The Beatles arrived in Adelaide, Australia and were greeted by an estimated 250,000 fans, (the biggest welcome the band would ever receive), who lined the ten mile route from the airport to the city centre.

Girl Happy pre-production – Elvis didn’t report at the arranged session time of 7.00 p.m. and the band was dismissed at 10.40 p.m. after completing several backing tracks.

It’s described as a musical written by Phillip Shuken no other details, except that filming will begin this month at MGM s Culver City studios. We can’t help wondering if the story is related to that of an earlier “Speedway,” also produced by MGM, back there in 1929, and filmed largely in Indianapolis, with William Haines and Anita Page starring

Elvis Presley‘s 27th movie, “Speedway,” co-starring Nancy Sinatra, Bill Bixby, Gale Gordon, William Schallert, and Poncie Ponce, premiered in Charlotte, North Carolina, where it was filmed.

Elvis continued with the rehearsals at Binder-Howe Productions office throughout the week and the weekend.

Elvis Presley’s single “Life/Only Believe” hit #53 in the U.S. The single release had a seven-week stay on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, peaking at #53. It reached #8 on the Easy Listening chart and #34 on the Country Chart. Both songs were from the upcoming album Love Letters from Elvis.

A dozen of Canada’s top songwriters were honored in Vancouver for writing songs that had been played on Canadian radio at least 100,000 times since 1965. Gene MacLellan won three of the awards from the Performing Rights Organization of Canada, including one for writing the Anne Murray hit, “Snowbird”. The others were for “Put Your Hand in the Hand” and “The Call”. Burton Cummings also won three awards for “Stand Tall”, “Break It to Them Gently” and “These Eyes”.

Graceland opened the Elvis Presley Autoland Museum, which contained over 20 cars owned by Presley, including his famous Pink Cadillac, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Stutz Blackhawks, a 1975 Dino Ferrari, a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, and the red MG that Elvis drove in the film Blue Hawaii.

1992

Singer/vegetarian k.d. lang cancelled a show in Owen Sound, Ontario after local beef farmers threatened to block the parking lot with farm vehicles and tractor-trailer rigs. She had upset the cattlemen by appearing in an advertising campaign that proclaimed “Meat Stinks.”

Canada Post issued postage stamps honoring Canadian singers Paul Anka, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Anne Murray.

Amy Winehouse performed an exclusive gig at a Moscow art gallery for Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich and his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova. It was reported that the singer was paid £1m for the gig at the launch of The Garage gallery, which has been set up by Ms Zhukova.

2009

The switch from analog to digital TV transmission in the U.S. was completed.
