U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 into law, authorizing $25 billion for the construction of 41,000 miles of coast-to-coast Interstate freeways.

Elvis Presley’s taxes probably funded the highways, as much as needing to ship his product to market.

Elvis arrives for Steve Allen show rehearsals –
in the era of film photography, he was the most photographed person; because in the 1950s,
was the first time, professional equipment became a consumer product

In New York, Elvis was fitted for a tux for the the Steve Allen Show.

Then there was Steve Allen Show rehearsals. Skitch Henderson was NBC-TV’s musical conductor from 1951 to 1966, as well as The Steve Allen Show’s bandleader during its run on Sunday nights in 1956-60.

The Charlotte Observer reported the following incident in its June 29, 1956, edition. It seems Elvis was sitting in his “baby blue” limousine after his Thursday night show in Charleston, South Carolina, when a girl reporter for The News and Courier approached his car to take a picture. Apparently, she was after a closeup. She was so close that Elvis was able to stick his head out and bite her hand.

Many girls probably would have enjoyed being bitten by Elvis. This reporter was not one of them. “Hey, you big bruiser, what’s the idea?” she asked him. “You trying to make like Marlon Brando or something.”

“I was only being friendly, like a little puppy dog,” Elvis responded.

The reporter told Elvis it was the first time anyone had ever bitten her as a sign of friendship. “Lady, if you want to get ahead, you gotta be different,” explained Elvis. It was a different era. No lawsuit was filed.

James Brown’s first album, Live at the Apollo, debuted on the pop charts, eventually rising to #2. Despite enormous chart success, he never had a #1 pop album of forty-nine albums hit the pop charts through 1988.  Live would remain his all-time biggest success and would be considered a milestone in the development of live albums for years to come.

Del Shannon‘s cover version of the Beatles’ “From Me To You” became the first song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney to appear on the American charts, where it would stay for four weeks, reaching #77. The Beatles’ rendition climbed only to #116. The title of the song was inspired from a letters column called From You To Us that ran in the popular British music newspaper, The New Musical Express.

1985

David Bowie and Mick Jagger recorded a version of the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas 1964 hit ‘Dancing In The Street.’ for the forthcoming Live Aid fundraising event. The single went on to become a No.1 UK hit. The original plan was to perform a track together live, with Bowie performing at Wembley Stadium and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium, until it was realized that the satellite link-up would cause a half-second delay that would make this impossible unless either Bowie or Jagger mimed their contribution, something neither artist was willing to do.

1991

Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, En Vogue, Levert, and Dianne Reeves, among others, performed on the Celebrate the Soul of American Music  TV show.

Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie filed for divorce from her fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, just months after the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary the previous January. Lisa Marie had previously been wed to Danny Keough from 1988 until 1994, Michael Jackson from 1994 to 1999 and to actor Nicolas Cage from 2002 to 2004.

The Beatles released the album “Yesterday and Today” with the controversial “butcher” cover, showing the Beatles smiling amongst decapitated baby dolls. The original photo became a huge publicity issue for Capitol Records. It was quickly replaced by a more conventional cover, glued over the old one and resulting in one of the band’s most prized collectibles.  At the time, the Beatles defended the use of the butcher photograph. John Lennon said it was “as relevant as Vietnam” and Paul McCartney said that their critics were “soft.” Ringo Starr called it a commentary on how Capitol “butchered” their original albums. George Harrison said he thought the whole idea “was gross, and I also thought it was stupid. Sometimes we all did stupid things thinking it was cool and hip when it was naïve and dumb; and that was one of them.” “Yesterday and Today” was the only Beatles record to lose money for Capitol.

At RCA Studio B in Nashville, overdubs completed the Elvis Presley track “If Every Day Was Like Christmas.” The instrumental backing had been recorded on June 10 and Elvis’ vocal was added on June 12.

When asked what type of music he sings, Presley said it was “a little rock and roll and a little hillbilly.” Asked how the frenzied reaction by teenage girls affected him, Presley said he thought it was “great, makes you want to kill yourself to do everything you can to please them.”
