“(Now And Then There’s) A Fool Such As I” hit #2 in the U.S. initially released as B-side to “I Need Your Love Tonight“, was an even bigger hit, reaching number one in the UK and number two in the United States (1959). It became a platinum record. The Elvis Presley version went to number sixteen on the R&B charts – the original by Hank Snow peaked at number four on the country charts early in 1953.

“I need your love tonight” the planned A side, reached #4 on the pop USA Chart.

Ben E. King, lead singer of the Drifters, was fired by his manager George Treadwell when he asked for a raise.

WLS-AM in Chicago switched formats from Country to Top 40. Mort Crowley was the first on-air voice at 6 a.m. The first record he played was “Alley-Oop” by the Hollywood Argyles. The new disc jockey lineup included your editor’s friends Dick Biondi and Bob Hale, plus Jim Dunbar, program director Sam Holman, Gene Taylor and Ed Grennan.

The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘From Me To You’, the group’s first No.1 and the first of eleven consecutive No.1’s.

May 2,  1964

The Rolling Stones self-titled debut album started a 12-week run at No.1 on the UK charts. The album spent a total of 51 weeks on the UK chart. Also on his day The Stones made their first appearance on the US singles chart when ‘Not Fade Away’ entered the chart at No.98. Also – The Stones made their second “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance.

Elvis’ 20th LP is “Kissin’ Cousins” soundtrack album hit #6 in the U.S and was certified Gold on March 27, 1992.

The 45 single sized Extended play discs with 4 songs were phased out.

The most bluesy song in the movie wasn’t on the soundtrack: “Pappy, Won’t You Please Come Home”, performed by Glenda Farrell, the Granny Character.

The Who gave a press preview of their new rock opera ‘Tommy’ at Ronnie Scott’s in London, England. The double album about a “deaf, dumb and blind boy” who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, was the first musical work to be billed overtly as a rock opera. In 1998 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for “historical, artistic and significant value” and has now sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Elvis Presley shot the final scene for his final movie, “Change of Habit.” Then spent the weekend in Palm Springs.

Elvis spent most of the next 3 weeks in his new Palm Springs home. During this time he watched 16 mm prints of several films, including Citizen Kane.

The Who‘s movie “Quadrophenia” premiered in London.

1991

B.B. King’s Memphis Blues Club (owned by the blues great) opened on Beale Street in Memphis, TN.

The video for the R.E.M. song ‘Losing My Religion’, was banned in Ireland because its religious imagery was seen as unfit for broadcast.

1992

Bonnie Raitt received an honorary Doctor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music during commencement cermonies in Boston.

1998

Loretta Lynn made the announcement backstage at the Grand Ole Opry that she intended to return to college and get a degree.

Japanese rock star Hideto Matsumoto was found hanged in the bathroom at his Tokyo apartment and died in hospital a short time later at the age of 33. His funeral, held on May 7th, was attended by over 70,000 people and required 100 police officers, 170 security guards, police boats and helicopters. 21 people were hospitalised for injuries caused by the massive crowd at his funeral.

The Elvis Presley movie “G.I. Blues” was released on DVD.

It was announced that the Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! was to close at the end of June 2013. The production, which was written by Jennifer Saunders, suffered poor ticket sales after damning reviews.
