Known as Lady Day, Billie Holliday charted R&B (#5) with “Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)” It was her firsr and only R&B Hit but her last of thirty-nine pop hits that started in 1935.

The number one record on America’s R&B chart was a song called “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats – whe were actually Ike Turner And His Kings of Rhythm. “Rocket 88” is a first rock record contender, the the strings/horns are not guitars/drums.

Elvis Presley’s single “Heartbreak Hotel” hit #15 in the U.K.

Hank Snow’s All Star Jamboree” was booked to play, featuring country acts Faron Young, the Wilburn Brothers and Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter sisters.  Other artists appearing on the Jamboree were Jimmy Rodgers Snow (Hank’s son), Slim Whitman, The Davis sisters, Martha Carson and Elvis, Scotty and Bill who had only recently began touring with them.

Elvis flew to Minneapolis. He and the band didn’t stay at the same hotel.

Elvis had a date with Anne Neyland, who had a minor part in the Jailhouse Rock Film Co-star Judy Tyler was married, so the Publicity Showmance fell to Starlette Neyland

The Everly Brothers started a four-week run at No.1 in the US with ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream’.

Frank Sinatra’s Welcome Home Party For Elvis Presley is broadcast on ABC-TV.

For a fee of $125,000, Elvis sang “Stuck On You” and “Fame And Fortune” his now released current single – of which these performances were recorded prior to the single.

Elvis then did a duet with Sinatra, with Elvis singing “Witchcraft” and Sinatra “Love Me Tender”.

The show had an opening group song, then everyone had an act and then Elvis and Frank sang.

Ratings for the show were through the roof at 41.5 percent but Billboard magazine later said “Although Elvis became a Sargeant in the Army, as a singer, he never left the awkward squad.” The show marked Presley’s last TV appearance for eight years.

Elvis attended a kenpo karate demonstration at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he also met the instructor, Ed Parker.

Ray Charles & the Raelettes began their first British tour in London’s Finbury Astoria.

Bob Dylan walked out of rehearsals for the US TV Ed Sullivan show after being told he couldn’t perform his song Talking John Birch Paranoid Blues due to it mocking the US military and segregation. CBS officials asked Dylan to substitute it for another song, but the singer reportedly said: ‘No, this is what I want to do. If I can’t play my song, I’d rather not appear on the show’.

The Beach Boys started a four week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Beach Boys Concert’, the group’s first US No.1.

6th annual Grammy Awards are announced. Henry Mancini’s “The Days of Wine and Roses” is Record and Song of the Year. The Album of the Year is “The Barbra Streisand Album” and Best Rock and Roll Recording goes to Nino Tempo and April Stevens for “Deep Purple”.

Elvis went to Radio Recorders for the soundtrack sessions of Frankie and Johnny. He was there from 7.00 p.m. to 4.00 a.m. However, Elvis was not in the right mood to record so only instrumental tracks were cut.

American singer and TV presenter Perry Como died aged 88. He scored fourteen US No.1 singles, from 150 US chart hits and over 25 UK chart hits, including the single ‘Magic Moments’ and ‘Catch A Falling Star.’ Como was once the highest-paid performer in the history of television.
