Bill Haley and His Comets released “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock” as the B-side of the single “Thirteen Women (And Only One Man In Town).” “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock” didn’t become hugely successful on the music charts until the following year when it was re-released after the song appeared on the soundtrack during the opening credits of the hit movie, “Blackboard Jungle.”

Charley Pride jumped on the country charts with “You Win Again,” reaching #1. Pride, the most popular Black artist in country music history would go on to have an extraordinary sixty-seven hits between 1966 and 1989. Although his music was overwhelmingly country, he managed to cross to the pop charts eleven times, including his biggest hit, “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’ ” which reached #1 for five weeks country and #21 pop.

Eight months after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the documentary “Madonna: Truth or Dare” opened in North American theaters.

1994

Barbra Streisand began her first concert tour in almost 30 years.

2000

Michael Bolton lost his appeal of a court ruling that he stole part of his hit “Love Is a Wonderful Thing.” Bolton had asked for a retrial following a 1994 jury verdict that he plagiarized parts of the Isley Brothers’ song of the same title, but an appeals court panel upheld the ruling which had awarded the group $5.4 million from the profits of Bolton’s 1991 single.

2001

Deborah Walley died of esophageal cancer at 57. Known as Gidget in the 1960s, she also did The Mothers-In-Law, Benji, Beach Blanket Bingo, The Severed Arm, Spinout, Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, It’s a Bikini World, Sergeant Dead Head, The Young Lovers

Live from Las Vegas was released on CD. The compilation, mostly of cover songs, contained 15 live performances.
