Their invention was meant to replace Thomas Edison’s phonograph and featured wax-coated cylinders which were considered an improvement over the phonograph’s tinfoil cylinders which had been delicate and difficult to remove.

Gene Vincent recorded the classic rock ‘n roll song ‘Be Bop-A-Lula’, at Owen Bradley’s studio in Nashville, Tennessee. The song went on to be a US & UK Top 20 hit in this year. Vincent has said that he wrote the words to the song after being inspired by a comic strip called “Little Lulu”.

RCA released Elvis’ 7th single “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”, becoming Presley’s second No. 1 single on the country music charts, and peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Top 100 popular music singles chart, an earlier version of the Billboard Hot 100. Before the creation of the Billboard Hot 100 chart during 1958, there were a number of charts including Jukebox plays, Store charts, and Airplay charts. The song scored No. 1 on the Billboard Top Sellers in Stores chart

The Grand Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles was the site of the very first Grammy Awards, where statuettes were given out for Record of the Year and Song of the Year to Domenico Modugno for his rendition of “Volare” (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu). He beat out Peggy Lee’s “Fever”, “Catch a Falling Star” by Perry Como, “Witchcraft” from Frank Sinatra and “The Chipmunk Song” by David Seville.

Brook Benton landed a ninth straight week at #1 on the R&B chart with “It’s Just A Matter Of Time”.

Johnny Horton recorded one of the biggest chart jumps in rock history, when “The Battle Of New Orleans” rose from 93-36 on this date.

The Beach Boys “Surfin U.S.A.” LP debuts on Billboard’s album chart, where it will enjoy a 78 week stay and top out at #2.

Wilson Pickett debuted on the chart with his first of 38 hits -“If You Need Me”.

Led Zeppelin opened their 1973 North American tour, which was billed as the ‘biggest and most profitable rock & roll tour in the history of the United States’. The group would gross over $4 million from the dates, flying between gigs in ‘The Starship’ a Boeing 720 passenger jet, complete with bar, shower room, TV and video in a 30′ lounge and a white fur bedroom.

Elvis Presley began a 25-show engagement at the High Sierra Theater, Sahara Tahoe, Stateline, Nevada, The engagement at 17 performances as Elvis fell ill.

Cher scored her first solo UK No.1 single with ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’ from the film ‘Mermaids’. The song had been a hit for Betty Everett on 1964, and gave Cher her first No.1 in the UK since 1965’s ‘I Got You Babe’.

At a concert to remember the Kent State University shootings in 1970, Peter, Paul & Mary performed “Blowin’ In The Wind”.

Alanis Morissette started a six-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with Jagged Little Pill. The record produced six successful singles, including ‘You Oughta Know’, ‘Ironic’, ‘You Learn’, ‘Hand in My Pocket’, and ‘Head over Feet’.

George Michael scored his seventh UK No.1 single as a solo artist when ‘Fastlove’ started a three-week run at the top of the chart. The second of six singles to be taken from George’s comeback album Older.

Metallica were demanding online music service Napster cut off 335,000 users who they claimed had been illegally trading their songs. The band had passed on the names of all those they considered to be “stealing” their material over the internet in the latest development in an ongoing battle over the protection of music copyrights on the web.
