TV Debut! During the morning there were rehearsals for Stage Show at the Nola Studios. The show was broadcast from the CBS Studios at 8.00 p.m.

Because of the weather and because Elvis was unknown in New York City there were not much people attending the show.

Elvis Presley made the first of four appearances on the weekly TV program Stage Show, where he performed “Shake Rattle And Roll”, “Flip Flop and Fly” and “I Got A Woman”. Actor Jackie Gleason would say “He can’t last, I tell you flatly, he can’t last,” but after the initial show, Presley’s contract was extended to a total of six appearances.

Elvis gave his first real interview since he was stationed in Germany. He confessed to Memphis DJ Keith Sherriff that he was still homesick and couldn’t imagine himself doing anything at this point other than show business, “whether it’s singing or working as a stagehand. You know, once it gets in your blood, it’s hard to stay away from it.”
Either this week or the next the whole Elvis group left the severe environment of the Hotel Grunewald and moved to the Goethestrasse, nearby. Frau Pieper, the landlady, charged them the enormous rent of $800 a month. However she still maintained a room in the house. Partly to serve as a housekeeper, partly to keep an eye on her new guests. Elvis’ Grandma and Frau Pieper soon became fast friends, though they were often at odds, each in their own language.

Again there were some rumors about the selling of Elvis’ contract by the Colonel. Elvis telephoned the Colonel but was reassured by him: “not unless they want to pay us enough so we can retire and not have to work any more. If they want us under those conditions I strongly suggest our selling.”

Elvis On Tour was awarded as the Gloden Globes best feature documentary of 1972. Elvis however was ill almost from the start of the engagement. The press attributed his evident lack of energy and interest to the effects of illness, but some of the fans and the guys around him were worried about a deeper spiritual malaise:

The Wake and Aftermath

1980

How Did Elvis Die? – People

1982 Elvis Presley Enterprises/Graceland Tourism

1983

Radio station WDHA, 105.5 in New Jersey, claims to be the first US station to play music from a compact disc.

Billy Fury, the British rock-a-billy artist who scored a major hit in Great Britain in 1961 with “Halfway To Paradise”, died from heart and kidney problems at the age of 42. Fury was a major star in his homeland, but couldn’t catch the break he needed to become a part of the British Invasion.

The first Narara Music Festival was held near Somersby, NSW over the Australia Day weekend, the line-up included Men At Work, The Church, The Choirboys, Cold Chisel and INXS. The following year saw Simple Minds, Talking Heads, Def Leppard, Eurythmics and The Pretenders all appearing.

1984

Despite being banned by Radio 1 and the BBC for its suggestive lyrics, “Relax” by the British dance group Frankie Goes to Hollywood climbs to the top of the UK singles chart. The objectionable words were “Relax, don’t do it, when you want to sock it to it, Relax, don’t do it, when you want to come”. Many other UK commercial radio stations continued to play the record and it stayed at the top for five straight weeks and remained on the chart for a then record forty-two consecutive weeks. Later in the year, the ban would be lifted.

1985

Copying the “Do They Know It’s Christmas” Bob Geldof organized single with UK musical celebrities:

The sign on the wall said “Check Your Egos at the Door,” and with that realization from Quincy Jones, forty-five major stars entered A&M Studios in Hollywood to record the song Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie had written (in only two hours) called “We Are The World.” The recording was to act as a fundraiser for the USA For Africa fund. Among the icons at the mike were Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Steve Perry, and Willie Nelson. It took more than ten hours to do the single recording. Prince was invited but didn’t come.

The excluded Heavy Metal did “We’re Stars” and the also excluded Country Performers did “We’re One Big Family.”

Canada’s performers did “Tears are not Enough”

Awareness and money was raised for African Aid, which became Government bribes and weapons purchases.

1997

Pat Boone releases an album of Heavy Metal tunes called “In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy”, a tongue-in-cheek collection of tunes like “Smoke on the Water” and “Stairway to Heaven”. When the religious community failed to get the joke, he was dismissed from his Trinity Broadcasting Network program, Gospel America. He would later make an appearance on TBN with the president of the network, Paul Crouch, and his pastor, Jack Hayford, where he explained that the album was a “parody of himself.” Trinity Broadcasting then reinstated him and Gospel America was brought back
