at the Forum in Wichita, KS, Chuck Berry performed on a bill with the Platters, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, the Clovers, Clyde McPhatter, and Bill Hailey & the Comets, among others.
Fats Domino performed “Blueberry Hill” on Ed Sullivan‘s CBS-TV show, which was still rising up the US charts on its way to #2.
Before the song became a rock and roll standard it had been recorded by various artists including Louis Armstrong, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Gene Autry and Jimmy Dorsey. The version by Fats Domino was ranked No.82 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Elvis’ cover version of “Blueberry Hill” would be a track on the LP that contained the soundtrack for “Loving You.” Elvis also performed the song in the 1970s – sometimes playing the piano as well. 
As a follow-up to his #3 hit, “Be-Bop Baby”; at Master Recorders in Hollywood, Ricky Nelson recorded “Stood Up” and “Waitin’ In School” with James Burton playing lead guitar on a Nelson session for the first time.  “Stood Up” reached #2 early the following year.

With their best hit making years now behind them, post Military Service – The Everly Brothers see their song “Don’t Ask Me To Be Friends” peak at #48 on the Hot 100. Although they had placed twenty-five songs in the Top 40 since 1957, the duo would accomplish that feat only two more times with “Gone Gone Gone” (#31 in 1964) and “Bowling Green” (#40 in 1967).

The US NBC news program “The Huntley-Brinkley Report” was the first to air footage (albeit pre-recorded) of The Beatles in concert – while in the UK The Beatles received silver LP discs for ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘With the Beatles’ at a ceremony held at EMI House in London. They also received a silver EP for ‘Twist and Shout’ and a silver single for ‘She Loves You’. The band then attend a cocktail party and a formal lunch in the EMI boardroom with company executives and invited guests.

The Supremes and The Righteous Brothers appeared on TV’s Rock ‘n’ Roll show, Shindig!

The Beatles press officer Brian Sommerville let it be known to an associate of Elvis Presley film producer Hal Wallis, that the members of the group were huge Elvis fans and would love to appear at the end of his next motion picture. The deal was never finalized.

The Vegas Artist in Residence and Tour Decade

Jerry Lee Lewis and wife / cousin Myra Brown are granted a divorce, ending their thirteen year marriage. The two wed on December 12, 1957, when Myra was just 13 years old, famously ending The Killer’s rock n roll career. 
Elvis flew back to Los Angeles where he arrived at 5.45 p.m.
Around this time in LA, Elvis met Paul Frees. Frees showed Elvis his BNDD badge (Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs). Elvis, very fixated on badges, decided he had to get this badge himself.
Memphis blues singer and musician Herman ‘Junior’ Parker died aged 39 during surgery for a brain tumor. Parker was discovered in 1952 by Ike Turner, who signed him to Modern Records. Parker then signed to Sun Records in 1953. There they produced three successful songs including ‘Feelin’ Good’ a No.5 on the Billboard R&B charts.
Elvis flew to Los Angeles, to remain in Palm Springs for the weekend.
Danny Whitten, of Neil Young’s backup band Crazy Horse, died of an alleged heroin overdose at the age of 29. The tragedy inspired Young to write “The Needle and the Damage Done”. Whitten is often remembered for writing “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”, recorded by both Rita Coolidge and Rod Stewart.

Elvis sent a telegram to the Colonel. He thanked him for arranging a special New Year’s Eve show at the new Silverdome stadium in Pontiac, Michigan. ” We’re looking forward to having the best show ever for this event.”

The Wake and Aftermath

1979
Paul McCartney releases “Wonderful Christmastime”, a tune on which he plays all the instruments himself. The song would peak at #6 on the UK singles chart and #83 on the Cash Box Best Sellers chart, but did not reach the Billboard Hot 100. Considered by many fans as one of his weakest efforts, the record reportedly earns Maca $400,000 a year, which puts its cumulative earnings at near $15 million.
Chuck Berry was released from Lompoc Prison Farm in California after serving four months for tax evasion. While he was away, his last studio album of new material, “Rock It”, was issued by Atco Records. As of 2016, this non-charting LP remains his most recent studio album, although he has released some ‘live’ recordings since.

Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship could not accomplish what the third incarnation of the band  Starship enjoy their first number one record with “We Built This City”.  Despite the song’s success, it has often been the target of music critics, including Blender Magazine, who named it their “worst song ever” in April, 2004. Their readers disagreed with the editors however, choosing “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus as their least favorite by a wide margin.

1987

In Los Angeles, U2 opened for themselves at a concert by pretending to be a country-rock group called the Dalton Brothers. The short-lived fictional, spoof band performed on three dates (November 1 in Indianapolis, November 18 in Los Angeles and December 12 in Hampton, Virginia) of their Joshua Tree tour. The band members appeared on stage wearing wigs, cowboy hats and boots, introducing themselves with “Dalton” pseudonyms. Bono introduced the band by saying, “We play two kinds of music: country and western.”

 

1990

The Righteous Brothers saw their popularity surge when the movie, Ghost, (starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore) featured their 1965 hit, “Unchained Melody”. Their original version and a re-recorded cut both made it into the US top 20, while three Greatest Hits albums made the Billboard chart.

1995

The James Bond film Goldeneye premiered with the Tina Turner theme song. The single reached its #10 peak in England in its first week of release, but it would only make it to #89 R&B and #102 pop in  America.

The Rolling Stones become the first act to broadcast a major concert on the Internet – Duran Duran would do the first digital concert in the online game “Second Life” in 2003

1997

Céline Dion released the album “Let’s Talk About Love,” which includes the song “My Heart Will Go On” from the movie “Titanic.” In her native Canada, it set a record for first-week sales: 230,000 copies, meaning one out of every 100 Canadians bought the album in the first seven days of its release.

ABC aired Britney Spears’ first TV concert, “Britney Spears: Live from Las Vegas.”

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices served a warrant at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch; At the time of the raid, Jackson and his family were in Las Vegas, where Jackson was filming a video.

2005

Vietnamese police conduct a search for 61-year-old Gary Glitter because of his alleged relationship with a teenage Vietnamese girl.

US Sen. Russ Feingold introduced legislation designed to close loopholes on payola-like practices by broadcast companies that force performers to play for reduced fees or for free.

The Johnny Cash-June Carter biopic “Walk the Line,” starring Jaoquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, and Ginnifer Goodwin, opened in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters.

2006

The British press panned Michael Jackson’s so called “comeback concert” in London, calling his first public performance since his child molestation trial last year “shambolic.” Jackson appeared to struggle to reach the high notes when he sang the chorus of “We Are The World” with a choir of children.

Former Motley Crue vocalist, Vince Neil, revealed that just hours after he had been recruited to perform at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. on January 20th, 2017, he was abruptly un-invited without explanation. Neil pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault on a female autograph seeker in July, 2016.
