Elvis, Scotty, Bill and Bob Neal flew to New York City for The Arthur Godfrey audition at 2.30 p.m. on the 14th floor at 501 Madison Avenue. Elvis plays “Good Rockin’ Tonight” but the performance was deemed weak and the show’s producers turned him down. Elvis’ physical appearance was likely also a factor.

In Hartford, Connecticut, 11 members of the audience at a concert featuring Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were arrested for allegedly trying to incite a riot.

Carl Perkins and his band had been in a career ending car crash; Perkins was in his mid 20s and married. Blue Suede Shoes, his biggest song.

RCA ships “Elvis Presley,” the first album in Elvis’ discography. This album full of SUN and RCA Elvis songs soon goes to #1 on Billboard’s pop album chart for 10 weeks. It is the first Elvis album to reach over $1 million in sales at under $4 per LP, thus earning Elvis his first gold album award – and is the First Rock n Roll LP.

The iconic cover photograph was taken at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory in Tampa, Florida, on July 31, 1955.

On the day of the show Elvis made a brief appearance at the WMAL-TV studio to promote the show that night on “Town & Country Time.” Dean later wrote in his autobiography:

Elvis was the featured entertainer on the boat that night and was booked on our show to promote the cruise, apparently because it wasn’t quite full. I had the excruciating task of conducting the interview with Elvis, possibly the worst I’ve ever done.

Me: So, you’re gonna be on the S.S. Mt. Vernon tonight, are you, Elvis?
Elvis: Yep.

And that was it. “Yep, nope . . . ” and that’s all he would say. But I’m sure it didn’t matter; all it would take would be for the gals who tuned in to that TV show to get a good look at him and he wouldn’t have any trouble selling more tickets. Years later, when we were both playing in Las Vegas, Elvis would apologize profusely for leaving me hanging on that interview, He told me, “You know, Jimmy, I was so sorry about that but I was scared to death.”

“Lucille” by little Richard charted, reaching #21 pop and #1 R&B. Out of Richard’s first six singles, five had both sides chart, including the flip of “Lucille,” “Send Me Some Lovin’ ” (#3 R&B, #54 pop).

The Platters charted with “I’m Sorry,” reaching #11 pop and #15 R&B. Its B-side, “He’s Mine,” soared to #5 R&B and #23 pop, making that Platters single the sixth 45 in a row to have both sides chart on the pop Top 10.

Elvis attended an all-night gospel singing at Ellis Auditorium – Elvis and The Blackwood Brothers, featuring JD Sumner.

The Presleys lived at Audobon Drive, Graceland purchased on March 19.

March 23, 1958

On CBS-TV’s “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The Rays, Roberta Peters, and Bert Lahr also performed while The Four Preps sang “26 Miles” – they were a teenage quartet from Hollywood, California who called themselves The Four Preps saw their first big hit, “Twenty-Six Miles (Santa Catalina)” peak at #2 on the Hot 100. They would go on to place six more songs in the Top 40 over the next four years, including “Big Man” (#3) and “Down By The Station” (#13).

This was Elvis’ last night before his inductions. Elvis, Anita Wood and some friends went to a drive-in and afterwards everyone went roller-skating. Elvis didn’t go to bed all night.

“Venus” by Frankie Avalon spent a third week at #1.

Ray Peterson recorded the original version of “The Wonder Of You”, which will climb to #25 on the Billboard chart. Elvis Presley would take the same song to #9 in 1970.

The Skyliners, a five member group from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, entered the Billboard Pop chart for the first time with the now classic doo-wop hit, “Since I Don’t Have You”. The song will be their biggest success, reaching #12. Joe Rock would later say that he was upset about a girl who had just left him and wrote most of the lyrics while sitting in his car between stoplights.

Elvis Presley released the single “Stuck On You” b/w “Fame And Fortune.” RCA Victor decided to release all of its singles, starting with Presley’s “Stuck On You,” in both mono and stereo versions.

Elvis Presley had his seventh UK No.1 single with ‘Wooden Heart.’ No. 1 for six weeks in March and April 1961. The song was based on a German folk song and was featured in Presley’s film GI Blues.

Bobby Darin’s “You’re The Reason I’m Living” remained third while the Chiffons were on the move from 10-4 with “He’s So Fine” and previous #1 “Walk Like A Man” from the Four Seasons fell to the #5 spot. Some of the content was first published in Lennon’s ‘Beachcomber’ column in Mersey Beat. It was the first solo Beatle project in any form. The single would rise to #14 and helped push the album “Vincebus Eruptum” to #11. Jim Morrison of The Doors called the trio “The single most powerful band I’ve ever seen.”

Paul Mauriat had a hold on #1 on the Adult chart for the sixth consecutive week with “Love Is Blue”.

The late Otis Redding was still at #1 with “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”, one of The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era*. Another one, “Love Is Blue” by Paul Mauriat, which had spent five weeks at #1, now climbed back to #2.

In response to Jim Morrison’s alleged exposure incident 3 weeks earlier: Entertainers Jackie Gleason, Kate Smith, The Lettermen and Anita Bryant appear in Miami, Florida at what is billed as the Rally for Decency. Posters for the event warn that “longhairs and weird dressers” won’t be allowed inside. Four days later, President Richard Nixon sends a letter of appreciation to the organizers of the rally.

Phil Spector took the tapes for the aborted Beatles “Get Back” project to EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London to begin reshaping them into the “Let It Be” album. At the same time in the next studio, Paul McCartney was working on his first solo album.

Elvis returned to Los Angeles and the next evening he flew on to Memphis.

John Lennon was ordered to leave the U.S. within 60 days by immigration authorities. This was the beginning of his long fight to stay in the country. The reason given for the deportation was related to his 1968 conviction for possession of marijuana in England.

Elvis bought 25 watches at $75 each from Memphis jeweler Harry Levitch.

Pink Floyd began the first of eight days recording performances at Pompei, Italy’s Roman Amphitheater.

The film of The Concert For Bangladesh featuring George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton premiered in New York. The event was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in history. The concert raised almost $250,000 (£166,667) for Bangladesh relief, which was administered by UNICEF. Sales of the album and DVD continue to benefit the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF. By 1985, through revenue raised from the Concert for Bangladesh live album and film, an estimated $12 million had been sent to Bangladesh in relief. It would be the inspiration for LiveAid and future relief based mega-events.

Just before stepping out on stage Elvis whispered to his cousin: “You didn’t think I’d make it, did you?” and Billy recalled that Elvis put on “a hell of a show”.

John Lennon’s son Julian gave his first concert in San Antonio, Texas. Over the next two years he would place four songs on the Hot 100, including “Valotte” (#9) and “Too Late For Goodbyes” (#5).

Former Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty went to #1 on the US album chart with his third solo LP, “Centerfield”. Using over-dubbing, Fogerty played all of the instruments on every track. The RIAA has since certified the album Double-Platinum (2 million album sales) on the strength of the hit singles “The Old Man Down the Road”, “Rock and Roll Girls” and the title track.

Former Earth Wind And Fire vocalist Philip Bailey teamed up with Phil Collins to top the UK chart with “Easy Lover”, which had reached #2 in the US in February.

REO Speedwagon remained at the top for a third week with “Can’t Fight This Feeling”. Madonna was bidding for another #1 with “Material Girl” (she wouldn’t make it) and Phil Collins was up to 3 with his solo hit “One More Night”. After a concerted try at the top, Glenn Frey was down with “The Heat Is On”. The rest of the Top 10: John Lennon’s son, Julian, with “Too Late For Goodbyes”, Teena Marie at #6 with “Lovergirl”, Tina Turner and the title track from Private Dancer, Survivor moved from 14 to 8 with “High On You”, Journey had their 19th hit with “Only The Young” and Frankie Goes to Hollywood closed the list with “Relax”.

John Fogerty had the #1 album with Centerfield. Phil Collins closed in with No Jacket Required in just its second week for the great album. Bruce Springsteen remained third with Born in the U.S.A. while Wham! dropped from the top spot with Make It Big. The Soundtrack to “Beverly Hills Cop” came in fifth. The rest of the Top 10: Private Dancer from Tina Turner, Madonna fell down with Like a Virgin, REO Speedwagon dropped with Wheels Are Turnin’, Foreigner’s Agent Provacateur and Bryan Adams held on to #10 with his amazing album Reckless.

Billy Joel marries Christy Brinkley on a boat moored alongside the Statue Of Liberty. Her engagement ring was described as a diamond solitaire “the size of a sugar cube.” The pair would split in March, 1994.

Bill Kenny, legendary singer of the pioneering Ink Spots, died.

The initial Soul Train Music Awards in Hollywood, CA were co-hosted by Luther Vandross and Dionne Warwick. It was the first televised awards ceremony to pay exclusive homage to black producers, songwriters and recording artists in the music industry.

Fleetwood Mac began their Behind the Mask world tour with 14 dates in Australia, beginning at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane.

1991

Timmy T. had a huge #1 with “One More Try”, taking over from “Someday” by Mariah Carey. Gloria Estefan was up to #3 with “Coming Out Of The Dark” while Tracie Spencer followed with “This House”. The rest of the Top 10: “Get Here” from Oleta Adams, Tara Kemp moved nicely with “Hold You Tight”, Wilson Phillips had another big hit with “You’re In Love”, moving from 14-7, Londonbeat had people dancing with “I’ve Been Thinking About You”, Madonna moved in with “Rescue Me” and Enigma jumped from 19-10 with “Sadeness Part 1”.

Elton John joined George Michael on stage at London’s Wembley Arena for a duet on the 1974 hit “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”. The ‘live’ version will be released as a single and would top the charts on both sides of the Atlantic next December. Michael will donate $500,000 from the royalties to various charities.

For a fourth week, Mariah Carey’s incredible debut album was #1.

1992

Janet Jackson signed with Virgin Records for $16 million.

The United States Supreme Court upheld a judgement awarding Bette Midler $400,000. Midler had sued an advertising agency that used a Midler sound-alike in a commercial.

1994

The Staples Singers and Patti LaBelle performed at a joint benefit for the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and the Country Music Foundation at the Universal Amphitheater.

1996

The Beatles debuted at #12 with their first release in 20 years–“Real Love”.

Celine Dion went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Because You Loved Me’, her second US No.1, a No.5 hit in UK. The Diane Warren song was taken from the film ‘Up Close And Personal’ starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer. And on the same day her album ‘Falling Into You’ went to No.1 on the UK album chart.

Celine Dion scored her 12th hit and second #1 song with “Because You Loved Me”. The Tony Rich Project were runners up with “Nobody Knows”. Alanis Morisette had the only new Top 10 with “Ironic”.

Alanis Morissette held on to #1 on the Album chart with Jagged Little Pill for a third week with more to come.

U2 went to number one on the album chart with their fifth studio LP Pop.

Michael Jackson announced that he would donate the proceeds from his next two concerts to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Red Cross.

Lauryn Hill began the first of three sold-out concerts at the Madison Square Garden. The highlight was a duet with Mary J. Blige on “I Used to Love Him.” She later donated $50,000 to a refugee fund-raising project.

In Gibraltar, a set of postage stamps was released commemorating what would have been the 30th wedding anniversary of Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

Neil Aspinall, who ran the Apple Corps music empire for the Beatles from 1970 – 2007 died at a hospital in New York from cancer aged 66. A school friend of Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison, he was regarded by some of the band as the “fifth Beatle” becoming The Beatles road manager in 1961 before becoming their personal assistant. He led the legal battle with Apple computers over the use of the Apple name and a royalties dispute between the Beatles and record label EMI. Aspinall had also played background instruments on Beatles tracks including ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, ‘Within You Without You’ and ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite.’

Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida,” an album of songs for the Broadway production of “Aida” was released. Performers contributing tracks to the album included Sting, LeAnn Rimes, the Spice Girls, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men, Shania Twain, Lenny Kravitz, James Taylor, and Lulu.
