Elvis was supposed to report to United Artists in Hollywood for the start of production on Clambake. The Colonel realized it would be almost impossible to get Elvis away from his new ranch, so he had arranged for the cast insurance exam to take place at 5.30 p.m. at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville, where soundtrack recording was now scheduled to take place.
Elvis arrived in a rented Learjet and after discussing song selection for the film, recorded until 6.00 a.m. the next morning. It was obvious to all present that Elvis had little interest in the movie songs. Except for You Don’t Know Me, on which he expended 21 takes. However Elvis was still not satisfied with the result and would re-record the song later.

Led Zeppelin released ‘Rock And Roll / Four Sticks’ as a 7 inch single in the US, peaking at No.47 on the chart. The song was written as a spontaneous jam session, whilst the band were trying to finish ‘Four Sticks’. Drummer John Bonhamplayed the introduction to Little Richard’s ‘You Keep A-Knockin’ and Page added a guitar riff; with the tapes rolling the basic song was finished fifteen minutes later.

John Lennon released the Phil Spector-produced album “Rock ‘n’ Roll” after a much shabbier version of the material called “Roots” began to be marketed on late-night television. “Roots” was music executive Morris Levy’s version of the “oldies” sessions, which Lennon had been court-ordered to undertake as payment for appropriating a Chuck Berry lyric for the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Levy’s copyright was judged to have been infringed by the line “Here come old flat-top, he come groovin’ up slowly.” In 2004, Yoko Ono supervised the remixing of “Rock ‘n’ Roll” for reissue, including four bonus tracks from the Spector sessions.

The Wake and Aftermath

 1981
Dolly Parton topped the Billboard Pop Chart with her own composition, “9 to 5”. The record reached #47 in the UK.
Elvis Presley’s updated version of “Guitar Man” hit #43 in the U.K.
1982
Disc jockey Murray “The K” Kaufman died of cancer at the age of 60. Kaufman’s influence on Rock and Roll and its audience led the Beatles to seek him out when they first came to America in 1964. Kaufman’s friendship with the group gave him cause to start calling himself “The Fifth Beatle”, but that title was never bestowed upon him by any member of the group.
At the Beatles’ 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, George Harrison said that there were only two “fifth Beatles”: public relations manager Derek Taylor and road manager Neil Aspinall. In a 1997 BBC interview, Paul McCartney stated: “If anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian Epstein.”

Singer/songwriter/poet Leonard Cohen appeared in an episode of the ABC-TV series “Miami Vice.”

 1987
Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” reached #1 in England after being used in a commercial for Levi’s jeans. It was the third time the King classic had charted in Britain and the first time in almost twenty-six years. The #2 record at the time was Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” which not coincidentally was there due in great part to being in the same series of Levi’s commercials and after being featured in the film ‘Stand By Me.’
Singers Bobby Rydell and Fabian appeared on the NBC-TV sitcom “The Facts of Life.”
1990
Chuck Berry’s rock standard “Roll Over, Beethoven” was inducted into the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) hall of Fame at the thirty-second annual Grammy Awards. As if that wasn’t enough of an accolade for the icon, his Chuck Berry—The Chess Box—earned Best Historical Album honors for its producer, Andy McKaie, of Universal Music. Also, John Lee Hooker’s duet with Bonnie Raitt won Best Traditional Blues Recording.
Milli Vanilli are awarded the Best New Artist Grammy. It would take until the following November for producer Frank Farian to confess that the duo of Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus never actually sang a single note on their recordings, causing the award to be withdrawn.
 1992
The Four Tops and the Tempatations played at the Fox Theater in Detroit. What had started as a  one-off reunion for Motown’s twenty-fifth anniversary was so well received that the two groups began to tour together.
1996
The Garth Brooks album “Fresh Horses” was certified Triple-Platinum.
1998
Celine Dion went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘My Heart Will Go On’. The song was the theme from the movie Titanic. The world’s best selling single of 1998.
2001
Recovering from pneumonia, Johnny Cash was released from a Nashville hospital to attend the Grammy Awards where he picked up his statuette for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
2002
Elton John accused the music industry of exploiting young singers and dumping talented artists for manufactured group’s. He said ‘There are too many average and mediocre acts; it damages real talent getting airplay. It’s just fodder.’

2004 Recording Artist: Daughter Lisa Marie Presley

2007

Executives of the Dreamworks movie studio took out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety apologizing for any perceived similarities between their story, adapted from the stage musical “Dreamgirls,” and the book of the same name by Mary Wilson of the Supremes. The book offered a very unflattering look at the Motown label and the alleged behind-the-scenes manipulation of artists by its founder Berry Gordy, Jr. Gordy accepted the apology on behalf of the label, even though he no longer owned it.

2008

A US music aficionado sold his collection of more than three million vinyl albums, singles and compact discs to an eBay buyer from Ireland for just over $3 million. An eBay spokeswoman said the sale was one of the highest ever for the online auction site.

2011 Actor: Granddaughter Riley Keough

2012
Five members of the Russian feminist punk rock group Pussy Riot staged a performance on the soleas of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior where their actions were stopped by church security officials. By that evening, they had turned the performance into a music video entitled “Punk Prayer – Mother of God, Chase Putin Away!” The women said their protest was directed at the Orthodox Church leader’s support for Putin during his election campaign. The following month, three of the group members were arrested and charged with hooliganism and were were held in custody until their trial began in late July when the three members were convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”, and each was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
