The Presley family moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, from May 15 until June 20, and then they all returned to Tupelo, homesick for family and friends.

1949-1953

Elvis delivered supplies to job sites for  Crown Electric for $1.00 an hour.

May 18, 1955

Elvis Scotty and Bill made their first appearance in Roanoke on May 18, 1955 while touring with Hank Snow. The billing include Faron Young, Martha Carson, the Wilburn Brothers, Slim Whitman, The Davis Sisters, Jimmie Rodgers Snow and Onie Wheeler  at the American Legion Auditorium , Roanoke, Virginia at 7.00 and 9.00 p.m.

May 18, 1957

Pittsburgh’s WJAS disc jockey Barry Kaye hosted a two-hour rock ‘n’ roll show at the Syria Mosque featuring the Moonglows, Otis Williams & the Charms, and the Clovers.

After hearing the news about Elvis’ stay in the hospital, Lamar Fike drove straight from Texas to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, where Elvis was staying.

“Along Came Jones” was the Coasters’ seventh chart single, all written by their producers, Leiber & Stoller.

Wilbert Harrison’s recording of Leiber and Stoller’s “Kansas City” rose to the top of the Billboard singles chart. Cover versions by Hank Ballard And The Midnighters, Rocky Olson, Rockin’ Ronald & The Rebels, and Little Richard all appeared in March of 1959, but the Harrison version was by far the most popular. Further success for Harrison would have to wait until 1970 when “Let’s Work Together” made it to number 32 in the US.

Lloyd Price charted with “Personality,” reaching #1 R&B for four weeks and #2 pop.

American DJ Alan Freed was indicted along with seven others for accepting $30,650 in payola from six record companies. Two years later, he was convicted and given a suspended sentence and a $300 fine.

Roy Orbison on tour in England at the Adelphi Cinema in Buckinghamshire, England, with The Beatles began their third tour of the year,  as opening act. Within days, thanks to their growing popularity, the Beatles became the tour’s headliners, and Orbison opened for them.

May 18, 1964

During a Rolling Stones tour, a riot broke out at the Chantingall Hotel in Hamilton, Scotland, when more than 4,000 fans with forged tickets crashed the gates at the band’s show.

In London, the Animals recorded “The House Of The Rising Sun” in one take. It is on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

It was announced that the Beatles had been selected to represent the UK on “One World,” the first global satellite broadcast, to air on June 25. The band was commissioned to write a song for the event. John Lennon’s “All You Need Is Love” was the composition that was chosen.

In Santa Clara, California, the Doors, the Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead performed at the Northern California Rock Festival.

Elvis and Priscilla flew to Hawaii for a vacation with Lisa Marie, Charlie Hodge, the Gambills and the Esposito’s.

Three hours after liftoff, Apollo 10 began transmitting the first color pictures of Earth from space.

Elvis and the group returned from Hawaii to Los Angeles.

The Tahoe Shows cancelled, Elvis was taken to a local hospital for some chest X rays and the fans were told that the weekend shows were canceled. Elvis and Linda flew home to Memphis.

1978

The Buddy Holly Story, a film starring Gary Busey, premiered in Holly’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas. The movie will be a critical and commercial success, although insiders said it had little historical accuracy.

1979

ABBA started a four week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Voulez-Vous’ the group’s fourth No.1 album.

Eric Clapton held a party at his Surrey house celebrating his recent marriage to Patti Boyd. Clapton had set-up a small stage in the garden and as the evening progressed, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr ended up jamming together along with Clapton, Ginger Baker and Mick Jagger. The all-star band ran through old Little Richard and Eddie Cochran songs.

1981

Diana Ross left the Motown label after 20 years and signed a $20 million contract with RCA.

1985

Sade reached #5 pop and R&B with “Smooth Operator.” The former model of Nigerian/English descent was a member of the eight-member funk band Pride before establishing her own group called Sade, which most people thought was the name of a solo artist (and many still do.)

1990

The television show “Good Rocking Tonight” aka “Elvis” was cancelled. The show began airing on ABC-TV on February 6, 1990 through May 19, 1990 with only 10 of the 13 filmed episodes were aired.

1994

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were married in a private ceremony at a judge’s home in the Dominican Republic. First word of the marriage would come two months later from the judge himself during an interview published in a Dominican newspaper.

1995

Actress Elizabeth Montgomery died of colorectal cancer, eight weeks after she was diagnosed, at the age of 62.(Bewitched, A Case of Rape, The Legend of Lizzie Borden, The Awakening Land, The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed?)  Montgomery had been married to actor Gig Young who co-starred in Kid Galahad with Elvis.

1996

The Elvis Presley song “Heartbreak Hotel/I Was The One” hit #42 in the U.K.

2001

Lisa Marie Presley helped open the new international headquarters of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights.

2003

June Carter Cash‘s funeral was held at the First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with an estimated 2,000 mourners including her husband Johnny Cash, who was in a wheelchair, Rosanne Cash, Carlene Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams, Jr., Marty Stuart, Tom T. Hall, Rodney Crowell, Trisha Yearwood, Connie Smith, Ricky Scaggs, Jane Seymour, and Robert  Duvall. Emmylou Harris, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Sheryl Crow performed gospel songs at the service.
