George Klein and Elvis Presley went to the same high school.
Klein became a Memphis DJ and Elvis became The King.
Klein’s primary career was in radio and he only sometimes travelled as an inner circle member, part of the Memphis Mafia sorta depending. Above, he came to Canada with Elvis in 1957.
Elvis Presley was best man at George’s wedding and he in turn, introduced the most number of girlfriends to Elvis – from Anita Wood, Linda Thompson, The Alden Sisters, of which Ginger was selected and her stand-by replacement Alicia Kerwin.
Klein was one of the last of the circle to publish a book, although he did produce of the early 1980s Elvis documentaries:known for The Definitive Elvis: The Hollywood Years – Part I: 1956-1961 (2002), Elvis & June: A Love Story (2002) and Elvis 85 (1984). He also continues to attend Elvis events.
His book was better than the other Memphis Mafia guys in that he more actively placed Elvis in context of other artists – James Brown and others especially – often triggering Elvis picking up the medical bills for other celebrities. His book was less insightful to Graceland pressures of Elvis’ life because he was not around much.
His perspective on Elvis’ drug and sex life was fairly constrained until a near the end, almost obligatory description of Elvis being the conductor of an orgy. Always Elvis did it and we were just tag along people as if that’s not why they were there, eh.
In any event, Klein is not the first DJ to MC both Elvis and The Beatles, that’s Canada BC Vancouver’s Red Robinson.
