Vernon was released from Parchman Penitentiary serving eight months of a three year sentence for altering a check from 4 dollars to 40 dollars.
Gladys had gone door to door with toddler Elvis to get support and it worked, this leniency was the result of a ‘petition of the citizens of Lee County and on a letter from Mr. O. S. Bean, the party on whom the checks were forged’. The document is signed by Governor Hugh White.
Mr Bean had been their landlord, and his daughter was a Tupelo Schoolteacher who encouraged Elvis to sing at the State Fair.

Parchman Prison was a particularly grim one of the era, and would feature in Elvis’ life more than Vernon’s absence from the family.

The Prisonaires | Sun Record Company

In the early 1950s Sun Records signed to the label The doo-wop group the Prisonaires was comprised of five men who made Sun’s more famous bad boys look like proverbial choir boys. The Prisonaires were actual prisoners, all of them doing hard time for serious offenses; not bad boys on tv, movie screens and records.

“Memphis’ Elvis Outdoes Caruso in Record Sales” Memphis Commercial Appeal on February 6, 1957. The article reminded readers that the concept of “golden disks” began when operatic star Enrico Caruso’s recording of “Vesta la giubba” was the first to sell more than a million copies.

The article explained that in a single year Elvis completely eclipsed Caruso’s record sales. In 1956 Elvis had five recordings reach million-seller status. They were “Don’t Be Cruel”/“Hound Dog” (3,200,000), “Love Me Tender” (2,300,000), “Heartbreak Hotel” (1,600,000), and “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” (1,200,000). “These and other records pushed his sales to 11 million singles in his first year in the big time, plus two albums,” the Commercial-Appeal reported. It also noted, however, that Elvis was still a long way away from topping the all-time top-selling single. That was Tommy Dorsey’s “Boogie Woogie,” which sold 4,500,000 copies back in 1938.

27-year-old Jesse Belvin, who scored a 1956 hit with ‘Goodnight, My Love’, was killed in a car accident in Hope, Arkansas. His wife and the car’s driver also died of their injuries. The three were trying to make a fast get-a-way from the first ever mixed race audience concert in the town of Little Rock, after threats had been made against Belvin’s life, foul play could well have been a part.

The Hollywood Decade/The Elvis Establishment

February 6, 1961

Chubby Checker & the Dreamlovers charted R&B on their way to #1 and their second million-seller with “Pony Time.” The song was a revision of Clarence “Pinetop” Smith’s “Boogie Woogie” in 1928, and Checker’s version beat out a competing recording by Don Covay & the Goodtimers that reached only #60 pop.

“Shop Around” by the Miracles was #1 on the R&B chart for a fourth week.

Elvis couldn’t attend cousin Junior Smith’s funeral because he had been called back to Hollywood to re-shoot the ending of Wild In The Country. Preview audiences had reacted badly to the suicide of Hope Lange’s character.

The Righteous Brothers started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the Phil Spector produced ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. The song was also No.1 in the UK. According to the RIAA, the song has now been played on US radio stations over 8 million times, more than any other record in history.

The Rolling Stones second album ‘Rolling Stones No.2’ started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK charts. The album followed its predecessor’s tendency to largely feature R&B covers. However, it did contain three compositions from the still-developing Mick Jagger – Keith Richards songwriting team.

The Righteous Brothers climbed the final rung to #1 with “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”.  Petula Clark gave way with “Downtown” while Shirley Ellis maintained at #3 with “The Name Game”.  Gary Lewis & the Playboys reached #4 with “This Diamond Ring”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Hold What You’ve Got” by Joe Tex, the Searchers were on their way down with “Love Potion Number Nine”, the Kinks moved to position #7 with “All Day And All Of The Night”, the Temptations entered the Top 10 with one of their biggest hits–“My Girl”, Marvin Gaye slipped with “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You” and a posthumous release by Sam Cooke (“Shake”) moved to #10.

The Beatles had the #1 album for the fourth week with Beatles ’65.  Where Did Our Love Go by the Supremes was runner-up, the Soundtrack to “Mary Poppins” was third, followed by the Soundtrack to “My Fair Lady”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Beach Boys Concert, Robert Goulet at #6 with My Love Forgive Me, the Soundtrack to “Fiddler on the Roof”, Barbra Streisand’s People at #8, Coast to Coast from the Dave Clark Five and the Soundtrack to “Roustabout” by Elvis Presley.

February 6, 1966

Elvis bought a white buckskin horse and a quarter horse named Conchita’s Gold, as well as a Case tractor and 2 El Camino pickup trucks.
Elvis’ friend, actor Nick Adams, died of an apparent drug overdose. However, there were no drug paraphernalia and the typewriter given to Adams by James Dean was missing. Adam’s daughter would later publish Nick’s manuscript about his friendship with Elvis, Nathalie Wood and the Tupelo Homecoming, written on that typewriter.

The Soundtrack to “Jesus Christ Superstar” was second with Santana’s Abraxas third. The Jackson 5’s “Mama’s Pearl” charted, reaching #2 pop and R&B. It was kept from the top spot by the Osmond’s “One Bad Apple,” which was offered to Motown for the Jacksons but was rejected as sounding too adolescent.
In a rare feat, a Country song crossed over to the Pop charts and became the best selling single in America when Lynn Anderson’s “Rose Garden” climbed to the top of the Cash Box hit parade.
Marvin Gaye’s critically claimed “What’s Goin’On” was released. It reached #2 pop and #1 R&B.

Felder would launch a $50 million law suit against guitarist Glen Frey and drummer Don Henley, alleging wrongful termination and breach of implied-in-fact contract. Henley and Frey then countersued Felder for breach of contract, alleging that Felder had written and attempted to sell the rights to a “tell-all” book. US Tax Court Judge Mark Holmes had always been puzzled by the rap at the end of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, so when the star’s former lawyer John Branca appeared in front of him, he took the opportunity to settle the matter. “What exactly does ‘the funk of 40,000 years’ mean?” “Karma,” answered Branca. The exchange came during the first day of a trial looking into Michael Jackson’s debts to the taxman. The IRS claimed that Jackson’s estate owed it over $700 million (£566 million) in taxes and penalties, a massive chunk of the star’s estimated $1bn fortune. It put Jackson’s team in the strange position of arguing the star was worth much less, after his image was tarnished by accusations of child molestation, skin bleaching and drug use.
