The RCA Victor Atomic Powered Singer

May 4, 1956

Gene Vincent recorded the classic rock ‘n roll song ‘Be Bop-A-Lula’, at Owen Bradley’s studio in Nashville, Tennessee. The song went on to be a US & UK Top 20 hit in this year. Vincent has said that he wrote the words to the song after being inspired by a comic strip called “Little Lulu”.

Lonnie Donegan left Chris Barber’s Jazz Band to form his own skiffle group.

RCA released Elvis’ 7th single “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”, becoming Presley’s second No. 1 single on the country music charts, and peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Top 100 popular music singles chart, an earlier version of the Billboard Hot 100. Before the creation of the Billboard Hot 100 chart during 1958, there were a number of charts including Jukebox plays, Store charts, and Airplay charts. The song scored No. 1 on the Billboard Top Sellers in Stores chart

The Military Service Disruption

On CBS-TV’s “The Ed Sullivan Show,” the Chordettes sang “Lollipop,” David Seville performed “Witch Doctor,” and Ed Townsend sang “For Your Love.” Also that night, the comedy duo Wayne & Shuster made the first of their 67 appearances on the variety show series.

The Grand Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles was the site of the very first Grammy Awards, where statuettes were given out for Record of the Year and Song of the Year to Domenico Modugno for his rendition of “Volare” (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu). He beat out Peggy Lee’s “Fever”, “Catch a Falling Star” by Perry Como, “Witchcraft” from Frank Sinatra and “The Chipmunk Song” by David Seville.

Brook Benton landed a ninth straight week at #1 on the R&B chart with “It’s Just A Matter Of Time”.

Johnny Horton achieved one of the biggest chart jumps in rock history, when “The Battle Of New Orleans” rose from 93 to 36 on this date.

In Washington, DC, 13 civil rights activists – seven black, six white – called “Freedom Riders” in the press, began a bus trip that would take them through the segregated American South. The plan was to have at least one interracial pair sitting in adjoining seats and at least one black rider sitting up front where seats under segregation in the South had been reserved for white customers. During the Freedom Ride, many local and state police considered the activists’ actions as criminal and arrested them. In some localities, the police cooperated with Ku Klux Klan chapters and other whites opposing the actions and allowed mobs to attack the riders.

Led Zeppelin opened their 1973 North American tour, which was billed as the ‘biggest and most profitable rock & roll tour in the history of the United States’. The group would gross over $4 million from the dates, flying between gigs in ‘The Starship’ a Boeing 720 passenger jet, complete with bar, shower room, TV and video in a 30′ lounge and a white fur bedroom.

Elvis Presley began a 25-show engagement at the High Sierra Theater, Sahara Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada, The engagement at 17 performances as Elvis fell ill.

‘Night Fever’ by The Bee Gees was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. The group’s third No.1 and the theme from the film ‘Saturday Night Fever.’ The song was a US No.1 for over two months.

Grand Funk Railroad started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with their version of the Little Eva hit ‘The Loco-Motion.’ It was only the second time that a cover version had been a No.1 as well as the original.
