Elvis Presley had his 9th UK #1 lasting 4 weeks with single with “His Latest Flame / Little Sister”.

In the US. His Latest Flame reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart, based (at the time) on the Top 100. However, the single’s Hot 100 chart run was atypical of a Top Ten hit. In the autumn of 1961 it shot from 22 to 4, then dropped to 10, then 26, all within the space of four weeks.

Little Sister made #5 in the US and # in the UK.

The first issue of the Rock and Roll magazine Rolling Stone, which included a free roach clip with every subscription, is published in San Francisco.  The name of the magazine was compiled from three significant sources: the Muddy Waters song, the first rock ‘n’ roll record by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. The cover featured a photo of John Lennon from his movie, How I Won The War.

A US Army captain is quoted in Rolling Stone magazine as saying “Rock and Roll music contributes to both the usage of drugs and the high VD rate among enlisted men in the army today.”

Eivets Rednow peaked at #66 pop with the title song from the film Alfie. After sixteen pop hits in a row it seems that Eivets wanted to test his audience’s loyalty to his sound, if not to his name. Eivets Rednow is Stevie Wonder spelled backwards.

After years of struggling as a member of two New York area bands, The Hassels and Attila, and as a bar room piano player, Billy Joel releases what will ultimately be his breakthrough album, “Piano Man”. The title song will be released as a single and become a Top Twenty-five hit early next year.

Randy Bachman, the former lead guitarist for The Guess Who, enjoyed a number one song with his new band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Randy stuttered through the lyrics of “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” on a demo recording as a private joke about his brother Gary, who had a speech impediment. The record company liked that take better than the non-stammering version and released it. The song not only gave the band their third US top thirty hit and a #2 in the UK, Gary Bachman stopped stuttering.
Elvis’ early songs all accentuated his stuttering.

The Wake and Aftermath

1982 Elvis Presley Enterprises/Graceland Tourism

1999
The Recording Industry Association of America announces their Artists Of The Century. The Beatles top the list for US sales of over 106 million albums. Garth Brooks was named most successful male artist (89 million albums sold) and Barbra Streisand the most successful female artist. (62 million albums sold). Elvis Presley had the most Gold and Platinum singles with 77, to go along with his 80 Gold and Platinum albums. Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind” (Princess Diana version) is the best selling single of all time and the Eagles “Greatest Hits 1971 – 1975” is the record holder for best selling album.
Elvis Presley was never an album artist, he worked through singles – and his EP 4 song discs are not counted, nor is 1956 and 1957 his biggest years of sales. So these lists are skewed to favor the modern performer in a much larger market that is changing from physical to digital sales. Elvis Presley would be first to all new formats as a test, and then not given credit for sales.
