Frankie and Johnny

May 28, 1966

Elvis Presley’s 25th LP – soundtrack album “Frankie and Johnny” peaked at #20 in the U.S.; and much later was certified Gold and Platinum on January 6, 2004

During the 1970s, Pickwick Records had leased several of Presley’s recordings from RCA and reissued the soundtrack album in 1976 with a new cover showing a 1970s-era image of Presley and the title slightly amended to Frankie & Johnny. The running order of the tracks was altered and three songs from the original album were omitted, and it was the only soundtrack to be reissued in this way. It did not chart on the Billboard 200.

This oddity remained in print for several years and when, following Presley’s death in August 1977, RCA reissued all of his albums, the agreement between RCA and Pickwick prohibited RCA from reissuing the original, complete soundtrack album in the US for several years due to the existence of this version. The original Frankie and Johnny soundtrack album was reissued in Canada and elsewhere however. Not until 2010 would the complete original Frankie and Johnny soundtrack be widely available in the United States again.

In 2003 Frankie and Johnny was reissued on the Follow That Dream label in a special edition that contained the original album tracks along with numerous alternate takes

Elvis went into the studio again, but without the Imperials his spirit to record was lacking. Only 2 songs were completed between 7.oo and 10.00 p.m.

Iowans Ready To See Elvis
Russ Smith, Waterloo Courier, May 30, 1976

AMES – After 20 some years plus one more hour Elvis came Ames Friday evening and 4,500 Iowans were ready. Man, were they ready!

Dollies whose Moms squealed over Elvis in the franlic fifties shreaked when he -bumped his hips. They screeched when he wiped his brow. And, oh, when he sighed…

The Moms still squealed….or cried. He was so beautiful; beautiful in his powder blue suit witli the sequined vest. And a little portly, too.

Cheating Heart was the oldest track at 19 years, making it a career overview of sorts.
