Bruce Springsteen played the first of a seven night run at Oliver’s in Boston, Massachusetts playing two 60-minute sets each night.

The Rolling Stones release “Angie”, which will top the Billboard chart and reach #5 in the UK. At the time, the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition was rumored to have been written about David Bowie’s first wife Angela, the actress Angie Dickinson, Keith Richards’ newborn daughter Dandelion Angela, and Marianne Faithfull. However, in his 2010 memoir Life, Richards said that he had chosen the name at random when writing the song, before he knew that his baby would be named Angela or even knew that his baby would be a girl.

July 11, 1960

The novelty song “Alley-Oop” sat at the top of Billboard’s chart, credited to a then fictitious group called The Hollywood Argyles. The song was actually sung by Gary Paxton, who had been the latter half of Skip And Flip and was recorded after he had been advised that he was still under contract to Brent Records. Gary made up the group’s name and then had to put a band together when the song became a hit. In the UK, the record reached #24.

The Beatles appeared live on the ABC Television program “Lucky Stars (Summer Spin)”, performing ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, ‘Long Tall Sally’, ‘Things We Said Today’ and ‘You Can’t Do That’. To avoid the crowd of fans waiting for them, The Beatles arrived at the Teddington Studio Centre by boat, traveling down the River Thames.

Although the music world was being dominated by Rock and Roll, crooner Dean Martin’s version of a tune written in 1947, “Everybody Loves Somebody”, cracked the Billboard Top 40 on its way to number one. This would be Dino’s first Top 40 hit since 1958 and ultimately replaced “That’s Amore” as his signature song.

After being recorded on May 18th in just one take, The Animals‘ “House of the Rising Sun” topped the UK chart.

Stevie Wonder released his first single without the title “Little” in front of his name. “Hey Harmonica Man” reached number 29 on the singles chart, his third Top 40 hit.

Elvis Presley’s single “Kissin’ Cousins” hit #10 in the U.K. On March 27, 1992, the single “Kissin’ Cousins / It Hurts Me” was certified Gold by RIAA for selling in over 500,000 copies.

‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie was released in the UK for the first time. It was timed to coincide with the Apollo moon landing but had to be re-released before it became a hit, later in the year in the UK (but not until 1973 in the US). Bowie would later revisit his Major Tom character in the songs ‘Ashes to Ashes’, ‘Hallo Spaceboy’ and possibly the music video for ‘Blackstar’.

The Rolling Stones‘ “Honky Tonk Women” is released. The band started recording the tune as a Country song based on Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues”, but found that it made a better rocker.

Self Portrait gave Bob Dylan his fifth UK No.1 album. Released by Columbia Records, his tenth studio album was Dylan’s second double album, and featured mostly cover versions of well-known pop and folk songs.

Three Dog Night started a two-week run at No.1 in the US with their version of the Randy Newman song ‘Mama Told Me Not To Come’, which was also a No.3 hit in the UK. The song was first covered by Eric Burdon on his first solo album in 1966 and gave Tom Jones & Stereophonics a No.4 hit on the UK Singles Chart in 2000

The soundtrack to the 1969 Woodstock concert becomes the first triple-disc album to top the Billboard chart.

Elvis Presley’s “The Wonder of You” hit #1 in the U.K.  In the United States, both songs charted at #9 together in the spring of 1970; also reached number 37 on the US Country Singles chart, and number one on the easy listening chart. “The Wonder of You” was one of his most successful records in the UK ever, topping the UK Singles Chart for six weeks in the summer of that year. It also stayed at number one in the Irish Charts for three weeks that same year. This was the 59th Top 40 hit of his career.  “The Wonder of You” was one of about thirty-five songs Elvis would regularly perform at concerts. According to the original performer, Ray Peterson, “He [Elvis] asked me if I would mind if he recorded ‘The Wonder of You.’ I said, ‘You don’t have to ask permission; you’re Elvis Presley.’ He said, ‘Yes, I do. You’re Ray Peterson.'”

The Bruce Springsteen Band opened for Humble Pie at the Sunshine In, Asbury Park in New Jersey. After the show an impressed Peter Frampton from Humble Pie, tells Springsteen and the band he’d like to have them open for them on a national basis. Frampton also said he would be happy to get the band an audition with his record label, A & M Records. For no logical reason Springsteen’s manager Tinker West declined both offers on the spot.

The Hollywood Decade/The Elvis Establishment

February 15, 1961

Jackie Wilson was shot in his apartment in New York City by Juanita Jones, either a a jealous lover or crazed fan. In wrestling the gun from her, Wilson was hit in the stomach. Though he survived the ordeal, 21 days in a coma and losing a kidney, doctors were never able to remove the difficult-to-reach bullet.

At the RCA Studios in New York, the Marcels recorded “Blue Moon.”

February 15, 1962

At United Studios in Hollywood, Ray Charles recorded “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “You Don’t Know Me.”. The tunes will go on to top both the US and UK charts, and become an American Songbook Classic – with many covers, including Elvis.

February 15, 1963

February 15, 1964

Sam Cooke announced that he was cutting back on live performances to concentrate on songwriting and building his record labels, Sar and Derby.

The Beatles scored their first US No.1 album with Meet The Beatles! The album stayed at No.1 for eleven weeks. The album sold over four million copies in the US by December 31, 1964.

February 15, 1965

After completing the movie “Cat Ballou” starring Jane Fonda, Nat King Cole died of lung cancer at the age of 47. His daughter Natalie had just turned 15 the previous week. Nat originally played piano in Jazz bands, but stepped to the front of the stage for good when “Mona Lisa” became a number one hit in 1950. Cole continued his hit streak with “Unforgettable” (#12 in 1951), “A Blossom Fell” (#2 in 1955), “Send For Me” (#6 in 1957), “Looking Back” (#5 in 1958), “Ramblin’ Rose” (#2 in 1962) and “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer” (#6 in 1963). He hit the charts again in 1991 when his voice was dubbed into a duet with Natalie on an updated version of “Unforgettable” which rose to #14.

At EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles recorded “Ticket To Ride.” This was the first song by the band in which Paul McCartney was featured on lead guitar. The meaning of the title phrase remains unclear. McCartney said it was “a British Railways ticket to the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight,” and John Lennon said it described cards indicating a clean bill of health carried by Hamburg prostitutes in the 1960s. The Beatles played in Hamburg early in their musical career, and “ride/riding” was slang for having sex.

The Beatles released the single “Eight Days a Week,” but only in North America. Although it was a huge American hit, the group did not think highly of the song (John Lennon called it ‘lousy’) and they never performed it live.

February 15, 1966

Spinout

The main ranch house on the property, Circle G, was too small for the whole group, so Elvis started buying house trailers and initiated extensive repairs on the septic system.

John and Cynthia Lennon, along with George and Patti Harrison, fly to India to study meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Paul and Ringo would join them a few days later, but Starr would become bored and leave on March 1st. Much of the Beatles’ “White Album” was written during their stay.
February 15, 1969
Sly and the Family Stone started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Everyday People’, their first No.1.
In Fort Myers, Florida, Vickie Jones, a hairdresser from Virginia, was arrested for impersonating Aretha Franklin during a concert at a local club. Jones’ performance was so realistic that no one asked for a refund.
