His character shoulda gone with the bullfighter.

Fun in Acapulco was a Star Vehicle in a familiar movie plot of explaining a character with a backstory PTSD event.

Film plot better than most Elvis movies

Producers had given up on dramatic narratives for Presley movies. Still, in the Times, Thompson saw some sense in Fun in Acapulco’s story. “As for the plot,” wrote Thompson, “this production is pegged on a snug, reasonable situation that has Elvis afraid of heights after a circus trapeze accident in the States. As a lifeguard-troubadour, he trains a thoughtful eye on the 136-foot diving cliff, la Quebrada. Will he try it? Well, one guess, anybody.”

Early on the film certainly attempts to build tension around a mysterious event in the past of character Mike Windgren—his fear of the high diving board, his resistance to having his photo taken, and so on. The details of the circus accident that killed his brother are revealed too early, however. The screenplay would have served the film better had it maintained the suspense until near the story’s end.

Still, once the cause of the fear is known, the story allows for a logical progression of steps for Elvis’s character to regain his courage. The plot, then, was the best among Presley’s recent films over the previous couple of years. Variety, however, felt Elvis was ready for more serious stuff. “Presley has come a long way and is deserving of better material than has been provided in this Allan Weiss screenplay,” its review suggested.

‘Fun In Acapulco’ was Presley’s Christmas holiday picture at the end of 1963 and continued the ‘filmed travelogue’ with soundtrack album, assembly-line aspect of his career. The world was changing at a rapid pace. Less than a week prior to the film’s debut, US president John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas. Two months later the Beatles would lift the country out of its depression with their landmark appearances on the Ed Sullivan television program. A huge upheaval in pop music, dominated by the Fab Four, consumed the remainder of 1964. But somehow Presley’s management failed to notice.

The Latin-themed picture brought with it a slew of attempts to blend Elvis with similarly-themed musical motifs. There is a certain charm to the performances as a whole, and, as usual, both singer and musicians did all they could to bring the material to life. A recent assessment by Presley reissue producer Ernst Jorgensen deemed the soundtrack a ‘triumph of sound and atmosphere’ and considered Elvis ‘motivated’ for these sessions.

However, an honest listener has to question why a 28 year-old Elvis Presley, in the prime of his career, was cutting tracks like ‘Vino, Dinero y Amor’ or ‘(There’s) No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car’. One tends to agree with what Ernst stated back in 1984, that these songs were ‘RCA’s idea of Mexican material,’ and ‘a far cry not only from rock’n’roll, but also from pop music as it was developing at that time on the other side of the Atlantic’.

you are not just having sex with that person(s), but everyone they have and so on and so as, like the shampoo commercial would later say.

The 1960s was the high pressure about deodorant and not smelling like you worked; when sweat and odor is essential to attraction and health at the visual and pheromone level; the biology of dating and mating; attraction and repelling.

Elvis Presley Movie Star

As a teenager, Elvis worked as an usher in a movie theatre, dreaming of being the hero on screen.

He dreamed of being the movie hero and being in movies, and as with making a genre of music his own, so too, did he have his own Star Vehicle Presley Formula Flick.

It was in that theatre Elvis sat while Dewey Phillips played the one sided singed “That’s All Right Mama” for the first time on air. He got so many calls to re-play that song, that he called the boarding house where the Presleys lived and a neighbour got the phone and got Gladys, who then ran out of the house, with Vernon to get their boy down to the radio station to do his first on air interview, over before he realized it was going on. Elvis Presley had a stutter that got incorporated into his singing.

Elvis Presley’ first being in a movie was a short concert film as an opening act with Pat Boone headlining in the Bill Randle Cleveland Disc Jockey Radio Personality – it was likely broadcast on regional television, screened once at a local high school and the film has disappeared into a private European collector’s hand at the last rumour.

Elvis Presley’s short film:

The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc Jockey (Documentary) (performer: “That’s All Right, Mama”, “Mystery Train”, “Good Rockin’ Tonight”)

Then after screen testing, Elvis  was in his first movie in a supporting role. Not in Rainmaker with Katherine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster – Hollywood A Listers – but in a second Reno Brothers movie telling in a minor role made larger by Elvis playing it.

The truck driver was killed, and Carl was seriously injured, although back on the road in about a month. His brother Jay Perkins suffered a fractured neck; never fully recovered and was later diagnosed with a brain tumor, from which he died in 1958.  The accident derailed Perkins’ career, almost for good, as he was forced to spend months in the hospital nursing a fractured neck, broken collarbone, and a severe concussion, while Elvis Presley had a bigger hit with Carl’s song “Blue Suede Shoes.”

Elvis Presley To Play – Large Crowd Expected For Big Show At “Y”

Advance sale tickets are moving at a fast clip and a big attendance should be on hand to “rock and roll” with Elvis Presley, youthful singing sensation at the YMCA tomorrow night.
Presley, the atomic-driven “Mr. Dynamite” of the entertainment world, heads an all-star show that starts at 8 o’clock.
Just turned twenty-one Presley is called the greatest new personality in the last ten years of recorded music. He has best sellers in a number of divisions of RCA recordings, has made many radio and television appearances and is soon booked for a trip to Hollywood to make movies.
His best selling record right now is “Heartbreak Hotel.” Other favorites are “I Was the One,” “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” Good Rockin’ Tonight,” “Tutti Frutti” and “Blue Suede Shoes.”
A gay dresser and full of energy Presley is a great one of public appearances. His restless motions while singing have gained him acclaim from many sources. He is a favorite of the teen-aged set and scores of youngsters are expected to watch him work tomorrow night.
Presley appears here at the head of an outstanding show that also includes such favorites as Mother Mabelle and the Carter sisters and the comedy ace of Grand Ole Opry, Rod Brasfield. All of these stars have been seen on television many times.
Advance tickets are being sold at the James Harman Music Company on North Main Street and are moving at a good clip according to Mr. Hartman. The price range is a popular one. $1 for general admission and $1.50 for reserved seats.

The Salisbury Post reported, Heaven was a big auditorium in Lexington last night for a few thousand teen-agers. A dreamy-eyed young man by the almost, impossible name of Elvis Presley, the country’s newest singing sensation, was the attraction (to use the word mildly). In an appearance that couldn’t have lasted 15 minutes Elvis sent the bobby-soxers in the packed YMCA into a frenzy.4

Far be it from this writer to say whether or not the man can sing because the screams of the predominantly female crowd drowned out everything. But whatever it was, to use the words of the popular music world, the major portion of the audience was not only “sent,” man, it was gone. Gone. GONE.4

Less than six months ago, few people had even heard the name Elvis Presley. But that was before a disc jockey worked him in for a spot on the Dorsey brothers big Saturday night television production, “Stage Show.” The Dorseys are bewilderedly shaking their respective heads. Five times since he first appeared his sweeping popularity has caused the Dorseys (who know a good thing when they see it) to bring Elvis back for reappearances.4

Presley who just turned 21 years of age is a tall handsome young man who sweeps his hair back to the rear of his head to modernized ducktail fashion, has a set of even white teeth (if that means anything) is of average weight and has a style with a microphone that is all his own. Sinatra sort of leaned into his. Johnny Ray looked like a Golden Gloves boxer who just before he fell flat on his face was trying to find his. But this Presley boy wonder. The way he makes love to the thing, caresses it, is something to see, but it is also something that could not accurately be described by a household publication of any sort.4

And on top of all that, he handles a guitar that must be reinforced because of the treatment it gets.  And then Presley steps back, sweat pouring from his lace, his breathing heavy. With his shoulders twitching, hips swaying and legs moving in perfect rhythm, the house comes down. It one could put his finger on any particular thing that Presley does that has caused his sudden rise, it must be those body gyrations. Each tune he really got carried away with himself through his twisting and turning any audience applause needle would have popped right out of the glass.4

The four policemen who had to surround the boy to keep him from being torn apart said the crowd of over 5.000 was the biggest ever assembled for any attraction in the spacious new YMCA there. The place seats around 5,000 and last night saw them standing in the aisles. They had converged from every city and town within 50 miles of Lexington.  Presley is just about as bewildered about the whole thing as everybody else. But, nervously chomping on a piece of chewing gum before he went upstairs and onstage last night, Presley told this reporter, “I love it!”4

He said he decided on singing as a career about a year and a half ago. He had always liked it, but it was not until he and a small group got together and recorded a now-famous hillbilly song called “That’s All Right Mama.” The song went over big, and Presley has been at it ever since with the same combo, his and another guitar, a bass fiddle and a set of drums. Presley takes the hill-billy out of the hill-billy and in its place puts “rock and roll.”  He said his style just comes natural.  How does it feel to be the idol of the bobby-soxers?  Presley grinned sheepishly, shrugged and mumbled something to the effect that he himself can‘t quite realize what has happened, it’s all been so fast. In fact, it appears that it hasn’t thoroughly soaked in yet.4

Presley calls Memphis home, but he was born and reared in Tupelo, Miss. According to the publicity agents, he started singing when he used to listen to the “plaintive” songs of the field hands. He is an only child, and daddy was a truck driver who is not doing much of anything these days. He and mama are tickled pink, though, happy for their son. The Presleys moved to Memphis, the land of the blues, about eight years ago. Male reaction appears to be about nil to Presley. One man could be heard saying after it was all over, “I just can’t see lt.”

A freelance writer by the name of Jim Poling who began an assignment yesterday to do a feature on Presley for Pageant Magazine simply threw up his hands in amazement. He plans to stick with Presley and try to find the answer. Pageant wants the story around June.4

Standing quietly to the corner of the dressing room as the hundred or so bobby-soxers were trying to smash their way inside was a young man by the name of Gene Smith. Gene and Elvis are first cousins and grew up together. He drives Elvis’ long Cadillac. The rest of the time he stands around wearing an expression that he would like to unobtrusively pinch himself every few seconds to really see if the thing is true. And then Gene fades aside as the screeching youngsters surge on Elvis for a touch or an autograph.4

4Presley, like the troupers of old, went on last night even though he had been suffering during the day from a touch of flu. It he had failed to appear, there is some doubt that there would have been anything left of the Lexington “Y.” Also on the program were some of the Grand Ole Opry stars, but they were lost in the Presley.4

Current and hot: “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Tutti-Frutti,” “I Got a Gal” and “That’s All Right Mama.”  By the way, nobody fainted last night. But many red-faced youngsters with tears streaming from their entranced eyes, would undoubtedly have done so if the program had lasted another five minutes.4

The Wake and Aftermath

In “A House Divided,” the season finale cliffhanger episode of the CBS-TV series “Dallas,” J.R. Ewing, played by actor Larry Hagman, was shot. Priscilla Presley would later join the Dallas Cast.

The Beatles appeared live on the UK television program Ready Steady Go!, miming to ‘It Won’t Be Long’, ‘You Can’t Do That’, and ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’. They were also presented with a special award from US magazine Billboard, in recognition of The Beatles having the top three singles on the chart simultaneously.

George Harrison escorted teen star Hayley Mills and her mother to a midnight charity benefit showing of the film “Charade” at the Regal Cinema in Henley-on-Thames, England.

The Temptations released their debut album Meet the Temptations on the Gordy (Motown) label. The lineup on the cover features Eddie Kendricks, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Otis Williams, and newest Temptation Davis (later David) Ruffin. Ruffin had just joined the act three months before this album was released, and actually only appears on ‘The Way You Do The Things You Do’.

When Elvis Presley, who rides a motorcycle in current film, ‘Roustabout’, learned co-star Barbara Stanwyck could ride a motorcycle, Elvis promptly hoisted the four-time Academy Award nominee aboard a motorcycle built for two and they were off in a cloud of dust to the amazement of everybody in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Elvis and Miss Stanwyck are shown in a cow pasture where the film company was on location. (UPI)

Principal photography for ‘Roustabout’ started on March 20, 1964. On that day an article appeared in a Las Vegas newspaper that would hurt and haunt Elvis for the rest of his life.

‘Would you believe that Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole owe part of their current success to Elvis Presley?’ was the title of the piece that went on to say, ‘These two brilliant Shakespearean-trained actors, winning worldwide acclaim for their performances in ‘Becket’ might not have had the opportunity to star in the picture, were it not for Sir Swivel Hips’.

Quoting producer Hal Wallis, the article indicated that it was the profits from the commercially successful, light-hearted Elvis movies that made it possible for Wallis to fund the production of more ‘artistic pictures’. The article was picked up by the news services and printed throughout the country. For Elvis it confirmed his fears that he was never going to be taken seriously as an actor.

Janis Joplin started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with her version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song “Me And Bobby McGee.” Joplin, who was a lover and a friend of Kristofferson’s from the beginning of her career to her death, changed the sex and a few of the lyrics in her cover. Kristofferson states he did not write this song for her, but the song is associated with her – especially, he has said, in the line “Somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away.” Joplin died of a drug overdose the year before on 4th October aged 27.
At their own expense The Rolling Stones placed full page advertisements in all the UK’s music papers disclaiming any connection with the release of the Decca album ‘Stone Age’ saying ‘in our opinion the content is below the standard we try to keep.’

Elvis performed at the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee. Without preparations RCA had its mobile recording truck on hand to record this final show of the tour – and Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis was recorded.
He earned his third Grammy Award for this album’s performance of “How Great Thou Art“. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on July 15, 1999.
On March 17, 2014, close to the 40th anniversary of the concert, Sony/RCA Legacy re-released the album as a two-CD set.
