Elvis performed at the Odessa Senior High School Field House, Odessa, Texas at 7.30 and 9.30 p.m.

The show attracted more than 4,000 people, including local singer Roy Orbison. Roy later commented: “his energy was incredible, his instinct was just amazing”. Soon it became obvious that any other act would have trouble following him.

February 16, 1957

BBC television’s first Rock ‘n’ Roll music program  The Six-Five Special, named for the time the show began, five minutes after six. The show was given air-time immediately after the abolition of what was called the Toddlers’ Truce, which had seen television stop between 6 and 7pm so children could be put to bed.

The live cross-country concert tour “Biggest Show of Stars for ’57” made a stop at the Olympia in Detroit for a show featuring Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Bill Doggett, Clyde McPhatter, theFive Keys, Ann Cole, the Moonglows, the Five Satins, and Charlie Brown.

Ray Charles hit the R&B charts with “Ain’t That Love,” an eventual #8 hit. It became his seventeenth Top 10 R&B hit in  a row. His next single, “Swanee River Rock” would fail to reach the R&BTop 10, peaking at #14, but became his first pop chart single in November, reaching #34.

Elvis Presley’s single “Playing For Keeps” hit #34 in the U.S. The song was the b-side of the song “Too Much.”

The Coasters charted on the way to 32 R&B and pop with the novelty classic, “Charlie Brown.” As big a hit it was, the million seller was the first of four singles in a row to not make #1. The chart toppers before it were “Yakety Yak,” “Youngblood,” and “Searchin’. ”

The Beatles made their second live appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, exactly one week after the first. Before an audience of 3,500 at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, The Beatles performed ‘She Loves You’, ‘This Boy’, ‘All My Loving’, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘From Me to You’, and ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’.

Elvis began 2 days of soundtrack recording at Radio Recorders for Spinout, starting at 3.00 p.m. and working till midnight. The core of the Nashville studio band had been flown in and was joined by “Tiny” Timbrell and guitarist Tommy Tedesco.

Elvis Presley‘s Gospel album, “How Great Thou Art” is awarded a Gold record. It would go on to win a Grammy Award for Best Sacred Performance and by 2010 was certified Triple-Platinum. The L.P. includes Presley’s 1965 #3 hit, “Crying in the Chapel”.

Led Zeppelin made their Australian live debut when they kicked off a six-date tour at the Subiaco Oval, Perth. Police battled with over 500 fans who rammed locked gates trying to get into the concert. Over 4,000 fans stood outside the venue without tickets and local residents jammed police phone lines to complain about the noise.
During his week-long stint as co-host of TV’s syndicated “Mike Douglas Show,” John Lennon sang “Memphis” and “Johnny B. Goode” with guest Chuck Berry, who Lennon referred to as “my hero.”

Jerry Lee Lewis surrendered to federal authorities to answer income tax evasion charges. He was later acquitted.

Bruce Springsteen went to No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Born In The USA’, his first UK No.1 album. The singers seventh studio album, was the best-selling album of 1985 in the United States (and also Springsteen’s most successful album ever). The album produced a record-tying string of seven Top 10 singles.

Singer k.d. lang was pictured on the cover of the first issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

The Simpsons were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Do The Bartman’. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Bryan Lorenand, The Simpsons became the first cartoon characters to make No.1 since the Archies hit ‘Sugar Sugar’ in 1969. Jackson was a massive fan of The Simpsons and had called the producers one night offering to write Bart a number one single and do a guest spot on the show.

Sex researcher/author  William Masters, of the research and writing team of Masters and (Virginia) Johnson, died of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 85. (Human Sexual Response, Human Sexual Inadequacy)

Elton John accepted undisclosed libel damages from the Britain’s Sunday Times after the newspaper erroneously repeated an entirely false rumor that he acted in a rude, self-important and arrogant manner at a charity ball.

Tony Sheridan, who used the early Beatles as his backing band during their days of playing clubs in Hamburg, Germany, died following a long illness at the age of 72.

Leslie Gore, who placed eleven songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1963 and 1967, including “It’s My Party”, “Judy’s Turn To Cry”, She’s A Fool” and “You Don’t Own Me”, died of cancer at the age of 68.
 American singer, songwriter, actress and activist, Lesley Gore, died of lung cancer aged 68. She is best known for the 1963 US No.1 & UK No.9 single ‘It’s My Party’ which was produced by Quincy Jones. Gore composed songs for the soundtrack of the 1980 film Fame, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for ‘Out Here on My Own’, written with her brother Michael.
