Elvis Presley : Dade County Coliseum, Madison : June 24, 1977

Madison Wisconsin Police Detective Bruce Frey witnessed one of the strangest events of his career when he saw Elvis Presley jump out of his limo and stop two teenagers who were beating up a younger lad at a local gas station. Elvis said, “I’ll take you on.” Frey remembers; “They looked up at him, froze in mid-punch and the victim ran into the gas station.” The pair quickly apologized and Elvis got back into the limo and headed for his hotel room at the Sheraton.

Wisconsin Historical Markers: Elvis Presley Fight Scene

‘Elvis Madison 1977 – The Gas Station Incident’: Bruce Frey witnessed Elvis stopping a brawl at a Madison Gas Station in June of 1977 – the very last time Elvis would be on tour.
Kathy Westmoreland was on tour with Elvis in June 1977 and got to hear Elvis’ story first-hand about how he stopped the fight at the Madison Gas Station in June of 1977.
Thanks to Bruce Frey EIN has received permission from Kathy Westmoreland to tell her side of this famous story. It’s her version of what happened that night and helps explain how Bruce Frey happened to run into him because he went out a back gate and got ahead of everyone!

Elvis’ Madison Marker Damaged: As reported recently in the Journal Sentinel, the marker that shows where Elvis Presley in a karate stance stopped a fight in Madison in 1977 is now damaged.
As 40 years have passed, people sometimes use words like legend or myth about the time Elvis Presley jumped from his limousine at a Madison intersection, assumed a karate stance and halted a fight he spotted at a gas station.

When Elvis Presley, who rides a motorcycle in current film, ‘Roustabout’, learned co-star Barbara Stanwyck could ride a motorcycle, Elvis promptly hoisted the four-time Academy Award nominee aboard a motorcycle built for two and they were off in a cloud of dust to the amazement of everybody in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Elvis and Barbara Stanwyck in Thousand Oaks, California, March 20, 1964

Principal photography for ‘Roustabout’ started on March 20, 1964. On that day an article appeared in a Las Vegas newspaper that would hurt and haunt Elvis for the rest of his life.

‘Would you believe that Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole owe part of their current success to Elvis Presley?’ was the title of the piece that went on to say, ‘These two brilliant Shakespearean-trained actors, winning worldwide acclaim for their performances in ‘Becket’ might not have had the opportunity to star in the picture, were it not for Sir Swivel Hips’.

Quoting producer Hal Wallis, the article indicated that it was the profits from the commercially successful, light-hearted Elvis movies that made it possible for Wallis to fund the production of more ‘artistic pictures’. The article was picked up by the news services and printed throughout the country. For Elvis it confirmed his fears that he was never going to be taken seriously as an actor.

Janis Joplin started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with her version of the Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster song “Me And Bobby McGee.” Joplin, who was a lover and a friend of Kristofferson’s from the beginning of her career to her death, changed the sex and a few of the lyrics in her cover. Kristofferson states he did not write this song for her, but the song is associated with her – especially, he has said, in the line “Somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away.” Joplin died of a drug overdose the year before on 4th October aged 27.
At their own expense The Rolling Stones placed full page advertisements in all the UK’s music papers disclaiming any connection with the release of the Decca album ‘Stone Age’ saying ‘in our opinion the content is below the standard we try to keep.’

Elvis performed at the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee. Without preparations RCA had its mobile recording truck on hand to record this final show of the tour – and Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis was recorded.
He earned his third Grammy Award for this album’s performance of “How Great Thou Art“. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on July 15, 1999.
On March 17, 2014, close to the 40th anniversary of the concert, Sony/RCA Legacy re-released the album as a two-CD set.

Following his newfound success as a country music artist Jerry Lee Lewis made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry.  Although Opry officials had directed him to play only country music songs and to keep his comments clean, Lewis eventually defied instructions by playing his classic rock ‘n’ roll hits and declaring himself “the rock & rollin’, country & western, rhythm & blues singin’ motherf—–.”
January 20, 1974

Elvis put down a deposit of $75,000 on an impounded Boeing 707 but the deal fallsl through. The previous owner had been Robert Vesco, the fugitive financier who had fled to South America after allegedly embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars from international investment firms. Buying his plane would involve some complicated wrangling with the IRS. And Elvis was warned about another complication: If the plane ever landed in any of the countries Vesco was establishing a base in, there was every reason to believe that he might try to seize it.

In April Elvis buys a Convair 880 Jet recently taken out of service by Delta Airlines for the then-substantial sum of $250,000. With complete refurbishing the total exceeded $600,000. He immediately rechristened it the Lisa Marie.

After hearing Don Kinney, a Denver television newsman, joking on the air about Elvis’ generosity and telling he wanted a car too, Elvis bought him a Seville. Don Kinney contradicts this and tells his story.
Meanwhile the vacation in Denver wasn’t a great success and Jerry Schilling quit for good, telling Elvis that “friendship is more important than the job”.
Felton Jarvis had arranged for Elvis to record at Buss Cason’s new up-to-date Nashville studio, Creative Workshop. Felton was confident that Elvis would feel at home there. The band was Elvis’ own, plus Chip Young on guitar and Randy Cullers on percussion. But just hours before the scheduled start, Joe Esposito called to say Elvis had not yet left Memphis.
Elvis didn’t attend because he could not get Ginger Alden to accompany him according to Memphis Mafia Members while in Ginger Alden’s book, she puts it down to Elvis having a cold (but, given that that really helped during the American Sound Sessions in 1969…) the Jungle Room sessions would be Elvis last recording session.
RCA would have to record concerts in hopes of new songs.
