August 16, 1975

Peter Gabriel announced that he was leaving Genesis. The group auditioned more than 400 singers during the next 18 months before deciding that Phil Collins, who had been the drummer for Genesis since 1970, could front the band.

Noon rehearsals were held each day for three days in preparation for the Vegas opening.

August 16, 1976

August 16, 1977

12:00 midnight: After his 10:30 pm dentist’s appointment is completed, Elvis and girlfriend Ginger Alden return to Graceland.

Elvis as he enters Graceland in his Stutz Blackhawk around 12:30 a.m. on August 16, 1977

2:15 am: Elvis calls his doctor to request more painkillers, ostensibly because of pain engendered by the dentist trip. Elvis’ stepbrother Ricky Stanley drives to the all-night pharmacy at Baptist Memorial Hospital and returns with six Dilaudid pills.

4:00 am: Elvis wakes up first cousin Billy Smith and his wife, Jo, to request they play a game of racquetball with him. Presley, as usual, plays the game while barely moving, and playfully attempts to hit Billy with the ball. In doing so, Elvis manages to hit himself with his racquet, bruising his leg. The game is called off.

4:30 am: Elvis moves to a nearby piano and performs two unidentified gospel numbers and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.”

5:00 am: Elvis decides to turn in early (for him), going up to his bedroom with Ginger. He takes one of the pre-packaged packets of pills created by his doctor for twice-daily use.

7:00 am: Elvis takes a second pack of pills.

8:00 am: Still unable to sleep, Elvis asks for a third packet, which is brought to him by his aunt, Delta Mae Biggs.

9:30 am: Elvis takes the book he’s been reading, Frank Adams’ The Scientific Search For The Face Of Jesus, and goes into his bathroom, “Don’t fall asleep in there,” she says, knowing his propensity to nod off.

“Okay, I won’t,” he says.

Ginger, who Elvis gave a Tylenol 3 tablet, drops back to sleep.

-at some point, Elvis had ice cream and cookies and more Pills, with his Aunt Delta likely being the last person to see him alive.

1:30 pm: Ginger awakens and sees Elvis is still gone. When knocking on the bathroom door produces no reply, she enters and finds his lifeless body on the floor in front of the toilet.

She calls downstairs for help and Nancy Rook, Graceland Maid answers and dispatches Elvis associates Al Strada and Joe Esposito, who arrive in the bathroom and they call the fire department. An ambulance is dispatched. Daughter Lisa Marie and father Vernon arrive in the bathroom, but Lisa Marie is quickly removed from the scene.

2:56 pm: Elvis Presley arrives at the Baptist Medical Center in Memphis.

3:00 pm: Elvis is pronounced dead.

4:00 pm: On the steps of Graceland, heartbroken father Vernon Presley tells the assembled reporters: “My son is dead.”

Vernon Presley Talks to the Media – August 16, 1977

His autopsy was performed at 7:00 p.m.  The death was announced as the autopsy was being carried out: The official coroner’s report listed “cardiac arrhythmia” as the cause of Presley’s death, (which only means the heart stopped and not why) but the real cause of death: a cocktail of ten prescribed drugs, taken together in doses no doctor should ever prescribe to a person with terminal illness, which Elvis did not have. The pills he took were for symptom management: pain and sleep mostly, nothing for an actual medical condition.

Romances: Ginger Alden

Also on Memphis Mafia duty during the final hours were Stepbrothers David E. Stanley and Rick Stanley. One delivered pill packs and the other was smoking pot with a pal in the pool table room, off the TV room.

The staff of television newsrooms considered Elvis’ death a late-breaking story. There was not enough time for TV reporters who had been sent to Memphis to file stories for the evening news. Executives had to decide quickly what film footage they could use from their files and where to place the story in relation to the other news of the day. NBC-TV not only rewrote their news lineup to lead off with the story of Elvis’ death, but the network also made immediate plans to delay The Tonight Show and put together a late-night news documentary. David Brinkley, a national news anchor for NBC at the time, opened his broadcast with three minutes devoted to Elvis’ sudden death. ABC-TV also decided to lead with the Presley story.

When they learned that NBC would be doing a late-night news special about the significance of Elvis Presley to American music, ABC announced that they would also air a half-hour documentary.

CBS did not follow suit, however. The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, featuring the most respected man in broadcasting at that time, had led the news program ratings for more than a decade. CBS executives chose not to open the evening broadcast with the Presley story. Arbitron’s records indicate that when millions of viewers realized this they immediately switched the channel to another network.

The CBS decision not to lead with Elvis’ death gave the CBS Evening News its lowest ratings in years. (For the record, Roger Mudd was substituting for Walter Cronkite that evening.) CBS devoted only 70 seconds to its story on Elvis, placing it after a lengthy segment on the Panama Canal. The producer for that evening’s news was vehemently opposed to leading off with Elvis’ death, in spite of other members of the CBS programming staff suggesting it repeatedly. Interviewed later, the producer agreed that he was out of sync with the national consciousness. Two days later, CBS tried to save face by putting together a documentary on Elvis.

At 4.35 Elvis flew to Detroit.

ROLLS WHEN THEY ROCK
ELVIS PRESLEY FLEES TO CAR AFTER 20 MINUTES ON STAGE

Surge of Teen-Agers Convinces Guitarist It Isn’t Safe to Stay and Finish His Song.
By Bill Moore (A Member of the Star’s Staff)

Elvis Presley, the males and modern version of what some gay old blades may remember as the sideshow dancer, lasted just 20 minutes on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium Arena last night before the mob started after him.
Elvis fought his way clear of the hysterical swarm of teen-age girls that broke through he police lines, then he jumped into a motor car parked in the corridor backstage and was off like a frightened gazelle. He left in the middle of a note – if the act he had been performing could be called singing.
Heartbreak at Exit.
The girls rushed the back exit, milled around in the corridor and were finally pushed back by police. But Elvis was gone. There wasn’t much left to do but to move out the crowd.
Elvis, who is 21, is billed as the nation’s only atomic-powered singer. Some of the adults in the audience of 2500 commented that if this is the use to be made of atomic power, the idea of splitting the atom was the saddest mistake the world has made.
Between gyrations, Elvis jigs across the stage dragging the microphone after him leaning at almost horizontal angles. He whangs the daylights out of a guitar. He shouts and moans. But the Presley voice – and there may be some who will still insist he has one – is lost on the screams of the girl enthusiasts.

A Few Boys in Crowd.
Elvis took the stage at 9:30 o’clock, wearing a fox-hunt scarlet coat and black pants. Several hundred girls, apparently ranging in age from 12 to 17 for the most part, left their seats and made the big rush forward. There were a few teen-age boys in the crowd which barged up to be within almost touching distance, but it was the girls who touched off the sustained pandemonium that followed. One girl got through before Elvis had twanged his first note on the guitar. Sobbing and shrieking she was led off the stage by a patrolman. Then Elvis went into his act. The noise hit a higher pitch. His gyrations got looser and faster.
Problem for Police.
Police gathered on the stage. Others strode at a sort of a dog trot around the sides, attempting to herd the girls back – gently but just sort of firmly. But police have a rough time of it when the opposition is composed of young young girls caught up in such an emotional dither. The police had a choice of getting rough or just letting things take their course. They chose not to get rough.
Elvis got through four or five songs before the roof finally fell in. A girl got past the police, bounced up on the stage, and hugged and kissed her panting crocodile. A policeman got her off again, but the signal for the avalanche was on.
As the cool cats would say, they were determined to get really with him. They poured over the front and over the sides of the stage. They surrounded their almost prostrated hero, reaching for buttons, a piece of his shirt, a lock of his ducktail or anything else they could grab. The Presley gyrations stopped suddenly. He was immobilized.

Cats at His Heels.
Then he broke out and fled, a couple of steps ahead of his pursuers. Hours later some of the girls were reported groping aimlessly through the lobbies of the downtown hotels, calling for Elvis. It is reported that the next Presley stop is Detroit. An inspector for the welfare department said when it was all over that he hoped the entertainer would keep going until he reached a point from which his voice, if heard at all, will be the faintest of echoes – some spot, say, like Outer Mongolia.
The crowd was described by Harry Peebles, operator of a booking agency at Wichita, as one of the smallest Elvis ever has drawn. Peebles said too many students were home boning up for high school final examinations.
Calm Before Storm.
The performance started at 8:10 o’clock and before the Presley appearance on the stage it was confined to clean type of singing and comedy. The other members of his troupe played and sang everything form swing stuff to Dixieland. There was a 6-piece band, a girl singer, a comedian, a lyric tenor, and a men’s quartet. Their part of the show was entertainment. It was received with enthusiasm, but the enthusiasm was within bounds.
An adult who has an important role in show business here lingered in the auditorium after the tumult and shouting had died away. He was asked for his reaction to the Presley performance. He did not speak. He merely pressed two fingers to his nose.

Elvis Presley Letters from Omaha in 1956 – Elvis History Blog

Marjorie Howe’s concert review, published in theJournal on May 24, 1956. The headline read, “Teenagers Like Presley’s Antics—But Others Do Not!” Miss Howe clearly was in the latter group. “His performance was the most disgusting exhibition this reporter has ever seen,” she declared. “Elvis Presley is the male counterpart of a hoochee-koochee dancer in a burlesque show. The writhing goes on while Presley is singing Blue Suede Shoes or Hound Dog, but his frenzied singing and guitar strumming are only incidental to the act. In fact, the singing can barely be heard above the crowd noise for every paroxysm brings a fresh outbreak of shrieks from the audience.”

Howe took time off from her criticism of Elvis’s act to censure the singer’s appearance. “He has a sulkey look and his infrequent smile is almost surly,” she observed. She added (Elvis fans, take a deep breath now), “He wears long sideburns and is beginning to get fat.”

The Military Service Disruption

May 24, 1958

Elvis Presley’s single “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck” hit #3 in the U.S. and U.K.

It was Presley’s 6th number-one hit in the American R&B Charts, but peaked at #2 on the American Pop and #3 Country Charts; this single notable for breaking a string of ten consecutive number 1 hits that Presley achieved in an astonishing two years – and certainly being drafted did not help, and that career momentum was lost; with the potential later squandered.

“Doncha’ Think It’s Time” managed #21 on the Hot and 10 RnB charts.

He didn’t have to sing. All he had to do was stand there and move something – a finger, a leg, a shake of the head. It was all the same. Every time he struck a different pose, the flashbulbs and the screams would start again.

But Elvis did sing, and it was his old stuff that brought the greatest response – “Treat Me Like a Fool,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” and more.

Sonny West, one of the original members of Elvis Presley’s Memphis Mafia, died of lung cancer at the age of 79. Joining Elvis in 1960, he was abruptly fired, along with his cousin Red and bodyguard Dave Hebler, in 1976 without explanation. The following year he co-authored the book Elvis, What Happened?.

Image result for elvis what happened

Sonny West was one of the three bodyguards manipulated by Steve Dunleavy, who worked for Rupert Murdoch in the original Elvis expose book – Dee Stanley and her three sons would poison pen “Elvis We Love You Tender” and other volumes blaming Elvis for their Mother leaving their father; and the more infamous Albert Goldman Elvis in 1984, which Lamar Fike was duped for. Sonny West wrote a later balanced book.

Last year that Sonny West was confirmed to have stage 4 lung cancer – although he had been battling with serious medical issues over the last 5 years.

Sonny West told EIN, “Elvis was a substantial part of my life, and one that I truly enjoyed living. I didn’t handle the news of Elvis’ death well at all. I was devastated and just fell apart. – Elvis should never had died so young. Why should someone so talented, with so much still to offer the world in music and movies have to die so early in his life with so much left to give. If that old saying, “only the good die young” is true. Elvis is that personified.
Elvis knew there was something special about him being who and what he was. He just didn’t know what or why. But I am sure he, just as the rest of us, never expected it to be this overwhelming, and for this long with no end in sight. It is truly something very special.”

“The Negro disk jockey, once considered a rarity on the nation’s airwaves, has become almost commonplace in this day and age,” Ellis Waters stated today in the New Negro men’s magazine, Duke. The writer continued: “There are now more than 500 Negro platter spinners on the air across the nation.” He described disc jockeying as the “newest Negro industry,” a $250 million annual business.

RCA didn’t want Rocker Elvis to record gospel music – and who would buy songs they already knew and most likely sang? Ed Sullivan had a rare secular high culture and pop culture variety show and Elvis Presley sang the only gospel song of that Show of Show’s run. Elvis Presley should be credited for creating a Christian Music industry and as a result, Christian rock – the least and weakest of the genre formats.

Elvis Presley sang the blues as country and country as blues, with the upbeat message of getting paid and laid, delivered with a gospel fervor. This was his sacred songbook, that balanced his more profane performances. Other rockers lurched between religion and rock, Elvis, just combined them all.

Elvis Presley’s “Peace In The Valley” hit #39 in the U.S, reaching reached number three on the short-lived Billboard EP chart, and number three on the album chart, and number 39 on the singles chart.

He recalls asking, “Is Elvis home?” Answer: “No, Elvis isn’t home, he’s in Lake Tahoe.” Springsteen attempted to impress the guards by saying he was a recording star and had recently made the covers of TIME and Newsweek, as he was politely escorted to the street.

Once again Elvis delayed his departure to Los Angeles.
After recently spending a considerable amount of time horseback riding, Elvis Presley delayed an already-postponed trip to Hollywood to begin filming his 25th film, “Clambake. He complained about painful saddle sores. Dr. Nichopoulos came out to the ranch to examine him. There were some prescriptions and the doctor even agreed to call the Colonel to explain the problem. Dr. Nichopoulos and Elvis hit it off almost from the start and this was the beginning of a long-standing relationship, both personal and professional.

The album originally titled “Beatles Again,” a compilation (conceived by Allen Klein and Apple, not Capitol Records) of non-albumBeatles singles and B-sides, was released in North America as “Hey Jude,” to promote the inclusion of the song that led off side two. Klein authorized release of the album to keep Beatles record sales active during post-production of the delayed “Let It Be” album. The front and back cover pictures on the “Hey Jude” album were taken at the last Beatles photo session on August 22, 1969 at John Lennon’s new 72-acre estate, Tittenhurst Park.
The Astrodome was much bigger than Vegas Showrooms – Elvis became aware from the first moments of rehearsal in Houston, that the sound system was hopeless and the band would not be able to hear itself. “Don’t fight it”, he said to Glen D. Hardin. “Just go ahead and play.”

At Universal and Radio Recorders studios in Hollywood, a month after they recorded “Help Me, Ronda” for issue on an album, the Beach Boys re-recorded the song for release as a single. For the first time, other than on their Christmas album, guitarist Al Jardine sang lead. The Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew provided much of the instrumentation, along with Carl Wilson on guitar and Brian Wilson on acoustic piano and Hammond B-3 organ. Backing vocals were by Mike Love, Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson.

At the last minute there was a soundtrack session set up for Elvis’ new film, Harum Scarum. Due to the hurried manner in which the session was scheduled, Elvis’ regular accompanists were not available ant their places were taken by Charlie McCoy on guitar, Henry Strzelecki on bass and Kenny Buttrey on drums. They were joined by Rufus Long and Ralph Strobel on flute and oboe in order to lend A middle Eastern touch to the soundtrack.
This was Elvis’ first visit to a recording studio in 8 months and his distraction and disaffection with the material was obvious. He broke off at 3.30 a.m. after only 4 hours in which he did 38 dreary takes of Shake That Tambourine.
