The lead singer was emergency lead Bill Baker, drafted from the Connecticutt group the Chestnuts, as the Satins’ regular frontman, Fred Parris, had received a draft notice, courtesy of Uncle Sam.
Pat Boone makes his acting debut in the musical comedy Bernardine. The movie also features his hit songs “Love Letters In The Sand” and “Bernardine.”

Roy Orbison reached No.2 on the US singles chart with ‘Only the Lonely,’ his first hit. The song was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, so Orbison decided to record the song himself.
The Ventures “Walk Don’t Run” enters the US Pop chart and introduces the instrumental Surf sound to Rock ‘n’ Roll. The song will peak at #2 a month later.
Elvis Presley‘s “It’s Now or Never” debuted on Billboard’s Pop music chart. The song was adapted from the Italian tune “O Sole Mio”, written in 1899.

The Beatles performed two shows at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, then performed at the Cabaret Club (28 Duke Street) later in the evening. It was the group’s only show at the Cabaret Club, which has since been demolished.

“Rag Doll” by the 4 Seasons was #1 for a second week. “A Hard Day’s Night” by the Beatles moved up from #21 to #2. The Beach Boys’ former #1 “I Get Around” came in third, followed by “Memphis” from Johnny Rivers and “The Girl From Ipanema” by Getz and Gilberto. The rest of the Top 10: Jan & Dean with “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena”, the Dave Clark Five slid down with “Can’t You See That She’s Mine”, “Dang Me” from Roger Miller, Dusty Springfield posted her first Top 10 song with “Wishin’ And Hopin'” and the Impressions remained at 10 with “Keep On Pushing”.
The Beatles topped both the US and UK album charts with “A Hard Day’s Night”, as well as having the number one single in both countries with the LP’s title track. Oddly, the album issued in America had a different track listing than the one released in Great Britain.
The Beatles moved from #12 to #1 in their second week with the album A Hard Day’s Night.
Billboard magazine reported that the Beatles‘ new feature film, “A Hard Day’s Night,” had already made back its production costs from sales of the soundtrack album.
The Zombies released the single “She’s Not There” on Decca Records.
Marvin Gaye records “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You.” Written by the Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the title comes from one of Jackie Gleason’s catch phrases.

The Byrds were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the Bob Dylan song ‘Mr Tambourine Man’. The first Bob Dylan song to reach No.1. The Byrds’ recording of the song was influential in initiating the musical subgenre of folk rock, leading many contemporary bands to mimic its fusion of jangly guitars and intellectual lyrics.
“I Can’t Help Myself” by the Four Tops was #1 on the R&B chart for the eighth straight week.
“Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones reigned for a third week at #1. “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” by Herman’s Hermits was at #2 with the Four Tops’ former #1 “I Can’t Help Myself” third.
Gary Lewis & the Playboys had a hot song with “Save Your Heart For Me”. It moved up from #40 to #13 on this date.
Bob Dylan, backed by “The Paul Butterfield Blues Band,” horrified the audience at the Newport Folk Festival with his new electric sound. He was booed off stage after three tunes but returned with his acoustic guitar to play two songs — “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
The Beach Boys‘ “California Girls” is released in the US, where it will reach #3 in September. The song was the first Beach Boys recording to include vocals from Bruce Johnston who had joined the group to substitute for Brian Wilson on concert tours.
The trio of Dino, Desi and Billy achieve their first US chart entry with “I’m A Fool”, which will rise to #17. Dino, the son of Dean Martin, Desi, the son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, along with Billy Hinsche would also crack the Top 40 with “Not The Lovin’ Kind” later in the year.

Jefferson Airplane‘s second album “Surrealistic Pillow” is certified Gold on the strength of the Top Ten hits, “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit”.
The Beatles meet Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose lecture on Transcendental Meditation (TM) they had gone to hear at the Hilton Hotel in London. TM involved the silent repetition of a word or sound to produce a state of mind that reduces stress, calms the mind, and energizes both mind and body. The Maharishi invited The Beatles to travel with him to Bangor, in North Wales, to attend more lectures. They accepted his invitation.

The Beatles began recording “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with just a solo version by George Harrison backed by his acoustic guitar and an organ part towards the end.
James Drake, who billed himself as Nervous Norvus for his 1956, #8 US hit “Transfusion”, a novelty tune about bloody accidents, died of liver failure at the age of 56.

Paul McCartney recorded a demo of his new song ‘Come and Get It’ at Abbey Road studios in London. McCartney gave the song to The Iveys, (soon to become known as Badfinger). The song was later used as the theme for the movie The Magic Christian. The Beatles also recorded ‘Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard’ for their forthcoming Abbey Road album.
Santana, the Guess Who, the Byrds, the Youngbloods, Ten Years After, Bo Diddley, It’s A Beautiful Day, and the Flying Burrito Brothers performed on the opening day of the Seattle Pop Festival at Gold Creek Park in Woodinville, Washington.
The Doors played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California.
Led Zeppelin, the First Edition, and Pacific Gas & Electric performed on the opening day of the Midwest Rock Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Toronto native Neil Young joined “Crosby, Stills and Nash” for the first time at a concert at the Fillmore East in New York. Young had worked with Stephen Stills in “Buffalo Springfield.” “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s” second appearance was at the Woodstock Festival a month later. The quartet broke up in 1971 but re-formed a number of times in later years.
Barbra Streisand opened the new International Hotel in Vegas, and she experienced all the technical difficulties of a brand new venue.

The Jackson 5 wrapped up six weeks at #1 on the R&B chart with their first single “The Love You Save”.
The Carpenters “Close To You” topped the Billboard Pop chart and became the first of twenty US Top 40 hits for the brother and sister team. The song itself had been written in 1963 by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and was first offered to Herb Alpert, who said he didn’t feel comfortable singing ‘so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair’.
The Carpenters would soon become household names as “Close To You” first entered the #1 position on this date. Three Dog Night was next with “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)”. Freda Payne’s “Band Of Gold” moved up to #3, the Jackson 5 had “The Love You Save” and Bread was up from 10-5 with their first single “Make It With You”. The rest of the Top 10: “Ball Of Confusion” from the Temptations, Blues Image was at #7 with “Ride Captain Ride”, the Five Stairsteps remained on the eighth step with “O-o-h Child”, Stevie Wonder placed his 23rd hit–“Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” at #9 and Melanie finished the list with “Lay Down”.

T. Rex was hot in the U.K, landing the #1 song “Get It On”.
Carole King remained at #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for the fifth week with “It’s Too Late”.
A cover version of “Indian Reservation”, a number three hit in the UK by Don Fardon, went to number one in the US for The Raiders. The song was actually recorded by Mark Lindsay alone, but he chose to put the group’s name on the label as a sign of friendship for his old buddy, Paul Revere.
“Indian Reservation” by the Raiders was #1, giving the likable group from Boise, Idaho their 19th hit but first and only #1 song. Carole King from Stanley, Idaho fell to #2 after five weeks with her classic “It’s Too Late”. Both songs are in The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era*. James Taylor was up against tough competition but he stayed at #3 with “You’ve Got a Friend” while Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds were stuck at 4 with “Don’t Pull Your Love”. The rest of the Top 10: Jean Knight’s one and only–“Mr. Big Stuff”, Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose dropped with “Treat Her Like A Lady”, Tommy James moved up to #7 with his solo hit “Draggin’ The Line”, the Bee Gees had song #8–“How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, John Denver scored the first Top 10 of his career with “Take Me Home, Country Roads” while the Grass Roots posted their 16th hit with “Sooner Or Later”.
CCR exploded up the chart as “Sweet Hitch-Hiker” moved from 68 to 37.

The show closed in 1990 after 6,137 performances. “A Chorus Line” opened at the Shubert Theatre in New York after a two-month run at a small theatre in the New York Shakespeare Festival complex in the East Village. It became Broadway’s longest-running show, finally closing on April 28, 1990, after 6,137 performances. More than 6.5 million people paid $150 million to see the show during its Broadway run. Productions of “A Chorus Line” were also mounted in more than 20 countries.

The Beach Boys‘ “20 Golden Greats” LP started a ten week stay at #1 on the UK album chart during its 86 week run. The compilation became the second biggest selling album of the year in Great Britain.
Lou Rawls moved to the top of the R&B chart with his great summer song “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine”.
The Manhattans climbed to the top after 15 weeks with “Kiss And Say Goodbye”, sending “Afternoon Delight” by Starland Vocal Band to #2. The Brothers Johnson could get no higher than #3 with their great song “I’ll Be Good To You”. Newcomer Starbuck was feeling good with “Moonlight Feels Right”, as it edged up to 4 while Gary Wright hit #5 with “Love Is Alive”. The rest of the Top 10: Seals & Crofts moved from 16 to 6 with “Get Closer”, the Beatles were at position #7 with “Got To Get You Into My Life”, the duo of Elton John & Kiki Dee moved from 23 to 8 with “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, the Beach Boys posted their 45th hit but their first Top 10 in 10 years with “Rock And Roll Music” and actor John Travolta had a Top 10 song with “Let Her In”.
Peter Frampton moved from 7 to 1 with the album Frampton Comes Alive, bumping Wings at the Speed of Sound to #2. George Benson remained at 3 with Breezin’, Chicago X was at #4 at Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled release was still at #5 after 52 weeks. The rest of the Top 10: Jefferson Starship moved from 50 to 6 with Spitfire, Neil Diamond was up to 7 with Beautiful Noise, the Beatles with Rock ‘N’ Roll Music, the Steve Miller Band moved into the Top 10 with Fly Like an Eagle and Aerosmith plummeted with Rocks.
Alan Parsons, the famed engineer and producer, organized his own group to be called the Alan Parsons Project, debuted on the chart with their first single “(The System Of) Doctor Tarr And Professor Feather.”
Two years after it peaked at #60 in the US, Hall And Oates‘ “She’s Gone” is re-issued by Atlantic Records. This highly edited, remixed version would climb to number 7.

western singer Foy Willing died at age 63. He had a popular band in the 1940s, “The Riders of the Purple Sage.” Willing scored three top-10 country hits — “Texas Blues” in 1944 and “Detour” and “Have I Told You Lately (That I Love You),” both from 1946.

Little Richard, billed as the Reverend Richard Penniman, spoke to a revival meeting in San Francisco about the dangers of rock & roll.

AC/DC released Back in Black, their first album since the death of singer Bon Scott. It went to number four.
Larry Graham, the former bass guitarist of Sly And The Family Stone, began his first solo tour by opening for the Isley Brothers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Graham’s “One in a Million You” was on its way up the charts at the time and would peak at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
Kiss unveiled their new drummer, Eric Carr, at New York’s Palladium. Rather than looking like a hawk, he was made up like a fox.

Survivor started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Eye Of The Tiger’, taken from the film ‘Rocky III‘. Also No.1 in the UK. Survivor won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance for the song.
“Even the Nights Are Better” from Air Supply was the new #1 Adult Contemporary song.
After years of trying, Survivor had a hit song, and it wasn’t just any hit record, but the #1 classic “Eye Of The Tiger”. Toto spent a fourth week at #2 with “Rosanna” and “Hurts So Good” from “John Cougar (Mellencamp) was third. Fleetwood Mac was up to 4 with “Hold Me” and the Dazz Band found itself at #5 with “Let It Whip”. The rest of the Top 10: Steve Miller had his first Top 10 song in five years–“Abracadabra”, Chicago was racing up the charts (11-6) with their great comeback song “Hard To Say I’m Sorry”, the Human League remained in the Top 10 after 22 weeks with “Don’t You Want Me”, Air Supply collected their seventh consecutive Top 10 song to start their career (#6 all-time) with “Even The Nights Are Better”, the Motels were at 9 with “Only The Lonely” and REO Speedwagon closed out the list with “Keep The Fire Burnin'”.

Willie Mae ‘Big Mama’ Thornton died at the age of 58 died in Los Angeles of heart and liver complications. She had a No.1 R&B hit in 1953 with ‘Hound Dog’ (later covered by Elvis Presley). She also wrote and recorded ‘Ball ‘n’ Chain,’ which Janis Joplin recorded.
Reverend Clarence LaVaughn Franklin (Aretha Franklin‘s father) dies five years after being shot during a robbery attempt at his Detroit home. The incident left him in a coma until his death at age 69.

La Bamba, a film biography about the life of Richie Valens, opened in theaters. The film starred Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens and Esai Morales as Ritchie’s older brother Bob. The production had the full support of the Valenzuela family and Bob and Connie Valenzuela even came to the set to help the actors portray their characters correctly. The music was performed by Los Lobos. It’s generally well received, especially the soundtrack by Los Lobos. Lou Diamond Phillips stars as Valens, who died in the infamous plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper; Marshall Crenshaw appears as Buddy Holly and Brian Setzer as Eddie Cochran.
Alex Sadkin, producer of Duran Duran, Simply Red, Bob Marley and Grace Jones, died from injuries suffered in a car crash in Nassau, the Bahamas.

UB40 hit #1 with one of the only remakes of a #1 song (Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”) to hit #1 in the Rock Era. Elvis Presley had the first hit with the song, in 1961, Corey Hart was next up with a top 30 hit in 1987, and Hall and Oates recorded the song for 1990’s, The Last Temptation of Elvis charity album. UB40 originally covered the song for the Honeymoon in Vegas soundtrack, but Bono’s version was chosen instead. Also on the same day UB40 went to No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Promises And Lies’.

Nina Simone fired a gun at a pair of noisy teenagers playing next door to her home in southern France. She was put on 18 months probation and ordered to seek psychological counseling.
Jimi Hendrix’s father regained the rights to his son’s music. Under a court settlement, Al Hendrix paid an undisclosed amount to companies that had controlled the rights for 20 years. Hendrix died in 1970.
The 80th birthday of Frank Sinatra was celebrated over three days at Carnegie Hall in New York City. A visibly ailing Sinatra attends but does not perform. Meanwhile, in New York City, the Empire State Building is lit with blue lights in his honor.
62-year-old singer Charlie Rich died in Hammond, Louisiana of a blood clot in the lungs. Rich began as a Rockabilly artist for Sun Records in Memphis in 1958 and had hits with “Lonely Weekends” (#22 in 1960) and “Mohair Sam” (#21 in 1965). He gained wider success in 1973 when his ballads “Behind Closed Doors” and “The Most Beautiful Girl” crossed over from the Country charts into the Hot 100.

fires began burning out of control during the “Red Hot Chili Peppers” set at Woodstock ’99. Fans began looting the vendors and pelting police with bottles and fruit. Woodstock ’99 didn’t understand what the original Woodstock was about.
Actor Will Smith tops the Billboard Hot 100 with “Wild Wild West”, on which he simply rapped over Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish”. Despite its chart success, the song won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Original Song of 1999 and Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio later ranked it at #27 on his list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever.
The rapper Treach (Anthony Criss) from Naughty by Nature (“O.P.P.“) marries Pepa (Sandra Denton) of Salt-N-Pepa in a ceremony officiated by Reverend Run of Run-D.M.C., who says it’s the first time a rapper has married two rappers. Among the guests are Salt, Queen Latifah and Vivica A. Fox. The couple divorce in 2001, with Pepa alleging abuse.
Phil Collins married for the third time. The 48-year-old drummer wed marketing consultant Orianne Cevey in Lausanne, Switzerland. Guests at the wedding included Elton John, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.

Quebec singer-songwriter Georges Dor died of lung cancer at age 70. Dor fought to improve the quality of the French language used popularly in Quebec. His best known song was “La Manic.”

While staying at the TriBeCa Grand Hotel in Manhattan, New York, bodyguards for Mariah Carey heard “a commotion”. When they got into Carey’s hotel suite, they found that she had broken down into hysterics and had intentionally broken scores of dishes and glasses in the kitchenette. Carey suffered several cuts on her body and was checked into a hospital shortly after midnight on July 26 for “extreme exhaustion”.

Bad Beat singer Patrick Sherry died after a stage dive went wrong during a gig at the Warehouse in Leeds, England. Sherry lept towards the crowd at the end of the bands set and tried to grab a lighting rig from the ceiling but missed and hit the floor.
Dave Mustaine, lead singer of Megadeth, sued former bass guitarist David Ellefson in Superior Court in Los Angeles, claiming Ellefson used the group’s name without Mustaine’s permission in an advertisement for musical equipment.

Pete Doherty pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage after smashing a photographer’s camera. The 29-year-old lost his temper with news agency employee Catherine Mead when she followed him around Crewkerne, Somerset, in August 2007. Yeovil Magistrates’ Court heard how he grabbed the camera and broke the lens, he was ordered to pay £918.27 in compensation to Ms Mead.
Rapper 50 Cent was suing Taco Bell claiming the US fast food chain used his name and image without permission in an advertising campaign. New York court papers say the advert features the star being encouraged to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent. The rapper is accusing the chain of ‘diluting the value of his good name’. The advertisement is part of Taco Bell’s ‘Why Pay More’’ campaign, which promotes items for under a dollar.
69-year-old Connie Francis was admitted to Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s coronary care unit with dangerously high blood pressure. She was released a short time later.

Don McLean plead guilty to a number of charges related to a domestic violence incident in January, 2016. He was fined $3,000 in court costs, was ordered to have no contact with his now ex-wife and to undergo a mental health evaluation in the next sixty days. Just under a year later, the Knox County Court would dismiss the domestic violence assault charge.
Marni Nixon, a soprano singer who dubbed vocals for numerous stars of the silver screen, including Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and Natalie Wood in West Side Story, dies at age 86.
