Elvis Presley’s Rise
Show Biz Phenomenon

What’s the magic formula that Elvis Presley has discovered? And who are his fans?
As far as the formula goes, few have figured it out. People just latch on to something that’s new, and Presley certainly is new and different.
But one thing about his audience–for the first time in the history of the recording industry, one record leads all possible fields–popular, hillbilly and rhythm – and – blues. That record is Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” and it has led the three categories not once, but for two straight weeks.
Presley will appear at the University of Dayton fieldhouse for two shows today at 2 p. m. and 8 p. m., rated the hottest show business attraction in the history of the music business. He now commands a fee of $10,000 an appearance.
With him Sunday will be several acts of vaudeville, including the Jordanaires of the Eddy Arnold TV show. Guest MC’s will be Al Morris of WAVI, for the 2 p. m. show, and Gene Barry of WING at night.
General admission tickets will go on sale an hour before each show.

Polly Thomas, a staff writer for the Journal Herald in Dayton, Ohio, who took her daughter, with Elvis above, to the show:

“He took them ecstatically through all conceivable contortions of voice and body. Beyond all precedence, he worked tirelessly, as though he were offering himself to some strange medium, understood only by those who feel beyond all feeling.

The obvious gyrations, to the unartistic eye (most of all, mine) may have appeared ribald. But in all fairness, I must admit that there is an explanatory background that lifts them into the field of art.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Miss., and spent his childhood days in the deep south. As a child he heard the plaintive chants and blues and saw potential shoe-shine boys ‘jig’ until they were exhausted. He captured the beat of the south and began to take part in amateur productions. Performing was as natural as breathing.

That primitive almost savage expression may be, in itself, a part of the hypnotic fascination. Then, too, the young southerner with straight, slicked-back hair and long sideburns, is dedicated to his audience. He sets his course and steers it straight, completely oblivious and uninhibited.

Toronto radio station CHUM went to a Top 40 format and published its first hit record chart 50 years ago today, in 1957. The No. 1 song was Elvis Presley’s All Shook Up. The 1,500th issue of the chart made its appearance on March 14, 1986, making it the oldest surviving radio station chart in North America. The chart was discontinued later in 1986 when CHUM dropped its Top 40 format.

“That’ll Be the Day” by Buddy Holly And The Crickets is released. The song would reach #1 in the UK and #3 in the US and was later ranked at #39 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In 2005, the recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.” It was also the first song to be recorded by The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became The Beatles.

In London, prior to his concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Bob Dylan welcomed the Beatles in his dressing room. Paul McCartney, who was eager to impress the singer, played him an electronic version of a song that would later become “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Dylan laughed and left the room after saying to Paul, “Oh, I get it, you don’t want to be cute anymore.”

There was a plaque that commemorated Elvis’s concert to raise funds for the memorial.

It was removed by the Federal government in 1987, citing Elvis as a poor role model – at the peak of the Elvis Aliver hysteria, which also had threatened the US Post Office issue the first Elvis Presley postal stamp, that same year.

Dozens of AC/DC fans needed treatment after complaining of burning eyes during a concert on the runway of Wels Airport, Wels, Austria. Around 150 fans had to be treated. Doctors found that the fans showed allergic reactions to bark mulch spread at the venue – the runway of Wels Airport, to avoid the soil getting too muddy after hours of massive rainfall.

A report was published saying how many musicians were frustrated with fans filming gigs on their smartphones. Jack White and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had both put up signs at their concerts asking people to leave their mobiles in their pockets.
