Jerry Lee Lewis makes his first appearance on The Steve Allen Show, performing “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. After the program airs, sales of the record soar, pushing it to #3 on the Billboard pop chart and #1 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Elvis appeared briefly on stage with Danny Thomas at Thomas’ Shower of Stars to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital at Russwood Park in Memphis.

The show included movie stars Jane Russell and Susan Hayward, country singer Ferlin Huskey, pop singer Roberta Sherwood and comedian Lou Costello.

The Who’s album Tommy reached the Top 10 on this date, four weeks after its release.

Elvis Presley had the best selling single in America with the Mac Davis written “In The Ghetto”. The last time The King had topped the Cashbox chart was in December, 1962, with “Return To Sender”. The song was Presley’s first Top 10 hit in the US in four years, peaking at number 3, and his first UK Top 10 hit in three years, peaking at No. 2. It hit No. 1 on Cashbox. It was a number-one hit in West Germany, Ireland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.

The album “Elvis – That’s The Way It Is” was certified gold by the RIAA, it would peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. On June 11, 2000, a three-disc Special Edition was released by BMG. The collectors’ label Follow That Dream released special editions of the album in 2008, 2009 in 2012. While Sony released an 8 CD with 2 DVD set in 2014.

The #1 R&B song was “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” by the S.O.S. Band.

Paul McCartney & Wings wrestled the top spot away from Lipps, Inc. as “Coming Up” beat out “Funkytown”.  Bette Midler climbed to #3 with “The Rose” and Billy Joel moved up with “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me”.  The competition was fierce so Bob Seger had to remain at 5 with “Against The Wind”.  The rest of the Top 10:  “Little Jeannie” from Elton John, Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away” at #7, Ambrosia fell to #8 with their great song “Biggest Part Of Me”, the Spinners entered the Top 10 with their medley of “Cupid” and “I’ve Loved You For A Long Time” and Michael Jackson didn’t budge from #10 with “She’s Out Of My Life”.

Appearing an anti-apartheid concert at Clapham Common in London: were Sting, Boy George, Elvis Costello, Sade,  Hugh Masekela and Peter Gabriel, among others. Nearly a quarter of a million people attended.

Wham! were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their fourth and final UK No.1 ‘The Edge Of Heaven’. Also on this day Wham! played their farewell concert in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, London.

Madonna debuted with her single “Papa Don’t Preach” at #42.

Billy Ocean took over at #1 on the R&B chart with “There’ll Be Sad Songs”.

Howard Jones reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart with “No One Is To Blame”.

Another great Top 10 on this date as Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle were #1 for the third week with “On My Own”.  Billy Ocean’s “There’ll Be Sad Songs” remained at 2 and the Jets came in third with “Crush On You”.  Simply Red’s great song “Holding Back The Years” moved from 8 to 4, leapfrogging Howard Jones, who nonetheless moved up with “No One Is To Blame”.  The rest of the Top 10:  El DeBarge with “Who’s Johnny”, George Michael’s “A Different Corner” stuck at 7, Genesis roared from 17 to 8 with “Invisible Touch”, “Nasty” by Janet Jackson entered the Top 10 as did Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”.

the 80s saw a bizarre religious metal trend. Pat Boone being the almost worst example: Stryper reeased the album In God We Trust.

1990

Tina Turner became the first woman and only the second rock ‘n’ roll act (Pink Floyd being the other) to perform at the Palace of Versailles in France.

Paul McCartney performed the John Lennon songs “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Help!” and “Give Peace A Chance” for the first time in public at a concert at King’s Dock in Liverpool, England.

1991

Paul McCartney debuted his “Liverpool Oratorio” at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool.

1993

Wilson Pickett pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

The Elvis Presley five-CD boxed set “The King Of Rock’n’Roll – The Complete 60’s Masters” hit #159 in the U.S.

It was certified Gold by the RIAA on November 30, 1993, and Platinum on January 6, 2004.

David Lee Roth began a solo tour in Los Angeles.

Burt Bacharach was at the Royal Albert Hall in London.  He was joined onstage by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher for the song “This Guy’s In Love With You”.

Def Leppard kicked off the North American leg of their 133-date Slang world tour in Ohio.

1997

Puff Daddy and Faith Evans started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘I’ll Be Missing You’. Released in memory of fellow Bad Boy Records artist Notorious B.I.G. who was murdered on March 9, 1997. The song sampled the melody of The Police hit ‘Every Breath You Take’.

The Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of The Moon spent its 1056th week on the US album chart. It was rumoured at the time that if the album was played while watching The Wizard of Oz movie, and started exactly when the MGM lion roared the third time during the movie’s intro, very interesting connections could be made between the two.

The Backstreet Boys debuted at #24 with their single “Quit Playing Games With My Heart”.

Radiohead went to number one on the UK album chart with their third album, OK Computer. The record only made it to 21 on the US chart.

Radiohead, the Chemical Brothers and Neneh Cherry performed on day two of the Glastonbury Festival in England.

Jimmie Rodgers had successful brain surgery in Hot Springs, Arkansas to remove the steel plate that had been inserted 40 years previous. Doctors reported that his skull had completely regenerated.

Jay-Z, Crowded House, Amy Winehouse, James Blunt and the Raconteurs performed on the second day of the Glastonbury Festival in England.

2009

Three days after his death Michael Jackson was at No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Number Ones’. The Essential Michael Jackson went to No.1 the following week for seven weeks.

Julien’s Auctions, which ran an auction at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, where a Los Angeles woman paid $190,000 for the Swarovski-crystal-studded glove that Michael Jackson wore on his 1984 Victory Tour,  a Jimi Hendrix Fender guitar for $180,000, Prince’s “Purple Rain” handwritten lyrics, which sold for $66,000, and an Elvis Presley shirt worn in 1956 on The Milton Berle Show, which fetched $61,200.

Bill Aucoin, who, as KISS‘s manager, turned four young New York City kids into a Rock group that would sell more than 100 million albums, died from complications of prostate cancer at the age of 66. Aucoin not only got them their first recording contract, he ferociously marketed their merchandise which included makeup, a KISS comic book and even a pinball machine.

2016

Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley’s longtime guitarist died at his home in Nashville, aged 84. Moore had been in poor health in recent months. He formed the Starlite Wrangers with bassist Bill Black and in 1954, Sun Records impresario Sam Phillips paired Moore with a teenaged Elvis Presley. Together, along with Black, they recorded Presley’s first single, ‘That’s All Right (Mama).’ The recording session was only meant to be an audition; instead, the trio made music history.
