It was particularly notable for breaking a string of ten consecutive number 1 hits for Presley achieved in just two years. It was Presley’s 6th number-one hit in the American R&B Charts, and peaked at number 2 on the American Pop Charts.
Military service at Fort Hood, TX, for basic training as part of the Second Armored Division. He was stationed there for six months.

At the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Farm Aid IV performers included Garth Brooks, Bill Monroe, Carl Perkins, Alan Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, Asleep at the Wheel, Arlo Guthrie, John Hiatt, and John Denver. Elton John sang “Candle in the Wind” for Ryan White, a boy with AIDS who died a day later.
“Captain EO,” a 3-D, 70mm, sci-fi fantasy, musical movie attraction starring Michael Jackson, closed after 10½ years at Disneyland.
UK Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of ‘Unchained Melody.’ Making Gates the seventh act to have a Top 40 hit with the song. Jennifer Lopez was at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Ain’t It Funny.’ And Celine Dion had the UK & US No.1 album ‘A New Day Has Come.’
