In Paris, France, 32 year old Adolphe Sax, a Belgian musician and musical instrument designer, patents the saxophone. Sax continued to make instruments throughout his life, however, rival instrument makers challenged the legitimacy of his patents and initiated a campaign of litigation against him and his company, driving him into bankruptcy twice, in 1856 and 1873.

The Surfaris‘ “Wipe Out” is released in the US, where it will enter the Billboard Hot 100 two weeks later and reach #2 by mid-August. The record would also reach #5 in the UK. The song would be re-issued in 1966 and climb to #16 on the Billboard Top 40 and again in 1970 when it failed to chart.

In the U.K., the #1 song was “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones.

The Otis Redding album Dock Of The Bay went to No.1 Album in the UK. The posthumously released album, and his sixth studio album contained a number of singles and B-sides dating back to 1965 and one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit (Sittin’ On The Dock) Of The Bay.

“This Guy’s In Love with You” by Herb Alpert became the new #1 song, ending a three week run by “Mrs. Robinson” from Simon & Garfunkel.  That classic dropped to 3 and moving up to 2 was “MacArthur Park” from actor Richard Harris.  The Ohio Express was singing about “Yummy Yummy Yummy” at #4 while Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 had their great sound at #5 with “The Look of Love”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Tommy James & the Shondells with “Mony Mony”, Aretha Franklin’s “Think” at #7, Merrilee Rush moved into the Top 10 with “Angel of the Morning”, Archie Bell & the Drells had #9–“Tighten Up” and Friend and Lover had a Top 10 song with “Reach Out of the Darkness”.

American singer, actress, Judy Garland, died of a barbiturate overdose aged 47, she was found on the floor of her rented Chelsea home, in London, UK. Made more than two dozen films, played Dorothy in the 1939 film ‘Wizard Of Oz’, sang ‘Over The Rainbow’ in the film, (voted the ‘Song Of The Century’ in a 2001 poll published in America). 1961 US No.1 comeback album ‘Judy At Carnegie Hall’.

The second Glastonbury Festival in England took place. Held over 5 days to coincide with the summer solstice, (the weather was, for a British ‘summer’ very good). Acts who appeared included: Melanie, Quintessence, David Bowie, The Edgar Broughton Band, Pink Fairies, Terry Reid – with David Lyndley and Linda Lewis, Gong, Hawkwind, Arthur Brown, Brinsley Schwarz, Fairport Convention, Family and Traffic. Over 7,000 fans attended the event.

Joni Mitchell released her fourth studio album Blue. The album is now generally regarded by music critics as one of the greatest albums of all time. In July 2017, Blue was chosen by NPR as the greatest album of all time made by a woman.

RCA released “I’m Leaving/Heart of Rome” I’m Leaving – In the United States “I’m Leavin'” reached number 36 on Billboard Hot 100 for the week of August 21, 1971.[3] In the UK Singles Chart, it reached number 23 for the week of October 2, 1971  Heart of Rome – it reached #23 in the UK and #83 in Australia.

Don McLean had his second UK No.1 single with the Roy Orbison song ‘Crying’. The song had been a No.2 US hit for Orbison in July 1961. In 1987, Orbison re-recorded the song as a duet with k.d. lang as part of the soundtrack for the motion picture, Hiding Out. Their collaboration won the Grammy Award.


Mark Chapman pleaded guilty to the charge of murdering John Lennon in 1980. He was later sentenced to 20 years to life. The most hated man in Rock ‘n’ Roll history has been denied parole nine times and as of 2020 was still incarcerated where he belongs.

Born in the U.S.A. was still only down to #5 after 53 weeks on the album chart.  The blockbuster from Bruce Springsteen had been in the Top 10 every one of those 53 weeks.


Los Lobos released their remake of the Richie Valens hit “La Bamba”.


Jesse Ed Davis, popular session guitarist with John Lennon, Eric Clapton, the Monkees, Steve Miller, Jackson Browne and Harry Nilsson, died from heroin in Venice, California at the age of 43.


Kripp Johnson, a founding member of the Del-Vikings, died of cancer at the age of 57. One of the first racially-integrated Rock ‘n’ Roll groups, the Doo Wop quintet had two Top 10 hits in 1957, “Come Go With Me” and “Whispering Bells”.

Ry Cooder and David Lindley, The Cure, Happy Mondays, Sinead O’Connor, Deacon Blue, De La Soul, Adamski, Blue Aeroplanes, Julian Cope, Del Amitri, Jesus Jones, James and The Pale Saints all appeared on the first day of this years Glastonbury Festival. A three day ticket cost £38.

Three members of M.C. Hammer’s tour crew were wounded in a drive in shooting incident, three days later Joseph Mack, a dancer in Hammer’s entourage was shot on stage during a concert in Nevada.


The brother of singer Diana Ross, Arthur Ross and his wife were murdered by suffocation in the basement of their rented Detroit home. The badly decomposed bodies were discovered after neighbors complained of a foul odor coming from the house. Two men were later charged with murder and robbery. Arthur Ross had written songs for Marvin Gaye, The Miracles and Madonna.

The “Elvis: ’68 Comeback Special – Deluxe Edition DVD” and “Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii – Deluxe Edition DVD” sets were released in North America.


Coldplay went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Viva La Vida’, their first UK No.1. History was made by this single, as it had no physical CD-single release in the UK, being available by internet download only. The song won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 2009.

The Eagles appeared at the Canada Inn in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

It was reported in the Irish press that Bono’s wandering peahen was causing havoc for some south Dublin residents. The peahen the less spectacular-coloured female partner to a male peacock had arrived in the Ard Mhuire housing estate in Killiney near to where the singer lived. One newspaper ran the headline: “Bono’s cock drives me nuts”. Local woman Susan McKeon said she first noticed the bird at night. “It had a tiny head and a huge body. It was actually quite ugly but I don’t think it’s fully grown.”2012

MP Andrew Turner called for a review of procedures after thousands of rock fans were delayed for hours heading to the Isle of Wight Festival. After heavy rain cars were unable to park on waterlogged fields – leading to gridlock as about 55,000 people headed to the site. Some fans were stuck in traffic for up to 16 hours on the way to the festival. Elbow, Lana Del Rey, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam all appeared at this year’s festival.

The crypt in which Elvis Presley was first buried was withdrawn from a Los Angeles auction after more than 10,000 fans protested it should be kept as a shrine. Presley was temporarily interred for two months after he died before being reburied at his Graceland home as well as Gladys Presley. Graceland was re-zoned for a small family cemetery plot – with Vernon Presley being third and his mother, Minnie Mae Presley being the last burial.


‘Blurred Lines’ by Robin Thicke started a 13 week run at No.1 on the US singles chart. Featuring American rapper T.I. and American singer and producer Pharrell, the video was made in two versions; the first video features models Emily Ratajkowski, Jessi M’Bengue, and Elle Evans being topless, the second features them covered. The topless version of the video was removed from YouTube for violating the site’s terms of service regarding nudity, though it was later restored, but flagged as inappropriate. ‘Blurred Lines” peaked at No.1 in 14 countries.


Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant told a court hearing the ‘Stairway To Heaven’copyright dispute that he had a dim memory of the time the song was written. Plant also said he could not remember meeting the band Spirit, who claimed the band stole their guitar riff for Stairway to Heaven in the 1970s. “I don’t have a recollection of almost anyone I’ve hung out with,” Plant said, causing roars of laughter in the court. The case was brought on behalf of Spirit’s late guitarist, Randy Wolfe. His estate claimed the opening riff of the 1968 song Taurus is fundamentally the same as the iconic opening bars of Stairway to Heaven.


“The Beach Boys With the Royal Philharmonic” topped both the Billboard Classical Albums and Classical Crossover Albums charts. The album blends The Beach Boys‘ original recordings of such hits as “California Girls”, “Kokomo” and “Good Vibrations” with new orchestral accompaniment from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Elvis Macrame Belt Sells for $298,000!: At the recent Julien’s ‘Music Icons 2020 Auction’ Elvis memorabilia sold very well with the biggest surprise being Elvis’ ivory macrame belt with accented reflective stones selling for $298,000 – after 32 bids – and for nearly 10 times its expected price.

Other notable Elvis items that sold were
– A pair of black western trousers with beige fringe on the sides, worn by Elvis in his role as Johnny in Frankie and Johnny (UA, 1966). (Shown below) Estimate US$6000 – Winning Bid $11,875

 The OWL metal decoration buckle. The back of the buckle has handwritten “Elvis LR” from one of Presley’s famous suits worn on stage –  Winning Bid $5,120
– A 1966 Chevrolet Impala which Elvis later decided to gift it to Gary Pepper, president of Presley’s fan club –  Winning Bid $62,500
– 14K yellow gold TCB necklace with full-cut round diamonds Winning bid $34,375

– A sterling silver cross pendant with turquoise stone inlay  Estimate $6,000 Winning Bid $11,520
–  A 1977 Silverado pickup truck was purchased on Christmas Eve 1976 by Presley. He eventually gave it to his father, Vernon Presley. Winning bid $41,600.

The main item featured at the auction however was Kurt Cobain‘s ‘MTV Unplugged’ guitar which sold for a sky-high $6 million. The 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played in the band’s rare acoustic performance on November 18, 1993, approximately five months before his death, Cobain chose this guitar to paint what Rolling Stone called “his last self-portrait.” The guitar was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones.

Also a custom guitar played by Prince at the height of his stardom in the 1980s and 1990s sold for $563,500 around three times the estimate. Prince played the blindingly blue guitar with the artist’s “love” symbol on its neck on his 1984 Purple Rain tour, and it also appeared on the classic albums Lovesexy and Sign O’ The Times. He used it into the early 1990s.
