The Platters made their TV debut on the Dorsey Brothers’ “Stage Show,” on CBS.

Buddy Knox, Ferlin Husky, Jimmy Bowen, Fred Astaire, and Abbe Lane with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra performed on CBS-TV’s “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

At the Capitol Tower Recording Studio in Hollywood, Wanda Jackson recorded “Let’s Have A Party.”

The Platters released the single “Twilight Time.”

The Capitol label officially stopped releasing 78 rpm records.

 

RCA released “Wear my ring around your neck/Doncha Think It’s Time”

It was particularly notable for breaking a string of ten consecutive number 1 hits for Presley achieved in just two years. It was Presley’s 6th number-one hit in the American R&B Charts, and peaked at number 2 on the American Pop Charts.

American country music singer Ricky Van Shelton covered the song for the soundtrack of the 1992 movie Honeymoon in Vegas.

Military service at Fort Hood, TX, for basic training as part of the Second Armored Division. He was stationed there for six months.

At Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut studio in Nashville, Marty Robbins (and the Glaser Brothers)  recorded “El Paso,” “Big Iron,” and ten more songs for his “Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs” album.

Blue Hawaii 

The Beatles played at the Casbah Coffee Club, Liverpool without George Harrison who was ill. This was the group’s last performance before leaving for their third extended engagement in Hamburg, West Germany.
Singer Bobby Rydell was cast in the role of Hugo Peabody for the film version of the Broadway musical “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Girls! Girls! Girls! production move to Hawaii: Elvis flew to Hawaii at 9.00 a.m. accompanied by his entourage.
The Colonel, who was already in Honolulu, had arranged a helicopter for Elvis to bring him from the airport to the hotel.
On his walk from the helicopter to the door of the Hawaiian Village Hotel, Elvis lost his yachting cap, his diamond ring and his jeweled tie, due to 8,000 screaming fans.

Elvis Presley fell on the set of his carnival movie, “Roustabout,” and had to have nine stitches in his right eye. He took one day off. I asked producer Hal Wailis how-come? and got a sensible answer: “We wrote a new sequence into the script, showing Elvis having an accident by crashing his motorbike through a picket fence. Yes, you’ll see him with a black eye in the picture. No, we haven’t shot that sequence yet we’ll shoot it after his eye gets better

1965

“Shindig!” on ABC-TV featured Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Glen Campbell, the Righteous Brothers, and Lesley Gore.

MGM released Elvis’s 17th movie, Girl Happy, nationwide. “Girl Happy” opens and is the 25th top-grossing film of the year. The soundtrack hits #8, while the non-movie single “Crying in the Chapel” hits #3

Working at Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles recorded overdubs on the new John Lennon song ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ and the new Paul McCartney song ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’ for the forthcoming Revolver album.

Tom Donahue at San Francisco’s KMPX-FM became the first disc jockey to play “deep cuts” from albums rather than singles, a “free-form” style that eventually transformed rock radio.

During a European tour, Alice Cooper accidentally hung himself in a rehearsal when a safety rope snapped; he dangled for several seconds before a roadie saved him.

George Michael was arrested at The Will Rogers Memorial Park for committing a sex act in a public toilet. He was arrested by undercover Beverly Hills police officer Marcelo Rodriguez. Michael later said; “I was followed into the restroom and this cop – well, I didn’t know he was a cop at the time obviously started playing this game. I think it’s called – I’ll show you mine, you show me yours, and then when you show me yours, I’m gonna nick you!” The singer was later fined $810 (£500) after being convicted of a “lewd act.”

“Captain EO,” a 3-D, 70mm, sci-fi fantasy, musical movie attraction starring Michael Jackson, closed after 10½ years at Disneyland.

UK Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of ‘Unchained Melody.’ Making Gates the seventh act to have a Top 40 hit with the song.
