The Shirelles (formerly known as the Poquellos), with writer Carole King playing drums, had their soon-to-be standard “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” released today.

Ray Charles’s “Georgia On My Mind” became his first pop E#1 and second million-seller. After hearing his chauffeur repeatedly sing the standard, Ray decided to record it.

“Billboard” reported that Elvis Presley’s “It’s Now or Never” was the fastest selling single in U.K. history. The song sold 780,000 copies in one week.

Jerry Butler moved back to the #1 spot on the R&B chart with “He Will Break Your Heart”.

The term “Nashville Sound” was used for the first time in an article in TIME magazine describing the new sub-genre of country music that was replacing honky tonk music on the record charts.

Cozy Cole began a 20-week goodwill tour of Africa that was sponsored by the United States State Department.

Elvis Presley’s single “Ain’t That Loving You Baby” hit #15 in the U.K.

“Baby Love” was #1 for a third week for the Supremes, temporarily holding off “Leader Of The Pack” from the Shangri-Las.  J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers dropped with “Last Kiss”.  Jay & the Americans marched to #4 with “Come A Little Bit Closer” and the Honeycombs were there at #5 with “Have I The Right?”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Dean Martin and “The Door Is Still Open to My Heart”, Manfred Mann’s former #1 “Do Wah Diddy Diddy”, Betty Everett & Jerry Butler were on their way down with “Let It Be Me”, the Zombies had a big hit with “She’s Not There”, which jumped from 22-9 and Bonanza’s Lorne Greene had a surprising hit at #10 with “Ringo”.

Pink Floyd were added to a 16-date UK tour with Jimi Hendrix, The Move, The Nice, Amen Corner, The Outer Limits and The Eire Apparent. It kicked off at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The headlining Hendrix was allotted exactly 40 minutes; The Move, who preceded him onstage, had just half an hour, and Pink Floyd, who appeared between after The Outer Limits, were allowed between 15 and 20 minutes per show.

‘Sugar Sugar’ by The Archies was at No.1 on the UK singles chart. The single became the longest running One Hit Wonder in the UK with eight week’s at the top of the charts. It was the first No.1 performed by cartoon characters.
Led Zeppelin began work on their third album, recording “Since I’ve Been Loving You” at Olympic Studios in London.

The Vegas Artist in Residence and Tour Decade

Santana‘s version of “Black Magic Woman” is released in the US, where it will rise to #4 during a three month chart run. The song was written by Peter Green and first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968.
The Osmonds released their first single–“One Bad Apple”.
Gladys Knight & the Pips released “If I Were Your Woman”.
The Jackson 5 remained at #1 on the R&B chart for the sixth consecutive week with their first release–“I’ll Be There”.
“We’ve Only Just Begun” by the Carpenters was the #1 Easy Listening song for the sixth straight week.
The Jackson 5 continued to have the #1 song for a fifth week with “I’ll Be There”.  The Carpenters were runners-up for a third week with “We’ve Only Just Begun” and James Taylor’s first hit “Fire And Rain” was third.  The Partridge Family moved from 7 to 4 with “I Think I Love You”, leaping over R. Dean Taylor’s “Indiana Wants Me”.  The rest of the Top 10:  Sugarloaf with “Green-Eyed Lady”, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles grabbed their fifth Top 10 in 37 releases with “The Tears Of A Clown”, 100 Proof Aged in Soul had #8 officially with “Somebody’s Been Sleeping” although few radio stations played it, Brian Hyland had his first Top 10 in eight years with “Gypsy Woman”, moving from 18-9 and Bread inched up with “It Don’t Matter To Me”.
Led Zeppelin III continued to set the bar on the Album chart with Abraxas by Santana #2 and James Taylor remaining in the third position with Sweet Baby James.  The only new entry into the Top 10 surged to get there–Sly & the Family Stone jumped from 48 to 10 in the second week of release for their Greatest Hits package.
Elvis performed at the Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, at 3.00 and 8.30 p.m. The attendance for these 2 show was record-breaking: 37,398 people. This was even more than the year before with the Rolling Stones.
The total profit was over $300,000.
During the 2nd show Elvis reminded his audience that he had “outsold” the Beatles, the Stones and Tom Jones: “all of them together”. This show Elvis worn the Fringe Suit.

The Wake and Aftermath


Wings release “Mull of Kintyre”, a tune about Paul McCartney’s Scottish home at the southwestern most tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in southwest Scotland. The bag pipe laced tune will become McCartney’s all time best selling single in the UK, either with or without The Beatles. Despite being the first song to sell over two million copies in Great Britain, it was mostly ignored in North America. Later in Macca’s career, the number became a concert highlight when he started using local pipe bands on stage to help him perform the song.


The Police arrived at #1 on the U.K. chart with “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”.


On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, four of the top ten songs were by Australian artists: Olivia Newton-John, the Little River Band, Air Supply, and Rick Springfield.

The Police had their fourth UK No.1 single with ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’, a No.3 hit in the US.

T’Pau started a five week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘China In Your Hand’. The song’s title according to singer Carol Decker is the effect you get if you hold a china cup to a light, you can see your hand through it.

Although they had been divorced for twelve years, Sonny and Cher appear together on The Late Show, where they are coaxed by David Letterman into singing “I Got You Babe”. The crowd gave the pair a standing ovation for what would prove to be their final performance together, as Sonny would die in a skiing accident in 1998.

George Michael went to No.1 on the UK album chart with his debut solo album ‘Faith’. The album won several awards including the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1989. To date, the album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Between 1987 and 1988, Faith produced six Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 hits, four of which (‘Faith’, ‘Father Figure’, ‘One More Try’, and ‘Monkey’) reached No.1, making him the only British male singer to have four No.1 singles from one LP on the Billboard Hot 100.

There were two new entries in the Top 10–former Go-Go Belinda Carlisle jumped from 11-5 with “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and Richard Marx was up to #10 with “Should’ve Known Better”.

The Soundtrack to “Dirty Dancing” took over as the #1 album.


Milli Vanilli producer Frank Farian admits to reporters that Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus never sang a note on the “Milli Vanilli” album. The duo eventually returned their Best New Artist Grammy.

The Who‘s Pete Townshend confesses his bisexuality to Newsweek magazine. Says Pete, “I know how it feels to be a woman because I am a woman. And I won’t be classified as just a man”.


In Berlin, Germany, more than a thousand fans of New Kids on the Block were given medical treatment after a minor riot during a Kids concert.


Bon Jovi went to No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Keep The Faith’ their fifth studio album and second UK No.1. The album produced six UK Top 20 hit singles, ‘Keep The Faith’, ‘Bed Of Roses’, ‘In These Arms’, ‘I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead’, ‘I Believe’ and ‘Dry County’.

Michael Bolton took the great Bee Gees song “To Love Somebody” to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart.

The Heights jumped into the #1 position with “How Do You Talk To An Angel”.  Boyz II Men had set an existing Rock Era record the week before with a 13th week at #1 for “End Of The Road”.  PM Dawn was at #3 with “I’d Die Without You” and Shai moved from 12 to 4 with “If I Ever Fall in Love”.


Michael Jackson married a pregnant Debbie Rowe in Sydney Australia. The pair had met in Dr. Arnold Klein’s dermatology office where Jackson was being treated for vitiligo. Three months later, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., often called Prince Michael, was born.


Robbie Williams went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘She’s The One / It’s Only Us’, his second UK No.1. ‘She’s The One’ was written by World Party leader Karl Wallinger. Williams scored six other chart toppers as a member of Take That.


The trial of Michael Abram began. He had attacked George Harrison and his wife in their home in Britain on December 30, 1999.

Marilyn Manson’s released “Holy Wood (In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death).” The cover of the album was banned by several retail chains due to the cover art. The banning chains released an alternate cover. The cover depicts Manson on a crucifix.

U2 went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Vertigo’, the bands fifth UK No.1, taken from ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’.

The Rolling Stones were refused permission to pursue a claim against their former record company Decca for unpaid royalties through the courts. A High Court judge in London said the dispute would go to arbitration and not be decided in court. The dispute was over their Forty Licks compilation CD, which was released in 2002 and was the first collection to span their entire career.

A Los Angeles jury ordered Rod Stewart to repay the $780,000 he accepted as a deposit for a 2002 tour of Latin America that was later canceled.

Paul McCartney, Bono of U2, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Snow Patrol, the Darkness and Keane recorded a new version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

U2 reached the top of the U.K. chart with “Vertigo”.

Usher won American Music Awards for Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Album (Confessions).


Led Zeppelin were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame by Roger Taylor of Queen. Jimmy Page personally accepted the award in front of a 3,000 strong audience during the 3rd annual induction ceremony which was held at the famed Alexandra Palace in London.

Janet Arvizo, the mother of the boy who accused Michael Jackson of child abuse, pleaded no contest to welfare fraud. The 38 year old Los Angeles resident was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service and repay more than $8,600.

Paul McCartney posted a letter on his website calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to release 30 Greenpeace activists whom Russian authorities arrested during a protest over Arctic oil drilling in September. All the activists involved had their charges dropped in late December of this year.
A pair of white boots worn by Elvis Presley during his famous ’68 Comeback TV Special performance were bought by a UK collector for £29,500, ($44,500). Elvis had worn the size-11 Verde boots while singing ‘If I Can Dream’, two months after the assassination of Martin Luther King, the lyrics included quotes from the civil rights leader.
